Alright, jerkfaces, I've got a PS4 coming next week and I want to know what's good. I already have every PS+ released game, Bloodborne is coming with the system and I know Helldivers is a must, but what else should I be looking for (PSN and retail)?

That's about it to be honest.

EDIT: Well, I wouldn't bother with Bloodbourne personally, but y'know.

Knack

From what I have played Shadow of Mordor, Wolfenstein New Order & Witcher 3 are very good.

I should probably have mentioned that if it's a multiplatform with PC title I've likely already played it if it interested me - all of the above I already have.

The one exception is bloody Arkham Knight, of course, but I already know about that, and am resisting the urge to just buy it and ignore the unplayable copy in my Steam library.

That's about it to be honest.

Ah, I'm not too hopeful of enjoying it, but the best bundle I could find included it (£298 for PS4 + Bloodborne + PS TV [or The Order, but I'm not insane] + [3 months French PS+]), and if I don't enjoy it it'll be a quick £20 back or so.

Someone just ring PayPal (it's an 0800 number, so should cost nowt) and explain that everyone you know is getting the same message, and asking how to activate the deal. They'll sort it out.

Currently doing that, and stuck on hold.

Edit: They said they've not had any issues/complaints/whatever, so as long as you can pay through the console using paypal they cant see why the deal wouldnt work.

Knowing my luck it wont work now though

Wiper you'll want Driveclub, of which the free PS+ Edition is now available.

Infamous Second Son. Not quite up there with the PS3 games but enjoyable nonetheless.

The Order. The best looking game to date. Just don't expect any great shakes gameplay wise, it's a solid third person shooter.

Because you have a PC and no doubt Vita/PS3 you've probably played a lot of the other games worth having.

The Last of Us is great but I don't think you like Naughty Dog if memory serves?

In that case switch my post around & go for Knack :)

Oh & Journey get this

I'm guessing I should already have Journey for free, as I have the PS3 version? Quite looking forward to replaying that.

I'd assumed you were joking about Knack - is it not actually rubbish?

I enjoyed Knack but I played with my 7 year old daughter & she liked it, overall it does not get good reviews.

Journey yes you will have on crossbuy.

Last of Us is a good shout by Stanley it's better than the Uncharted games.

Thanks for the list! I'll be trying Driveclub for sure, what with it being free; I'd actually forgotten about it, so probably good to be reminded. I never really got on with the previous Infamous games, but I'll happily try it if/when it's cheap. The Order I thought had gotten a generally poor reception? I mean, if it's ever ridiculously cheap/free I'll happily try it, but I don't know if I'd want to rush out and spend money on the PS4's answer to Ryse. And, er, yeah, I'm not a huge fan of TLOU based on the PS3 version, nor Naughty Dog's modern input in general, but if it's ever cheap I'll try and see what I think of it after more than a few hours of play.

Should you not have looked to see if it had anything you wanted before buying the PS4?

I know all about the reams of PS+ games I have sitting in my library, wanting me to play them, and will be wanting to grab Persona 5 later in the year. Plus Helldivers, of course - oh, and I very much fancy Axiom Verge too.

But yeah, retail-wise I've generally let things wash over me - while I've tried to keep abreast of the games that are actually out, the fact is that without owning the console I'm likely to have forgotten half of the games that have come out, and considering that the early life of a console often sees minor classics come out and be swiftly forgotten (e.g. Condemned, Crackdown, Toy Commander) I thought I'd check up on what might have dropped out of my memory banks.

You gave up on TLoU within a few hours, thus missing all the good stuff. Ah well!

If Helldivers is a must, I don't know what Destiny is. (I do really: it's a must must, if you value online co-op shooty stuff to the extent that Helldivers is a must. But: grind, though. I guess if you don't like loot and grind, and grind and loot, maybe not. But then, it also has THE BEST STORY AND WRITING IN A VIDEO GAME. I know how highly you value those qualities, so I can firmly recommend Destiny on that basis alone.)

Seriously though, it is a very good shooter indeed. Halo meets PSO etc etc.

Even more seriously though, I guess you'll be wanting some PSN stuff. Now, these recommendations might not be suitable for everyone, but bear this in mind: I didn't really think much of Brothers - it was ok-ish for gameplay, nothing great, but the graphics and story did nothing at all for me. Sound familiar? Well, you'll be trusting these recommendations then:

  • Journey (again) - for nothing, yes
  • Hohokum (criminally underrated screensaver-cum-relaxathon-cum-snake-collectemup-cum-space disco on acid: ignore the naysayers)
  • Resogun and (even) Super Stardust Ultra if they're your kind of shmup things
  • I'd also have said Transistor and Unfinished Swan, but like a lot of other PSN stuff they're only console exclusives so you'll probably have played them on PC, or won't like them anyway, or both*.

So yeah, those and Driveclub, because it's free on PS+, so why not.

* But since you'll already have these in your library for nowt owing to your PS+ sub, again, might as well.

Bloodborne? Oh. I've really enjoyed the following:

Planetside 2 - free to play shooter (wait! come back!) that is played on a massive scale. Very daunting at first and often bewildering and manic, I'm really enjoying this at the moment - feels very different to everything else around.

Escape Goat 2 - currently on sale, this is generally more of the same platformer puzzler as the first. Require a fair amount of dexterity and is very cleverly designed.

Otherwise I would save your pennies for N++, Galax-Z and Everybodys Gone to the Rapture over the next three weeks.

Thankfully I know how godawful the plot of Destiny is or you might have suckered me in there, and the truth is if it weren't for the damned grindyness and onlineness of it (I loved Helldivers for its local multiplayer, none of this online muck) I would have shot out and bought it, but as it stands, not so much :(

And damn it, Gorf, that list of PSN games you've given is brilliant... which, unfortunately, I know because I own all of the games already (on PS3 and/or Vita, or, in the case of Transistor, PC). How dare you have excellent taste while also not recommending new games to me! Good job on not rating Brothers, by the way. You can stay.

Planetside 2 I'll probably pass on, and puzzle platformers of Escape Goat's type don't really appeal to me - however, I'd completely forgotten that N++ (!) and Everybody's Gone to the Ratpure (!!) were coming out soon, and have absolutely no idea what Galax-Z is, so thanks for the heads up there!

Oh yeah. Bloodborne, it has to be said, is an absolute classic. I mean, even if the game's not for you, it has that quality of 'oh shit son, this is a classic for the ages which I just happen to be no good at / biased against'. Its quality, the care taken in its design, its vision, are all just too overwhelming to deny. And it's such a video gamey video game. It's RE4 for the current decade, basically. Just undeniably great. (Albeit a fucking nightmare from time to time if you hit a block. But that's all part of the game's 'charm'.)

Edit: Ah yes, Vita. Well I guess you've seen it all before then thanks to cross-buy. But... big TV, I suppose. 1080Ps, surround sound, all that jazz.

The Order is a bad game and you, especially, would loathe it Wiper, given it's a set-piece driven, linear third person shooter where you have practically no control and which isn't even a good example of the genre. Don't waste your money on that even for cheap.

Bloodborne is incredible - of my fave games of all time. It isn't for everyone, but that is part of the reason it is so good - it doesn't make compromises in the design of the game to cater for the widest possible audience.

Surround sound, I wish! But yeah, despite having them on PS3 I'm very happy to play through shinier versions of Hohokum and Unfinished Swan again, they were utterly delightful the first time through and I'm sure they'll be just the same the second time around.

Oh dear. I actually quite enjoyed Gears of War despite all its trappings, annoying "walk with a radio" sections and super-linearity due to it simply being a solid shooter, and Vanquish and Binary Domain are amongst my favourite games of all time, so I was slightly hoping The Order might actually be a decent shooter once you got past its set-pieces and cut-scenes.

Just to confirm: My "there are no games apart from PS+ ones" is more of a compliment to PS+ than it is an insult to PS4.

It really is. Ask Davros - you know how big a fan of RE4 he was/is, right? And how much he hated (on his first ownership of it) Demon's Souls. Well, I think even he - or especially he - would probably agree with my statement. It's so good it even got him to try Demon's again, and actually enjoy it. It turned him. And lots of other people rate it as highly too, people who also love RE4. It really is a classic.

Exactly how many hours in is the good stuff?

The really good stuff? As many hours as it takes you to hit the woods or a bit beyond, more or less, is a not uncommon estimate. Up to that point is essentially tutorial, and the story and characters develop but slowly until then. But then there's a slow tightening of a grip which ends up being iron. It never lets go after that.

You're killing me Gorf, I'm currently having to do the typing equivalent of biting my tongue and it's excruciating.

I mean, you do know, right?

Thank god for that!

Well, I'm still hoping to enjoy it, even if Demon's and Dark Souls weren't for me. I do enjoy games that are challenging, so long as they keep my interest - be it through the application of constant pressure, sheer delightful infuriation or simply by having the most ridiculously satisfying controller - so the concept of a balls-hard action-y RPG-y thing appeals, it's just not yet clicked with me. With luck, Bloodborne will be to the Souls series as Persona 4 was to the RPG, or Little Big Adventure and Beyond Good and Evil were to the Zelda-like: a game to let me finally nod my head and go "Ah! So that's what all the fuss was about!".

So I shall hope, and try it.

If it helps Wiper, I think RE4 is massively overrated by this forum and is merely a great game. Bloodborne is such a brilliantly designed world. Very otherworldly, and expertly put together. I love Dark Souls too, but the biggest difference is the speed of combat which elevates into a much better action-driven game.
