PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Remote play basically comes free with the hardware, the main thing devs really have to do is provide alternate control schemes. It will be tested as part of the cert process. And it's another great move from Sony, love my Vita.

Another thing is that Remote Play is a feature of Sony laptops and phones and tablets now, and assuming they carry that onto the PS4 it's a great bullet-point for people choosing their new phone or whatever. You can reorganise your Resi briefcase in a meeting.

Has a lot of the best of the PSP library available for good prices and looks and plays better than ever on that hardware

I love my vita but the psp selection is dire.

Remote play is a good way to both distinguish their platform against Xbone, and to compete with the Wii U. All of that, whilst cross promoting the Vita itself. It's a smart move and as I've recently leant I'm going to become a Dad this year, I can imagine it's a feature I'll be making regular use of throughout the generation. :D

I though the remote play was proper remote play as in streaming to where ever you are in the world more like onlive

I was under this impression too.

If you really want/need the L2/R2 buttons, you can sync a PS3/probably PS4 pad with your Vita and play it like that too.

How do you sync a PS3 controller to the Vita? Never knew this was possible.

Why did you decide to partner with Sony rather than Microsoft?

Microsoft is a good partner of ours for a long time. Currently, Sony is more open and more actively looking for new game concepts, new business models and new titles than Microsoft. But things can change in the future – we potentially can go to any platform if the platform owner is not setting borders between our players. Currently, Sony’s PS4 is the most open platform, open to allow us to find a way that War Thunder players can get their game on cross-platform which is really cool and something the industry has lacked for years. Sony’s guys really want to help us to make great game for our players and that means a lot when you are making a game for any console.

Will there be interconnectivity between the PS4 and PC version?

For sure! We'd would have never started the development if Sony prohibited this interconnectivity. Sony is all for it.

From an interview with the War Thunder developer.

I was disappointed when not much seemed to happen after the Portal 2 cross play, so glad to see Sony are still all for it. Hopefully this time around more developers will take advantage of it, can certainly see more F2P/MMOs getting a PS4 version.

Surely Planetside 2 must be coming along at some point with cross play.

But I thought off tv play was a gimmick that no one wanted???

To add.. I do approve and applaud this direction.

I must admit, prior to getting a Wii U I was one of the naysayers that couldn't really see the point in this feature, but being able flit between the telly and the gamepad has proved incredibly useful. Can see myself getting a lot of use of the Vita/PS4 link (assuming it works nicely).

I keep seeing articles mention that the PS Eye will be bundled with the PS4, has this been confirmed yet?

Rumoured, but it's pretty much a guarantee as far as I'm concerned.

"A trusted PlayStation 4 developer source with a proven track record for accuracy has told Digital Foundry that Sony has mandated Vita Remote Play for all upcoming PS4 games - except those that require the use of its bundled stereoscopic camera, the PS4 Eye."

They'll probably have a go - though it'll need a total interface rework. The game itself would work though.

Problem is it'd be open season on pad players with PC players on mouse/keyboard. Of course, it might have Move support - apparently MAG's FPS controls were pretty good using Move.

Firstly, congrats! Secondly, since recently becoming a father also, the Vita gets 75% of my gaming time. It really is a brilliant piece of kit. Can't wait til I can remote play PS4 games. It'll mean no longer neglecting the console under the TV

I've got a pre-order in for this, which if I keep it till the day will actually be the first time I've bought a console on launch day. Whether I hang on to the pre-order depends entirely on what games will actually be announced to come with it, though. I always end up getting games that I wouldn't normally bother with when it's early in a console's lifetime and there's not a whole load of choice yet, I'd like to avoid that this time, though my 80GB phat is slowly dying.

The Vita play doesn't excite me, though I appreciate that it is a brilliant idea for a lot of people now. I don't use the feature on my Wii U that much; if I fancy playing Mario I'll play one of the other games on my 3DS instead. That said it does make the prospect of buying a Vita more exciting, but again there's not a whole lot of games I really want!

Just been playing ICO HD on PS3 using vita remote play for the first time (my all time fave PS2 game, thanks for the free trip down memory lane PS+). Via my BT homehub I had no lag problems at all, and the controls work very well, I don't even mind using the top of the rear touch pad for R2 etc.

Has got me totally fired up for mandatory remote play on the PS4, which I expect will be even bettererer, and will free up even more gaming time without dominating the TV and upsetting the missus.

God damn, I am far too excited about the next gen.

Old?

Cerny says no always online requirement:

PlayStation 4 is not a permanent connection system in that sense, but the experience is much richer if you are connected. You will have access to digital content and the updates for your games, along with a wide range of social functions: upload videos and screenshots, see your friends play and interact with them in various ways within the games.

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=572893

And Yosp says you never have to take the PS4 online if you don't want to:

Did we consider it? No, we didn't consider it. The main reason being that many countries don't have robust Internet connections. It makes sense for people to have Internet connections to play online games, but for offline games there are many countries that we saw do not really have robust internet.

Eurogamer: Does the console always need to be connected to the internet?

Shuhei Yoshida: You can play offline, but you may want to keep it connected. The system has the low-power mode - I don't know the official term - that the main system is shut down but the subsystem is awake. Downloading or updating or you can wake it up using either the tablet, smartphone or PS Vita.

Eurogamer: Are all of those things optional? For people who have broadband data limits, for example? They can customise everything?

Shuhei Yoshida: Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally. Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social! So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that.

Sorry if old, hard to keep up at the moment.

I went looking for this the other day and realised I was wrong, it's the PSP you could do this with. No reason why they couldn't include it as an option for remote play with the PS4 though, makes perfect sense.

So Sony have effectively announced a console with almost all the benefits of the Bone and none of the downsides.

Nailed. It.

Honestly, they'll have the living room under control for 20 years if they deliver a machine with these features and good online app support. Fucking badass work.
