PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I've never even considered controller lag to be an issue that needed addressing (it's basically imperceptible as far as I'm concerned). The lack of analogue buttons sounds more like a cost-cutting measure, which is a shame. Since we're losing BC anyway (apparently?), I guess it doesn't matter that much.

I'm actually glad it's going. The only game I've noticed it on is Wipeout HD on PS3, where I kept losing races at first because I wasn't pressing the button hard enough!! I promptly changed to a trigger and silently hoped that the feature would be dropped from future hardware.

Huh. I had no idea the PS3 controllers had analogue buttons until I read that. I remember Sony adding them to one of the PlayStation pads, although I can't remember which one, but I thought the feature had been dropped. I suppose that's not a feature I care about then...!

Everyone uses Visual Studio for everything, because it's awesome. If I could use VS 2010 to program my oven I would.

I use a fair bit of Notepad+. Gives me something to do while VS 2010 builds forever, hangs, crashes, updates intellisense, etc

Actually, the best thing about VS 2010 compared to other VS is that you can switch most of the bloated shit off so it's pretty much just Notepad+ you can just F5.

You can turn the sensitivity right down so you only have to press the button gently for full effect. It's in the game's control options. :)

Sony are just one of many partners in the Blu-Ray Association whereas Microsoft control Direct X.

DirectX is a commercial competitive advantage for Microsoft and their OS business, if they were interested in interoperability, they would have helped shape OGL or licensed out DirectX by now, and Apple Macs/Linux might actually have been a practical gaming platform, but they ain't that dumb.

But we are talking about consoles anyway, with their bespoke hardware and everything tweaked to the tits, interoperability provided by OGL/DirectX is much less valuable in those situations.

As a Vita early adopter, this bit from GDC is pure amaze;

The ability to stream gameplay from PlayStation 4 to PS Vita was touched upon during the presentation, Norden confirming that the process of beaming gameplay from console to handheld is based in part on Gaikai streaming technologies, and that you'll be able to do this on a home network or over the internet.

"Latency is going to depend on your internet connection or speed but over your home network it should be extremely fast," he said.

The whole process is considerably more refined than it was on PS3. For starters, it's all hardware-driven, so there's no hit to memory, CPU or GPU. You won't need to put your console into a Remote Play mode as you do on PS3; you can activate it at any time. Gameplay is also mirrored on-screen on both PS4 and Vita - in contrast to the existing version where the PlayStation 3 can't run a video output from the main console simultaneously. Native Vita 960x544 resolution was confirmed for gameplay streaming, with Sony coming up with an innovative solution to address the lack of buttons on the handheld.

"The Vita doesn't have all the buttons the PS4 has, namely the R3/R4 clicking and the L2/R2 analogue triggers," said Norden. "But we're going to provide some default system controller apps to map those to front touch-screen, back touchpad - whatever you want. You'll be able to customise them too."
