PlayStation 4 Console Thread

I've been playing lots of Rocket League and going back to the digital version of Plants vs Zombies Garden Warfare. Fan noise is there but inaudible when playing. Stick a disc in, though, and it starts to get angry. It's the same with my Wii U. As much as I like to have physical copies, I am being pushed towards a digital future. Apart from on Xbone. That handles anything and everything with silent dignity.

I got my PS4 from Amazon on launch. It's also pretty noisy and has been for a while meaning I haven't used it much recently as I prefer the much quieter xbox one, I thought the PS4 was just naturally louder but it looks like I should be pushing for a swap. Any thoughts on whether I should go to Amazon or Sony direct, different retailers appear to be handling this in various ways.

Yeah speak to retailer and use the SOGA angle and quote the stuff that Retroed mentioned a few pages back basically

1) It is over 12 months old

2) It is very noisy

3) Sony are saying it is probably a manufacturing defect with application of thermal paste

4) Therefore it should be repaired (or replaced if repair not possible) as it should be durable for reasonable period (upto 6 years) and the manufacturer is accepting there are manufacturing flaws in attaching heatsink so there should be no need for engineers report (they can ask for this under SOGA to prove there is manufacturing flaw)

Point 4 and sony's admittance is where it might get sticky if the retailer wants to push it. Retroed spoke to Sony and had his fault logged with reference number which he quoted to retailer i.e.. Sony pretty much admitting to manufacturing flaw and here is my reference number. He can probably say better on this.

I didn't need to do the extra stuff as Argos were great

Edit - this is an honest even handed rundown of SOGA .. it doesnt do what some do and claim you get an automatic 6 yr coverage (as my dad always claims after getting Asda to replace a 5yr old £10 toaster - which I'm sure they did just to shut him up :) )

If anybody is thinking about sending their noisy PS4 back to GAME, don't bother.

I've just had a message left which says that they have serviced my machine, they couldn't find a fault, and that it is on its way back to me.

Brilliant.

Boring PS4 repair update: Just received an email saying my PS4 is coming back to me from the Sony repair centre and should arrive tomorrow.

No details as to whether they found a fault or not, so will have to wait and see. Just over 7 days for it to be returned to me is good going though.

It's funny how this has started to spread. I think all PS4s reach quite a high volume from time to time, it's just that most people have chosen to tolerate it. Mine gets a bit noisy occasionally but nothing I haven't experienced before on other consoles.

Are people who have had theirs serviced/replaced satisfied that it's considerably quieter?

So I couldn't add funds, or buy anything on the PS store both on Friday and Saturday. Rang and emailed PS Support and was told there was a block on my payment details for no apparent reason and I had to wait (24 hours from the guy on the phone, 72 according to the email response  ). I waited, and today tried to add funds to my wallet. What a surprise, still not working. So I've rang and complained again, and the guy said he's escalated the issue, and that he's not seen it take this long for it to rectify the problem.

Thing is the Paypal deal ends this Friday, so if they cant resolve it then I cant use the Paypal deal at all :hmm:

I remember the difference in noise between the original 360 and then the Dashboard update allowing you to install games. It really made all the difference to atmosphere, there were several music tracks in Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion that I had not heard up to that point because the ambient tracks were washed out by the DVD drive!

If it comes back with no fault detected then I'm really not going to be happy.

As I said level of noise I got was louder than a launch 360 with lots of disc access. PS3 levels of noise if you forced it to max fan speed.

a few weeks in and it was super loud during some games.

By time I went in to sort it out it was loud in every game and so loud I rarely playd it as I found it distracting compared to my Xbox ONe.

I am pretty forgiving of niggles in hardware (you have to as a console owner!) but it was too loud for me.

The new one is... so far... silent as silent as Xbox One.

To be blunt its more powerful than Xbox One in a smaller case with an internal PSU. I am surprised it doesnt catch fire, it is obviously going to be louder than Xbox One due to laws of thermodynamics/physics... However I think there are limits.

Well my repair has been authorised and got the labels through. Will likely send it off this weekend. Suprised at how easy it was and how I received no resistance to me basically saying "look my console works fine but is annoyingly loud" - it isn't broken, though to me it likely will if this carries on, but still could have fobbed me off. I've had two experiences with sony customer service and weirdly both times have been great! The other time my account was hacked and after calling, I had it back within 10 mins. I think if you want a digital refund, the shitty policies the staff have to run with mean they are terrible, but if they're allowed to help you, the customer service bit is actually pretty good.

Is this noise thing really a problem then? I can't remember such uproar over the 360, and we all lived with that for a good few years.

If you google it you'll see it was pretty widespread. My original ones were mental. The install to hard drive option was essential for my upstairs 360 when it came along as it drown out the sounds from the game

You can't remember them basically overheating and dying, seriously? It was a very well documented design fault.

I notice that Playstation Now has now been released. How is it to use and play?

I was blown away with how well it worked during the beta, it's super impressive technically, you forgot that the game is being streamed within minutes. It's a shame they haven't been able to come up with a compelling enough proposition for me to actually pay for it now they are charging, the pricing model just seems way out of whack. Perhaps they should start giving out PS now games on PS+

I'd be up for a Spotify type unlimited service for £10 per month I think.

They have it in the US, for $20 per month. I thought it was excellent during beta, I just can't justify that subscription cost for the amount of time I have to play, these days.

I actually owned a launch 360 until the Elite came out, which was when I did the swap. That Elite is now in my son's room. I never had a 360 fuck up on me.

Skills.

I've owned 5. Launch died, replacement DOA, 3rd sold, 4th (a Jasper) died after 6 years solid use but lives again after an x plate replacement, and the 5th is a slim. I reckon you were quite lucky.

Good to know that I should keep an eye on the fan. I definitely can't hear it, but maybe a little compressed air into the fan periodically will ensure it stays well cooled.

Hey guys, have they changed the PayPal stuff on the webstore?

You can't just add, say £30 anymore. You have to add PayPal as a payment agreement, which means it just mimics a credit card and stays listed on your PSN account. This means if it gets hacked then people can fuck your life by buying hundreds of pounds worth of Fifa packs and Farming simulators.

What gives? I'm sure you used to be able add money when you wanted and not have Sony store anything.
