8 PS2 classics going up on the Playstation Store US and Europe.

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2015/12/04/fan-favorite-ps2-games-launching-on-ps4-tomorrow/

I don't mind paying for something that has been reworked with trophy support. Please chances for a FFXII release...

I says "fan favourites" there. But I can't see any fan favourites. Just yet more GTA re-releases and some dross.

Mixed feelings about this.

On the one hand if you didn't buy these back in the day some of these are bargains. There's plenty of scope there to undercut used scalpers on ebay taking the piss. If you haven't bought them in the past they're probably worth paying now. I don't have a problem with this sort of preservation.

As for existing owners

-For people who owned the PS2 versions (and still do.) To not get even a discount is a bit of a kicker. Some of us bought the PS2 version over the other versions back in the day because Sony reps talked about a continuing ecosystem. Which they dropped on the PS3. Dropping bc altogther was the main reason I didn't get a PS3 (it was a no-brainer until that point.)I walked away from consoles altogether until about three years ago when Phelan gave me his old 360. Speaking of which this is a direct contrast to Microsoft's bc. "You can buy old games, but if you have proof of purchase in the form of a disc/digital download it's yours for free."

-For people who bought PS3 versions....this is a real kick in the teeth. It's definately a contrast to the MS version of doing things. And there's the unspoken thought of "buy these again for your PS4 and when the PS5 comes out you can buy them. Again! Yay!"

For those who haven't played the games on offer, Dark Cloud is worth picking up. It looked lovely back in the day and if they can get that working via emulation they can pretty much do anything.

I noticed that although they don't mention any discounts or anything for existing Classics owners, they don't definitively state that there won't be something like that. Perhaps they're hoping to keep an eye on how terribly unpopular that decision proves so they can say "oh, we meant to say that they're all <price/free> if you already had them on PS3!".

The fact that they're implemented as PS4 games on the store means that'd have to be done through Cross-buy of course.

It's a shame really that Sony didn't follow MS's example if you have the disk of a game that has been re-released stick it in and it will download it free for you. Guess it's too much faffing around for Sony. Obviously they think there is a demand though for playing PS2 games hence the emulator and trying to sell them.

Anyway PS2 emulators work great on the PC if anyone has a PC.

I have a PS2.

I have a PS1, PS2, PS3 and most generations of the other consoles. I play on my PS4.

Who has time for all of this old stuff? I mean, who would actually sit down and play Mark of Kri (which is a great game) rather than Fallout 4 or Skyrim or something?

I bought GTA Vice City when it was emulated on the PS3, as it is my favourite one; 80's music; got the Miami Vice

I can't believe the same game is on its 3rd Playstation albeit being spruced up now....

£12 seems a bit steep, even if it now has 1080p and Trophy support

Considering that the up-rendering will be a feature of the emulator, and everything else (SharePlay, Remote Play etc.) except the trophy support is a feature of the PS4 OS it'll be mean-fisted of Sony to not allow existing digital PS2 purchases to allow access to the re-re-releases.

I'm genuinely puzzled as to how they manage to integrate trophies into ISOs

Pure guesswork, but:

Emulator loads ISO and runs the PS2 environment. Alongside the ISO, the emulator receives an extra lump of data with the trophy assignments. These are expressed in terms of memory states within the emulated PS2's virtual memory. When the specific state is reached, the trophy pops, and the emulator communicates this back to the PS4's OS.

Did you see the bit about not being able to read the discs?

By design though huh? Thought PS2 disks are just DVD's and the PS4 plays DVDs no? Surely the fact it can play DVDs would mean that it can technically read a DVD disk and so a PS2 disk. Anyway evidently Sony have locked it down for whatever reason.

Whatever... Glad I can at least use the PC to play them... which is handy because I don't have a PS2 hooked up anymore whereas the PC is always there.

I thought someone had already checked the ps4 drive specs and it said it could read dvd's?

Well that's what I read. PS2 disks are just DVDs. I was also surprised to learn that the PS4 doesn't play music CDs either. I kind of assumed that this was a given. Especially as Sony have a music division. Suppose everything is going digital anyway.
