PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Before was $399 by itself right? Fairly aggressive move - what does the bone retail for officially?

Yup, it's been $399 sans game since launch, over here.

I believe the XB1 is $349 with a game, $399 for 1TB with a game (inc. limited editions, like F6) and various 499 bundles that include Kinect, games, etc.

As one of the saner Xbox One owning forumites it'd be interesting to read your impressions.

Thank 'ee kindly, see below.

Official price drop in the US, $350 with a game.

Typical bad timing. Never mind, I had an unexpected refund to use so it was a quasi-impulse luxury purchase.

So, first impressions then:

Positives

The unit is incredibly small and light in comparison to the Bone, no bulky power unit either.

Extremely quick and easy to set up. Didn't take any chances with Wiifii but stuck a LAN in and it gobbled up the version 3.0 upgrade pretty quickly.

Quick to download Netflix (looks identical to Bone version), iplayer etc.

Store looks fairly simple to navigate and seems to have more demos available, or at least a separate section for them.

Instant notification of all downloads, even if free, unlike the Bone.

Details of exact amount of download pending available, mysteriously absent from Bone.

Then took my time to set up a PSN account which is economical with the truth in certain respects.

My ID here is Cosmic_Deb (there are various phoney Cosmic Gurus out there, be warned). Please send me an invite if you wish albeit I'm principally an RPG fan who doesn't do much MP.

The selection of avatars is rubbish. A rubber duck will suffice for now.

Decided against purchasing PSN+ for the time being.

(All purchases will be made by prepaid card of course).

No issues with spinning up Unchartered for a couple of chapters.

On to the negatives

I'm being completely honest here and not trolling. My main system has been XB since the original one; I've had good experiences with PS2 but skipped PS3 entirely. I simply can't help thinking and feeling this to be more of a toy than the equivalent XB, even though I know its more powerful and roughly the same price (or maybe more expensive at present). Something about it just feels more lightweight somehow and after playing the PS2 over the summer it feels remarkably familiar. I know under the bonnet things have moved on considerably but the surface experience is uncannily similar.

To specifics:

I don't care for the background display, the wishy washy blue, but all the alternative colours look worse (and I'm not paying for one). At least the annoying music can be switched off.

The hud seems a bit overcomplicated and cluttered with icons at present, again one of those things which don't bother you after a while since you simply disregard the inessentials after a while. Moving around is pretty quick but then again I don't have anything like an friends activity feed to slow matters up yet.

The unit seems to be heating up at an alarming rate - its in the open but the top casing was pretty hot after a couple of hours.

The unit seems to make a faint metallic hum.

The controller is probably the most significant issue in these early hours. Without batteries, its much lighter of course. I'm wedded to the sticks being in their staggered positions on the Bone, it seems more natural given the uses of the left thumb, but the bigger problem seems to be the very small and awkward to find and press share and options buttons. Who on earth thought they were a good idea? Surely the front touch pad could have been smaller? Also what does the colour of the panel signify - is it battery level? Do I need to keep this thing plugged in most of the time?

The pad does rumble. It can be turned on and off. Also, definitely go into the pad setting and dim the light.

Cheers.

What did you play to make it heat up so much?

Just some Unchartered (machine must have been on for around 3 hours total).

Yes they do. I'll ping a friends request to ya.

Cheers.

Colour is mainly for fun. Can denote player colour in multiplayer games, and in Hotline Miami is pulses in time with the music - generally I find it a bit pointless and has blatantly been included because it'll be needed for Playstation VR.

Battery life is shockingly poor - I have two pads which I rotate between - really not sure how people actually manage with just one.

One word of advice re: the controller battery life - it's a lot better if you go into the system settings and set the LED brightness to 'dim'; at that point its lifespan becomes at least better than the Wii U gamepad (I tend to get around 8 hours between charges)

If you managed to snag one of the newer model PS4s (it will have an all-matte finish if so), they do run hotter than the original version. Improved internals means it can run hotter and quieter for longer, without sounding like an aircraft like many original PS4 owners complain about. It has always run hotter than the Xbone, mind, due to the form factor.

Welcome to the club. :)

There's a couple of decent free themes up. Witcher ones are nice

Witcher saves the day, thanks.

Now done - clearly keeping it plugged in is impracticable for most set ups anyway with such a short cord.

Yes, its a matte finish 1TB one.

My heart sank when I heard the PS4's sticks were symmetrical but in practice it's not been an issue. Share and option aren't very well defined, no.

I like the massive trackpad - quite a few games use it as a two button combo, while its shape makes it distinct from the options and share buttons in a way that simply having four middle buttons wouldn't.

Can't say I've ever enjoyed its use as an actual trackpad, mind.

Well, exactly. Even in instances where a trackpad makes sense (e.g GTAV's in-game internet) it's hopeless.

What rafaqat said. I have the charging dock and 2 pads, with the result that I don't need to worry about battery life of the controllers at all.

It's a pretty first-world solution to a problem that shouldn't really need addressing in the first place, granted, but it works.
