PlayStation 4 Console Thread

IIRC Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith were actually shot in 1080p, so it wouldn’t be possible to watch them at a higher (native) resolution. This isn’t a great loss to cinema by any means, but I think if it’s high enough resolution to watch in a cinema, then there’s probably not that much benefit in going any higher.

Vaguely related factoid, did you know when they rerender Pixar stuff for 3D/4K etc, the water is different in each version because it's randomly generated by algorithm as the footage renders? I'm sure someone somewhere is outraged at this.

I wonder how significant 60 fps is in terms of attracting console gamers. Some franchises -- CoD and Forza, famously -- have (mostly) stuck to 60 fps, despite the technical challenges; I'd imagine the dev teams must think it brings them some competitive advantage or they wouldn't bother.

Nearly zero significance. Some top level Japanese devs try to aim for 60fps in high intensity action titles to improve response time, but how many people buy them?

Insomniac even came out and declared 60fps was pointless as most people did not give a shit so they stopped developing 60fps games as a result, plus as John Carmack will tell you, doing 60fps is a massive PITA, 30fps just makes life so much easier.

So why are CoD and all the Forza games except Horizon 60 FPS then? If no-one cared, seemed like they'd have dropped that ages ago on favour of increase pretties. (Perhaps that's what happened with Horizon, of course.)

I think the COD devs think this too, which is why they've made decisions to compromise pretties to hit that frame rate target. And for all of us assuming no-one cares, you have to think the market research groups at Activision have done their homework on this.

4K is going to flop like 3D did, IMO. No-one cares, and no-one has any reason to care.

 No one cares now, but since 4K and 8K are the accepted standards and future of broadcasting, I don't think comparing it to a fad like 3D is in any way sensible.

Yes it will be for the home cinema aficionados for the near future, but a long way off, 4K will be the new standard, the majority of TV's sold will be capable of displaying it etc. Don't be so short sighted.

The only thing that might change that happening is if something fundamental changes how we watch telly. As it is, we will go for higher fidelity, so 4K and 8K are inevitable. If your Oculus Rifts and things like IllumiRoom pave a way towards holodecks or we even get actual hologram type displays then we might not get to 8K or it will be a fad but I'm not sure that next big leap will happen as quickly as we might like.

4K is going to take fucking ages though, 1080p HD still isn't the standard for broadcasting here or around the world and streaming services are just as popular as buying Blurays, so 4K for the mass market is just overkill.

I dunno -- I'm usually the last person to be cynical about new tech, but 4K offers no visible advantage to people with tellies less than 80" or so in size (which I really don't think will ever be a mainstream panel size) and huge logistical problems to broadcast, stream, and fit on optical disks. New optical format means a new player hardware, and I don't think people will go for it en masse -- contrast how much slower the takeup of Bluray was over DVDs (about an order of magnitude less IIRC).

I'm not saying it won't be significant in theatres and professional use, it absolutely will; but for home use I don't see it ever setting the world on fire.

I was about to post the same. 4K requires a really large screen. I can't see there ever being a huge market in Britain for massive panels. An 80" screen in your average living room would literally melt the viewers eyes. It would be crazy overkill.

Sony, Panasonic, Sharp etc are endlessly posting dire financial figures so they needed 3D to take off. Obviously it didn't and here we are with 4K etc. I'd imagine a genuine 'smart' tv is a better future bet for them all.

Well Horizon proved that point, just like the quote from Criterion saying how 60fps was super important, followed by them subsequently releasing all their games at 30fps :P. Some Devs do care, but the average console gamer (which was the question you asked in the first place), I don't think many do, just like they don't give a shit about poor performance, low Image Quality or controller latency or low resolution. How many console games update at 60fps?, a small fraction of the total released in the vast majority of genres.

And they're all living in abject terror of the Eye of Sauron turning onto their market. One TV to rule them all, in the land of Cupertino, where the shadows lie.

I'm sure Jobs magical tv is spectacular but they appear to be preparing to release a watch for some strange reason.

The bendable glasses tech won't be ready for proper consumer use for at least 3 years according to Corning. The Apple iTV has apparently been ready in hardware form for some time, it's the content which is holding them back, thanks to the cable companies and there monopoly's.

Oh, and the ideas for the watch / iPhone 2nd display looks awesome, but that's for another thread.

Same with Burnout Paradise (60) and Most Wanted (30). Visuals > Fluidity.
