PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Knack looks shit and the dashboard interface is so clinically boring and horrid. I can't see how anyone's excited by PS3 sequels/prequels/whateverquels in the form of Infamous (which could easily be the PS3 version) or Killzone. They're going to get trounced by Microsoft if they rest on this.

If they rest on really powerful hardware and games like Killzone at launch that have that graphical fidelity at 1080p? I don't care about Killzone but if that is what is possible at launch, the hardware has a lot to offer. Also the Metro dash on the xbox looks like shit and that is at the end of the life of the console. I exclusively use the mini guide to avoid it.

I think MS are trounced in advance if they even mention kinect 2.0 for more than 5 mins (like that will happen) or if the hardware isn't as impressive and they harp on about media services. Given the exclusive EA rumours, I hope they have some good stuff in the bag but I suspect Sony caught them off guard with the hardware which is why they will try and tie up whatever software/dlc exclusivity they can get.

I'm sure the Nextbox will have a much more exciting UI and definitely not another take on Metro.

What's wrong with boring, easy to use interfaces anyway?

It's horrid, and the complete opposite of what they were trying to do with the PS3. All this sharing rubbish and streaming (that probably won't work anyway). It's far too based online, at least, what they're showing is.

Forgetting the fact we haven't seen much of Infamous yet besides a teaser trailer and a man with a thousand-yard stare, it's very clear from what we have seen that it looks effortlessly better than Infamous 2 from a visual standpoint. Trust me, I'm playing Infamous 2 right now.

I've noticed this weird trend of people watching these videos and claiming they "don't look any different". They were doing it on the borderline unlistenable Eurogamer podcast after the event. Are these people thick or just a bit blind?

Not to mention the fact that these are actually running in 1080p now rather than murky bleary upscaled sub 720p, or that they're built on devkits with less than a quarter of the total video memory available in the final unit...

Have to say, from what I've seen it does look very clunky in comparison to the nice, quick and clean PS3 UI.

Quick?! QUICK?! We must be using different consoles. Mine takes ~5 seconds between page transitions in the PS3 store.

I want difficulty switches like on the Atari 2600.

They should be tiny dip switches hidden inside a flap.

Although I think 2600-style wood veneer should make a come back.

Gotta be trollin'. It's 2013 bro. The scrabble to transition to a device agnostic service is on. In another decade or so the idea of buying a specific Sony box to play Playstation games will be as weird as the idea of having to buy a branded Netflix box to play Netflix content. But as far as the PS4 goes, just don't connect it to your wifi. Buy all your games in boxes. No-one is stopping you.

As opposed to the PS3 dashboard which was much nicer. This seems clunky and crap-looking.

Lol

Does the PS Store count as part of the main UI?

ok, Pernickety Joe, PS Store notwithstanding, the PS3 UI is quick and clean.

Yeah. I don't like the PS Store much.

*select something*

*wait 4 seconds*

"JANG!"

I didn't realise how much Sony stuff he's had a hand in.

Seems like the perfect guy to design the system. Great choice. His surname sounds like a drunk person saying 'Sony' as well, amazing.

His job seems to mostly involve making Aldi brand versions of other publisher's games.

I think they're a bit blind. This happened on the last generation jump too where people said they couldn't really tell the difference....especially if they were playing on a SD TV. I think our brains fill in the gaps and our memories of games are nicer than the reality. A good example is Zelda:OoT where people said the 3DS version looks like how they remember, and not the horrible reality of the N64 version.

Games developers do a good job of making the most of what they have. People don't really notice the detailed "real" backgrounds of Killzone because their brains have been making do with painted backgrounds and imposters. They remember them looking as good as Killzone.

I was watching that Killzone vid thinking how amazing the environment looked, but also assuming that it's just window-dressing. Something like Watch Dogs is massively more impressive because you can look over the city and think "I can actually go there". Open world games are why I look forward to new consoles so much.

Little comparison of the controller with a 360 controller, they look to have a very similar form factor as has been said already (well done Sony). Looking forward to using it.

I think the new UI looks great, and agree on what a lot have said on Knack, would be better showcasing the likes of Killzone.
