PlayStation 4 Console Thread

A very "nice" interview with Andrew House in The Guardian. Some choice quotes:

When we started out in the business, the founders of the organisation had a very strong focus on taking creative risks, and believed that bringing something new to games was what we should be all about, he says.

You look back at some of the early Artdink games that came out, like Aquanauts Holiday and PaRappa The Rapper; the latter wasnt a huge seller, but we all still talk about it. Its great to see that spirit still in the organisation: its certainly something I encourage.

I think since Phil Spencer took on leadership of [Microsofts Xbox division], he has been very honest about their approach. Hes been, in a very gentlemanly way, complimentary about us in the past. But if you look at something like Augmented Reality for them or virtual reality for us, were both trying to build a category overall. At the end of the day, there is a shared goal of great experiences for gamers.

I wish some PS4 games were more honest with the ready to play thing. You see the white bar fill up, think 'Great' and press X. In Battlefront you then have to spend 20 minutes poncing around a small map playing horde mode. Just put in Fallout and now watching and install percentage slowly creep up.

Looks like the machine has been jailbroken.

I was thinking about the possibly of running PS4 games on my PC the other day without buying the hardware. I'll gladly hand Sony over the money for the games I wanted to play but not fussed about having another lump of hardware under the TV for the odd couple of exclusives I want to play.

Anyway not the best news for Sony I expect it'll be patched at some point.

Nice hit and run. Do you even read what you post? Or even look at the link, which clearly has a question mark as part of it?

CTurt commented that "you could say that PS4 is now officially Jailbroken", producing a torrent of Twitter requests for piracy, but the truth is that the short-term damage offered by this exploit is minimal. It seems that the exploit was carried out on a PlayStation 4 running the ancient firmware 1.76, and it was patched out of existence with the 2.0 system software update.

If you can get kernel level access on a previous firmware then it's a start. Still need to get at various encryption keys to make further progress but it's a start.

The fact it's on an older firmware is still a valid attack method as we've seen on PS3 and Psp. You just need to work out a way of allowing the machines to downgrade the firmware to one that has the exploit.

So it's not a hit and drive post. Perfectly valid and informative.

I'm surprised that it's got Jimmy and Haribo' knickers in a twist.

I'm sure the xboxone will have similar holes in it's security if it helps you crybabies sleep better.

A hacked current gen console is worthless in 2015, everything they do is linked to online. Multiplayer, patches, game sharing, twitch, streaming, tv apps. Only an idiot would think downloading 50gb isos is worth sacrificing every single bit of funcionality bar the campaign.

Apologies no I didn't read it all the way through just thought it would be an interesting topic to discuss. I will be deleting the original post.

Still think it would be interesting if you could somehow play PS4 content elsewhere though without actually owning a machine through the PS Now service on a PC for example....

Anyway wasn't intending to cause any friction. And for the record I do usually read stuff that I link to before I post. Evidentially this time I didn't read deep enough.

Have a good day and once again apologies if I wound anyone up it wasn't intentional just an accident.

Agree and I expect the Bone will too. Anyway personally I'd love to play all the content from all the consoles in once place without having a mess of consoles and wires under the TV. Wont happen for a while everything gets emulated eventually so just have to wait it out I guess.

Its piracy though mate. Pay people for their games.

No you mistake what I meant. I pay for all my games and don't do piracy.

For example I've being using the PS2 emulator on the PC but using the original PS2 disks. To be more precise I've been ripping my original PS2 disks to the HDD. Technically I guess this might be breaking some T&Cs but given I own a couple of physical PS2 systems and all the boxed retail games can't see it being a massive issue. Its just more convenient to have them on the PC to play whenever the mood takes me.

I was just saying that I don't mind buying the games to play but just don't want the physical machines. Really hoping that at some point I could play say Uncharted 4 without having to buy the console hardware itself. Whether it be through a Sony service (PS Now) or another way.

Fair enough. I play snes games on my wii, but I spent a fortune on the buggers 20 years ago so I feel i'm not harming anyone, and I support current nintendo with purchases.

Well indeed. But I'm continuing to access what I have bought... don't really want to buy them again well not unless they are enhanced in some way.

I also bought some VC games on the Wii too... although can't seem to play those on the WiiU.

Anyway going OT so I'll stop there!! :)

I dont support VC stuff because they tend to be poor bare bones rom dumps, sometimes even 50hz like Super Metroid. Sega of all people do amazing XBLA stuff like the Streets of Rage collection, every regions rom, scanlines, save states etc, bought that immediately.

But anyway, ps4 on pc isnt coming any time soon, just buy the box.

And that's an incredible overreaction. It takes two seconds to check whether your facts add up and it's just lazy. That's all.

Piracy and emulation as a general topic is interesting for sure! Start a new thread on it.

There was that very clever hack reported a while back where shops in various less advanced nations were essentially cloning PS4s to allow people to not pay for games, I think that worked online.

Indeed and I usually do... My bad. Like I said the post wasn't made to annoy people or cause any friction. Anyway.... I deleted because my post was factually wrong in the end. However the story was interesting to read (when I read through in detail :))

I know and knowing me I will on the end... :)
