PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Dissatisfied by your current remote control's months-long battery life, eh?

I've had my PS3 Bluetooth remote going on 5 years and it's had new batteries twice. I can live with that.

I want my remote to be a sleek, expensive touch-screen device that's constantly updated to add extra features and custom UIs for whatever I'm using it for. I want my smartphone to do it, basically. That'll be over WiFi or Bluetooth.

Sony have already talked about their SmartGlass-like PlayStation App. I'd be surprised if you can't use Android/iOS devices as a remote for media functions, maybe even away from home.

Sony are constantly talking about their next-gen Xbox(360) learned lessons - lets wait for the full burrito though eh? #keepthefaith

You can already connect certain Sony devices, like Xperia phones, to a PS3 for Remote Play functions. It's not very outlandish to think they'll have better integration next time around.

Have you ever had a touch screen remote? I have, several times. It sucks. It's invariably blinding bright when you use it in a darkened room whilst being too dim and hard to read in direct sunlight. But worse than that, you can't use it by feel; quick operations like pausing playback or changing the volume become surprisingly laborious as you have to look down at the remote to carry them out. I have a mostly-buttons Harmony One now and that's the best remote I've ever owned.

Don't agree with any of that doc.

I use my phone/pad to control a mac mini Plex everyday and its perfect. I also use it to control an Apple TV and have the same experience. Won't work well for games but for general control it's great.

Agree. The only things i can't control with my iPad are the tv, because its one gen out from being able to use the viera app, and the ps3, although we do have the Bluetooth remote.

IR is downright archaic now, almost as bad as Panasonic VCR's with the cable remote.

Is this their Thames Barge moment? The very week Microsoft start their offence and present what they have. Of course, we knew this would happen (if it's true) but I guess the end of May is when it all kicks off :omg:

Not all that surprising. Sony are Champions League sponsors, the final is the biggest date on the calendar worldwide and the sort of person watching is the sort of person they're targeting with this machine.

Probably nothing to do with Microsoft, for once - there'll be tens of millions sighing in relief that Adrian Chiles has been cut off.

I wonder if they're forcing Microsoft to possibly rush some decisions for the NextBox which could be poorly implemented?

I get the feeling Microsoft's unveiling date (21st May) for the Nextbox being so close to E3 it can't possibly give Sony enough time to change the console box in retaliation. LIKE CHESS.

Cerny/Sony go balls-out on tech specs in this Gamasutra feature.

They must be pretty confident they're going to outpower the Xbox? Or they don't care.

I prefer this approach to giving all your chips dodgy names and refusing to put the specs out.

Nope, It's MS who actually don't care

I'd say Sony are being open for the benefit of developers, not the detriment of Microsoft. It's too late for either manufacturer to really alter their hardware anyway.

As a layman it certainly sounds like a conscientious, elegant system. Pretty much the polar opposite of the PS3, really.

Fascinating article - the bits I understood. As well as being impressed with the numbers being bandied about, there's a real sense that they have bent over backwards to solve every possible problem and bottleneck that developers might come up against when developing on the hardware. I know it's a PR soundbite as much as anything, but when you hear them talk about planning in 2009 for hardware/middleware/software exploits that wouldn't likely be in commonplace use for 5 or 10 years, well they really are making all the right noises.

#TeamCerny (well, on second thoughts...)

Nah all that stuff will have been locked down a long time ago, I expect.
