In a move that will surprise absolutely nobody, Sony have removed the 80% off GotY edition and replaced it with a £25 base game with the expansion packs as separate purchases. 🖕

Is that Sony? Surely that's CDPR themselves?* And it's fair enough arguably, it's been reduced so many times for ages while we all knew this free upgrade was coming. Even after the trailer reveal it was still on sale for a little bit.

*In that case ot should be the same deal on Xbox but I can't check right now

I'm assuming this is the case but I've not seen it asserted anywhere, but this upgrade applies to the DLCs as well I assume? I've not been able to face them because I pretty much 100%ed the main game (I even did the godforsaken sea treasures) - and as you can imagine had my fill of the world by then. But I feel one day I will return to the DLCs as they are so highly regarded.

Yep, it's the whole package.

...and it's the perfect time to get on the case with the DLC. Hearts of Stone in particular is just a perfect 10-15 hours revisit back to the world. Blood & Wine is no slouch either and is an entirely new area so feels different enough after spending so long in the main areas.

Ah nice, thanks. Maybe they are shorter than I thought then. I heard Hearts of Stone also introduces new quests into the main map, is that right?

HoS is relatively short but B&W is another 30-40 hours. Totally worth it though and depending on how long it's been since you played the main game, with the upgraded visuals and mechanics, it'll feel more like a sequel.

Yes, HoS integrated in to the main game if you have it installed and you can start it very early if you so wish. A quest appears in your log marked as HoS and you can go off and do that if you like if you are high enough level. It does have some dialogue changes and stuff if you do it before the end but nothing to worry about. It takes place in Novigrad and Oxenfurt so you can still do other side quests and stuff from the main game if you like.

B&W likewise appears quite early as a quest you can go off and do but it takes you to a completely new area and definitely works better as a post game adventure.

Everything is very clearly signposted as DLC quests so they can just sit there until you're ready.

If I only have The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt on Steam do I need to buy the GOTY edition to get all the fancy new things?

Nope, you can get the Expansion pass and save a whole pound. :)

EDIT: Oh sorry, I thought you meant the expansions. The upgraded stuff is free and will apply to any version on PC. This is from the Steam blurb for the standard edition:

If you buy this game, you will receive a free next-gen update on December 14th!

Glad I bought it a couple of days ago, even though I have the disc version somewhere, that budget price was too good to resist.

Really looking forward to jumping back into the DLC. Good to hear it's decent jumping back in point

I also reckon Hearts of Stone is much easier than Blood and Wine. I found Blood and Wine quite difficult, with some nasty spikes.

Good to hear as well, will be helpful to get back into the mechanics if its not tough

It had been £7 on the playstation store for as long as I can remember. I'd have bought it ages ago if I'd known about the cross-save thing. Please let me know how that works.

Still, victory for physical media as an option, got the GotY off amazon for £12.

Was it not the case that all the DLC for this game was completely free? I thought it was championed for its generosity.

Also yes, shout out to physical media! I’ve gone back to it for all things PlayStation & Nintendo and it’s just easier.

No, there was a lot of free stuff, but there was always the intention for two paid dlc parts.

Paid for, but they feature the best DLC of all time (Hearts of Stone) which features one of the all-time best game characters ever (and that's saying something because the characters in HoS are a series highlight); and Blood and Wine, is so cool visually and about 30 hours long, which is staggering for DLC.

Yeah, it’s semantics but they put out a load of free ‘DLC’ that came out shortly after launch and was a few side quests, outfits, armour sets and erm, some haircuts.

The expansions actually came out as physical discs with a couple of full decks of Gwent cards. They’re lovely things. Have tried to get my wife to have a game with me a few times but she just looks at me with a combination of bitterness, regret and contempt.

I assume details about how to use cross-console saves haven't been released yet as I can't find any information about it anywhere... 🤔

It'll be the same as cyberpunk i.e create / log in to gog account on both platforms and it will upload to the cloud your last manual save + auto save.
