The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

Fired this up on Xbox SX yesterday as I was curious as to my progress on the last plyathrough that I left about a year ago and oh man, the music kicks in, the atmosphere, the scenery, everything, it's like coming home. Nothing else like it in gaming (....except maybe Skyrim).

I'm going to start again aren't I?

Not a huge amount revealed there. 4K/60 and RT modes of course, photo mode and some 'improved gameplay'. All looks very nice and for a free update on a nearly 8 year old game, can't complain. Any excuse to play it again and this will likely be the best the console versions will ever be so yeah, roll on 14th.

I've watched the rest of the presentation now. They've actually lifted a few QOL features from a number of PC mods, like the quick casting and the the UI/Map cleanup, subtitles scaling, etc. If I'm understanding him correctly they've actually integrated the HD textures rework mod as well, on top of mesh fixes.

This is what you'd want Bethesda to do with a Skyrim Anniversary Edition. Scour the Nexus for the inobtrusive mods/fixes with millions of downloads and just fucking get them in there.

I'm a 1440p kinda guy. Still looking forward to giving it a go and I'm a sucker for a good bit of fiddling and optimisation anyway.

I'd be amazed if your 3070 doesn't run the thing perfectly well at 1440p. It'll be lovely.

Jesus I can't play through the whole thing again?!

Got no time for this bullshit.

Stop treating us so well!

I'm feeling like this, I have played it 3 times now I think and basically just lived in this game for a couple of years of my life surely :D It is probably my all time top game still, the story is grand, the gameplay is good fun, the world is so alive and it still looks fantastic today.

I know I am going to end up playing this again and I have a fair few new games to play at the moment, the question is will this push the others out.

I gotten my hands on a Steam Deck today and I notice that The Witcher 3 is down to £4.99 on Steam. Which is the best handheld way to play this on the Deck, buying the Steam version, or streaming the Xbox version which I already own? I have no plans on playing away from home.

It's £6.99 for the GOTY Edition with all the DLC too.

I already own the GOG version, but I'm thinking of double dipping just for the Steam Deck.

Yes, I spotted that after I posted. I’ve only completed the main quest on Xbox, not touched the DLC yet. If I get the Steam  GOTY version, can I jump straight into the DLC without having to play any of the main game first?

As I recall, yes. You get an option at the start to jump straight to either DLC with an appropriately levelled character, so you could start with Hearts of Stone and the then continue to Blood and Wine.

I can't remember if your choices in the main game affect the DLC or not though.

Update has cross-save, could you not just pick up on Steam where you left off on XB?

I'm assuming it will work on historical saves, not just new ones? They said it works the same as Cyberpunk so maybe someone else can confirm.

Cheers, I'l check that out later.  It won't be the end of the world playing again in handheld if need be anyway.  I almost pulled the trigger on the Switch version for portability.
