PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Problem is though it never actually says that anywhere in the article.

Seems you are right, the develop writer has chosen to interpret the source CVG article, it originally just states they will try not to delay Europe, and might favour it if supply is tight, which maybe why develop thought it meant a 2013 Euro launch:

With Sony expecting Microsoft to tackle Europe more aggressively, CVG has heard from a company insider that PlayStation is "prepared to do whatever it takes" to ensure there is no PS4 delay across Europe.

It remains unclear whether there will be a PS4 supply shortage that would affect its output across any of the main three markets, but CVG understands that, if the launch stock is tight, the US and Europe will be the priority over the perceivably "safe" region of Japan.

A Sony spokesperson has declined to comment.

They've never officially said where it is being launched, just somewhere will get it "Holiday 2013", but Edge claimed Europe got the shaft, which is 100% believable as that is precisely what has happened historically.

But wasn't it always meant to launch this year in Europe?

No. The launch announcement said '2013' without stating territories; when quizzed by a journo afterwards, the Sony company line was 'we promise nothing about Europe.'

they would be much better off having low stock throughout a world wide launch - than delaying any one territory. it proved to be a PR nightmare last time.

it also has the added benefit of news stories centred around people selling their kidneys to try and secure one for christmas.

Another PS4 game confirmed, seems Mark Rein wasn't bullshitting when he said Sony/Microsoft were pushing F2P and IAPs for their next consoles:

Totally. Just imagine the unbridled sexiness of having one under your telly on launch day, and thinking;

"So many people want it, but it's mine"

Shocking news: it's a black box.

Whodathunkit. I know reactionary facetiousness is the order of the day here, but I do think some people are actually interested in the specifics of the design, several of which are clearly visible.

The last couple of E3s have been a bit damp. Love all the excitement for this year. Was a good plan by Sony to hold back showing the console; still leaves them with a big reveal. So, it looks like it stands upright in that teaser?

You hear all the time that it doesn't matter about the aesthetics of the box, but it's a product that should be desirable. You should see it and say "I want one."

The PS3 is set to benefit from PS4 development as the "play while downloading" feature makes its way onto Sony's current console with the release of upcoming survival title The Last of Us.

It's one of the PS4 features TechRadar is most excited about, promising gamers the ability to get into the action without the annoying thumb twiddling.

Gamers will only have to download 50 per cent of the game when it hits the PSN store on June 14 before they can get started on what we're expecting to be one of the big hitters of 2013.

No time for downloading - the infected are coming

While it's good news for those who have been drooling over every last morsel of footage since the game's 2001 reveal, we're actually expecting the PS4 to let us play games when even less than 50 per cent has been downloaded to the console - "just a fraction" said Sony.

Still, halfway is good enough for now, and while we might still be waiting to find out what the PS4 actually looks like, we'll be just that extra bit ready for it now when it arrives.

The other question right now is: will the new Xbox also announce ‘play while downloading’ functionality to games during the big reveal tomorrow?

Not fussed for Last of Us because I’m getting it on disc but it will be good for the PS4 for sure, especially considering the file sizes on some stuff even now like Hitman Absolution being 15gb

Yeah i think no glassy plastic is worth celebrating.

Every flash in that teaser looks like a close up on a ship from Wipeout. The future is here!

The stuff at the end is the pad and the Eye though, just to note.

I'm not making this up. Promise. The guy I sit next to at work just told me his best friend's brother works for Microsoft in some capacity. The best friend works for a large tech provider (Insight, I think). They went out boating on the weekend and the best friend supposedly told him the following:

"Microsoft are shitting themselves"

They are deeply worried at the direction Sony have taken winning over developers

They are concerned at the disparity in specs

There is a lot of internal confusion due to withholding of info from higher up and mixed-messaging

They are very worried about declining game market and relative failure of windows phone, windows 8 and Surface

They are quite confident about their content deals in the US (for media and exclusives) but they haven't really thought outside of the US for media deals yet.

He's probably making it up, though he's a stand-up generally pro Microsoft guy (he runs his own company doing Microsoft-based infrastructure stuff!) and not very interested in games consoles or the industry, so I was a bit taken aback that he actually knew there was a new Xbox. Thing is, I know guys who work at Microsoft too, and they know absolutely nothing (or they're pretending that's the case) so this infodump seems a bit suspicious. But the guy has no reason to bullshit and no track record of doing so. Make of it what you will.
