PlayStation 4 Console Thread

For PS2 and PS3 I buckled and got a launch USA unit. I was determined not to do the same again as the PS3 region stuff has been a bit inconvenient (mostly just the inability to watch all Euro Blurays). This is a first though, a console I want released the same year as the rest of planet Earth.

Who remembers this lol

I'm not making this up. Promise. The guy I sit next to at work just told me his best friend's brother works for Microsoft in some capacity. The best friend works for a large tech provider (Insight, I think). They went out boating on the weekend and the best friend supposedly told him the following:

"Microsoft are shitting themselves"

They are deeply worried at the direction Sony have taken winning over developers

They are concerned at the disparity in specs

There is a lot of internal confusion due to withholding of info from higher up and mixed-messaging

They are very worried about declining game market and relative failure of windows phone, windows 8 and Surface

They are quite confident about their content deals in the US (for media and exclusives) but they haven't really thought outside of the US for media deals yet.

He's probably making it up, though he's a stand-up generally pro Microsoft guy (he runs his own company doing Microsoft-based infrastructure stuff!) and not very interested in games consoles or the industry, so I was a bit taken aback that he actually knew there was a new Xbox. Thing is, I know guys who work at Microsoft too, and they know absolutely nothing (or they're pretending that's the case) so this infodump seems a bit suspicious. But the guy has no reason to bullshit and no track record of doing so. Make of it what you will.

Seems like it might have been legit? Or maybe I'm stretching. But the mixed message stuff seems to tie in with nobody knowing the correct stance on various issues,

The only thing I see wrong with Moz's mates prediction is that instead of 'Microsoft are shitting themselves' it should be 'People within Microsoft previously responsible for Xbox becoming a prominent and respected gaming platform, are shitting themselves.'

Seems to me that there's been a corporate decision that Xbox as a gaming platform, and gaming in general, is a dead duck and that meaningful revenue lies elsewhere.

The article JP posted earlier was bang on. They're like Japanese soldiers stuck in the past fighting a war that's long over.

Hurrah, we won the living room! Only to realise there's no one actually in the living room, and those that are can just as easily get all their content from their phones and iPads which aren't restricted to living rooms anyway.

Actually while watching the MS clusterfuck this week Morrius's post came to mind, particularly the whiff of fear and desperation that seemed to sit beneath the snotslick demos and showmanship from Redmond, and the complete gaping absence of any games. Good call.

If sony did admit to having the same 2nd hand games policy (and regular net connection), would this sway the minds of people here?

The PS4 requiring a 'net connection seems highly unlikely as Michael Denny, VP of Worldwide Studios, stated in an interview that, "Everything is now more connected - although I do keep stressing that PlayStation 4 can be played without an internet connection." I suppose there's always the possibility he 'misspoke', but we also have Shuhei Yoshida, president of WWS, saying that always-on was never considered.

Sony's left a lot more wiggle room when it comes to some form of pre-owned counter, so personally I expect them to have something. Reading between the lines I would expect it to be less comprehensive than what Microsoft appear to be preparing, perhaps something akin to the current online pass craze but less cumbersome. Or maybe they don't have any system-level restrictions but are still negotiating things with publishers; if the PS4 doesn't require an internet connection then that rather limits a game's ability to check up on you.

Not to get all A Beautiful Mind on you, but it's interesting that CD Projekt have declined to confirm an Xbox One release for The Witcher 3. They were quick to announce their intentions on PS4 after it was officially announced, so given the developer's well documented distaste for DRM one does wonder... still, there are numerous other reasons why they might be keeping things to themselves for now.

Hopefully we'll get definitive answers from E3.

It would convert me from PS4 day 1 to.... "Let's work out exactly how much I'd ACTUALLY miss if I just used my PC".

God, I hope Sony don't fuck this up. I've had years of face-palms and fuck-ups, but pretty much since the PSN hack they've been on point and getting things right. The constant kickings - many of them deserved, some not so much - have really made them get their game on properly. Microsoft had better get their shit together as well, without their pushing we would never have the Sony we're seeing now.

There's rumours of a sequel/reboot of Heavenly Sword as well. After DMC Ninja, Theory seem have their shit together so I'd love to see them have another crack at this much-maligned game I loved.

Is there any reason to expect ps3 compatible accessories will not work on the ps4 - specifically my Fanatec wheel setup?

For me its been 360 over ps3 but i prefer GT to Forza so I'm pretty much #teamsony and thinking of a preorder!

The only bit they have clarified so far has been move controllers which will work, and ps3 controllers which won't. They will probably get into other stuff at e3

Let's hope Sony keep away from DRM stuff, always online and that they have committed to bring backwards compatibility through Gaikai, because they've done everything else right so far.

Well, 2 out of 3 things right.

considering Sony showed playable demos in Feb, I would think its fair to say the rumors of XBONE being 6 month behind are true.

Hence the fear, delayed reveal from April and lack of actual games at the Event.

Through the grapevine: Sony's unveiling event was delayed from December 2012 as, well, it's December. Who the hell announces new stuff in December (marketing probably didn't think that one through)? But it seems to indicate that they were ready even earlier.

Proof will come later on. But I'm getting the sneaking suspicion the Xbone got 8GB not only to be equal but also to give devs some leeway into porting stuff over from PS4 more easily (though I have no technical basis for saying so, just comparing literal numbers here). If they really are behind, MS might have thrown money at the problem in order to get a few more games at launch ported over from their competitor.

Why do I want this at launch even though no launch games really massively interest me? What will it be, Knack, Killzone, Watchdogs, Drivethingy and AC4? And obvious FIFA etc?
