PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Just upgraded my drive. What a long, strange trip that was.

I didn't fancy downloading everything again, so I was excited to learn you can now back up your application data. But I didn't have a drive with enough free space for the lot, and I didn't want to buy two new drives just for this. Neither did I want to mess around with my Plex library or photo backups, which are large and would have taken ages to reorganise.

Eventually I realised my wife had a 320gb drive with just a few photos on. Secure permission to use that and back up her files. Sorted.

Next I discover that the PS4 export system doesn't let you choose what to back up - you can either do it all or do nothing. Well, that's shit. So next up, I have to trim my apps down. No problem, I'll focus on stuff I can easily reinstall from disc. A little while later I've got it down to under 300gb.

But the app tells me there's not enough room on the drive. I know the drive is empty and has a single partition, but it's not having it. Well, maybe the backup adds some hidden stuff, so I delete another game. Still not enough space.

At this point I start to wonder if there's something about the drive it doesn't like. There's some stuff on forums about needing to use MBR on the drive. Maybe I'll reformat it as FAT32 to be on the safe side. Surely that always works?

So I do that using Disk Utility on OSX. No luck. Sigh. Well, maybe I have to do it the Windows way. I dig out my Acer laptop. But I've upgraded that to Windows 10, which doesn't offer FAT32 formatting. Balls! But wait, I can probably still do it on the command line. Yes! Off it goes. Ten minutes later, it's still at 0%. Balls! This is gone midnight, so it's clear I won't be doing anything until tomorrow. I leave it going and watch a movie. End of the movie, 10%. Off to bed.

Next morning, 100%! But also a message saying the drive is too large for FAT32 and the whole thing has failed. The classic 32GB partition limit! I'd forgotten all about that.

Alright then. Let's start again and just use exfat, which is back where we started but whatever. Reformat in OSX. Hook it up. Not enough space. Delete another game. By my reckoning, there's now around 280GB in total. Not enough space.

Take a deep breath. Delete a few more smaller games. Not enough space. Okay.

Let's have a look at the drive anyway. Ah, it has a PS4 folder, so clearly the file system is OK. But it still won't fit.

Delete more stuff. I'm now down to a handful of games. Should be 80GB+ free on the drive, but it still says not enough room. I'm starting to wonder if it needs a full 500GB to mirror the drive full or something stupid like that. But I've never heard that mentioned.

Maybe I will just have to bite the bullet and buy a new drive for the backup. But before that, I decide I'll delete GTAIV. That's taking up around 57gb, the biggest chunk of space on the PS4.

Get shot of that, try again. KABOOM! It works. But it also reports that there'll be 150gb free on the backup drive when I'm done, which is roughly in line with what I've been expecting all along. So I have absolutely no idea what was going on there. From last night's first attempt onwards, the PS4 was telling me the total space required was less than 320GB, but it wouldn't budge until GTAIV was removed, at which point there's an abundance of free space.

Gah! Anyway, now to unpack and dismantle my Seagate 2TB. But wait! I remember my wife, who's at a panto, has lost the garage key, and that's where the toolbox is. I get a fair way using my trusty Swiss Army knife, but the tiny screws aren't going to happen. So I have to forage around trying to find a screwdriver in the house, which eventually I somehow manage to do. Still not ideal, but I get the whole thing dismantled and remantled without damaging the drives or myself, and then, in the timeless words of Jesus, it is finished. The restore process goes smoothly for some reason, and I'm in business for, what, another year?

I mention all this because I fully expect it means Sony will announce support for external drives in the next couple of days. So enjoy that.

Oh that sounds so familiar Rowan. out of interest I just used exfat then let the ps4 do its thing. A ps4 drive in a pc looks mental, it has about 20 partitions on it if you stick it back in to have a look.

I put my 2tb argos drive (thats what you want johnny, just google ps4 2tb drive, plenty of articles on it) into my new machine, had to download the full software update onto a usb stick, installed, it worked, thank fuck.

then the next day I got a shock, PS4 wouldnt turn on. Same as when my last one broke, turned out it was a loose power lead that I only realised was knocking itself on and off, watched the ps4 safe mode hdd checker with baited breath but thank god it was ok.

then I found out that I had to activate this as my new ps4, the only way is online by deactivating all my other devices

then I found out that Rocket League doesnt upload saves to the cloud automatically like every other game I had, so I lost all my stuff and profile

tldr: by the way the best way to do it is on a pc using disk management in control panel, remove all the weird ps4 partitions, exfat the drive and youre done, whack it in a ps4 with the full software file (800mb) on a usb inside UPDATE\PS4

Sounds like fun!

I've decided to upgrade the HDD on my PS4. Is there a recommended 2TB drive to get? I've been downloading digital versions of games recently and my 320GB is almost full.

I used this, which was recommended in several places and seems to be working fine:

A slight arse to open up without breaking the case, but I managed it so there's hope for everyone. The original PS4 drive is in the shell and housing my photo library, which is a bonus because that was on a USB 2.0 drive before.

Also the backup procedure was fine in theory - if I'd had a spare large drive rather than a load of scrappy smaller ones, I expect it would have been no problem at all.

I could have just downloaded stuff again as I needed it - that was my original plan, before I learned the backup feature had been added - but, you know, it's the principle. Always the principle, ruining everything.

By the way, I also stuck my head into CEX as a dare and, judging by the state of the shelves, I expect the PS4 did quite well this Christmas. About ten copies of Phantom Pain and then a few other random titles scattered around the otherwise empty shelves. Can't have been more than 25 games in total.

I backed up my saves (3.3gb) to a 16g stick, because I didnt fancy backing up the whole drive. Did the drive swap, and realised I'd got the update, rather than the fresh install version of 3.11. Which I put on a small stick

But I'm done.

Even put the old 500gb in the seagate caddy, blew the LED on the sata adaptor though...

The LED on the old PS4 HDD doesn't work when put into the caddy (this has happened to myself and a few people I know).

Not sure whether it is a case of the LED doesn't exist on the old drive or it doesn't work.

If I were to upgrade my hard drive, would I be able to re-download P.T. onto it? I'll be damned if I'm losing the scariest interactive experience ever committed to a hard drive.

nope. I had it and tried re-downloading it a few weeks ago but it wouldn't let me.

Yeah, backup & restore should do it. In light of my recent misadventures: if you were just planning on starting afresh (i.e. downloading everything again) post-update, you could delete everything but PT from your PS4, back that up and then make the swap and restore it. You won't need a huge amount of space to do that.

Fucking dick... I had to take apart our launch DS4 as the left trigger was busted (registering as pressed constantly) fixed that, but now it won't charge :(

I should never be allowed to play with tech.

Ribbon cable. Its really common, that.

2016 looks pretty exciting right up until they include a beta in the lineup :sherlock:

Even so SFV, Gravity Rush 2 and Nier are insta-purchases for me (I already have Street Fighter preordered), and No Man's Sky may be a thing.

The lack of realism in the games in that trailer makes me happy. Had been wondering what the point of having a ps4 was since I gave my gaming pc a major upgrade lately, but I feel good about it again having watched that.

A good time for gaming.

That trailer is incredible! So much colour and imagination, it looks almost Dreamcast era like.

Nice to see its not just a compilation of shooty marines, racing cars and American Football.

Gran Turismo not withstanding...
