PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I wonder when Microsoft will start to realise the depth of their failure in providing BC on Xbone. There's just no reason to stay loyal to the Xbox platform, particularly if Live remains the only of the online services where you must pay for the most basic level of service.

its fucking nuts when you consider Apple's (very successful )strategy is to lock consumers into their platform by way of their purchased content.

And Apple is the company that MS mostly has in its sites.

And its' Doubly fucking nuts when you think - that having all your digital games content available on day one - was the only version of this MS had.

We don't know if PS+ will be applied to the PS4 in its current guise. I'd certainly hope so, but I can imagine it'll only be available a year in or so.

I think there will be something there day one for PS4. Not an instant game collection, obviously, but maybe one or two PSN games and discounts on some retail games. It'd be crazy to offer nothing and not maintain the momentum and goodwill they're starting to build with it.

This is the bit I really don't get about Sony and MS both dropping BC seemingly without too much hand-wringing: it provides me as a customer with a perfect opportunity to switch platforms without loss. If I knew all my games and what-not would transfer with me, I'd be a lot less likely to change from Sony to MS or vice-versa. It's really odd.

I expect to see a reveal of the PS4's media capabilities at E3, and someone cracking a joke about it not needing an extra box for big laughs.

PS3 did all the usual streaming apps, right?

Yep, plus with a cheap USB add-on it was a pretty tolerable PVR. If Sony play their cards right they can show off a machine that lets you do all that live TV stuff, all your streaming TV stuff, and lets you record TV as well.

They have probably I think twice as many streaming apps in the US than they do over here because they have stuff like Amazon video and Hulu as well. The one big plus that it had as well was being Divx certified.

I do wonder since Divx has been updated since the PS3 launched, will the ps4 actually be able to play MKV files.

Somebody pointed out before though that a lot of the 360 media apps are better because they are basically the Windows 8 versions, whereas most of the catch-up services on PS3 are done by horrendous web apps. Even iPlayer, which is a native app, is still pretty crusty.

i think its pretty safe to assume MS aren't going to let you play mkv's.

all this TV stuff sounds like they are trying to get into bed with all the major cable players in the states. Apple have been wrangling back and forth with them for years - to try and bring them to the apple TV.

MS obviously want to get there first, and this smells like preparation for a time when MS become the online portal for cable industry.

i personally hope that never happens.

The PS3 Netflix is ludicrously better than the Xbox one too.

Hopefully the PS4 will be able to do MKV, or universal media server at the least (it's like PS3 media server but better!)

Why do people say this all the time? I use 360 Netflix UK for preference (Apple TV for Netflix US), largely because my 360 is quieter than my PS3. What have I missed?

I was actually thinking of whether or not Sony would but they introduced Cinavia protection anyway so there really isn't a reason why they wouldn't. It will be interesting to see if MS relax their thing on 1080p video, iirc you could only watch stuff in 1080p if you got it from them directly.
