PlayStation 4 Console Thread

Thanks. So not only do I need an external USB drive just to carry the backup, it needs to not have any data I want to keep on it, as the PS4 will wipe it when backing up onto it?

Seems like the easiest option is to 'borrow' a second one of those Seagate drives from Argos then return it when I'm done.

When I upgraded my PS3 I just backed all my saves up, replaced the drive, redownloaded the games and restored the saves. Didn't need a separate hard drive - a 4GB flash drive was enough.

we have anecdotal reports of 900MB savegames on PS4. It may not be enough anymore.

Wish I had time to check mine.

I've got at least 100GB of captured footage I don't want to lose.

I think I've figured out how to do it without getting a second USB drive:

  • Copy the PS4 backup files from the USB drive to my MacBook
  • Take the 2TB drive out of the USB caddy, remove my PS4's 500GB drive, and place that drive in the USB caddy
  • Use my MacBook to format the 500GB drive and copy the PS4 backup files across
  • Install new 2TB drive into PS4, at which point presumably the PS4 will want to format it
  • Plug 500GB drive, which is now in the USB caddy and contains the PS4 backup files, into the PS4
  • Restore all my files
  • My old 500GB drive is now in the USB caddy ready to be used on my Xbone or whatever.

Should work, right?

That is exactly how I did it Pob, and it worked fine. (I too didn't want to lose all my captures).

I'd recommend deleting all the big games you have on disc to make the backup as small as possible - it takes quite a while over USB.

Cheers! I've already done the first PS4 > USB drive backup so I'm halfway there. Copying across to the Mac was about 10 times quicker, presumably due to USB3. So I've only got one 5-hour transfer left to do which'll put my PS4 out of action. Ideal, as MGSV should be arriving today <_<

Much better deal at Amazon.de: PlayStation 4 (500GB) inc. DriveClub, Little Big Planet 3 and The Last of Us: Remastered, £244.08.

Buy a 2TB drive for £50-60 and swap the 500gb one out immediately. All you need is a power cable - it's just a regular two pin socket on the back (the one that looks like a sideways 8).

More deals at savygamer if you don't want to order from abroad. http://savygamer.co.uk/?s=Ps4&submit=Ok

Got 2 friends coming over today, they signed in as guests last time and when we disconnected they had to sign in again which was a bit of a chore.

Are there any drawbacks to signing in through "create account" and then obviously not activating it as their primary ps4?

You can't play their games on your machine without logging into their account and being online, but otherwise it's fine.

I gave my brother my PS4 and told him to play everybody's gone to the rapture. He couldn't as I wasn't signed on, but the game only has the one save slot so he didn't want to overwrite mine by playing on my profile. Can he use two controllers, sign in as me, then sign in as himself and play on his own profile? I can drop off my second pad (I kept it to use on PS3/PS tv) to him if that works

Absolutely nothing at all.

I wonder if they've got anything in development which would benefit from it, as going off launch sales, it did actually sell quite well. I don't think we'll get (or really want) any camera only games, but I'm surprised we haven't seen it used as an optional extra more often. I guess it'll have it's day in the sun when Morpheous launches, as o my knowledge you need a camera for that.

Until Dawn uses the camera to record your reactions.

Can't see me playing that one, I don't enjoy scary games.

Something like the kid games on the 360 with Kinect would be good.

The adventure & Kinect animals titles were enjoyed by the kids.

Does the media player even work at all? I've got a USB stick which it recognises, but NOTHING shows up. Formatted to exFAT, music is in a folder called 'MUSIC', video is in a folder called 'VIDEO', file formats are supported. But nothing. "No Playable Media" apparently.

Edit: I've got it working now, I needed to select 'Master Boot Record' as the partition scheme when formatting the drive.
