Yeah, it's a nice "play" on that story from The Last Wish.

I've just started playing the game again and reached the palace in Vizima.  There's a book on the one of the shelves called 'The Last Wish' which is the plot of one of the episodes of the TV series, defo raised a smile.  I think watching the series is making me appreciate the game more, I'm certainly taking more time to read books etc. while I'm playing.

Yep! 'The Fall of Cintra' is another book you can happen upon on your travels, and it also matches the TV series - raised a smile from me. :)

Yeah, that's the one I always go for on my replays.

Spoiler

I don't think there's an ending where everyone comes out alright. If you do as the Crones ask, yes you can save the Baron's wife, and that stops the Baron from hanging himself, but you're dooming the children to being lunch for the crones. If you free the spirit you save the children, but the baron's wife dies and he subsequently hangs himself, plus the spirit wreaks havoc in Downwarren.

I think there's another variant on this as well...

Technically you can...

Spoiler

...go and free the spirit after getting Johnny his voice back but before talking to the Crones, which will save the children but stop Anna from being blamed for it.

Personally I think the spirit is too suspicious to set free, as potentially corroborated by the in-game book She Who Knows.

Took a break from this but have picked it up again to continue my journey. Very friendly in general to returning players after a break, and up to speed already. Mooching around in Novigrad looking for Junior Whoreson at the moment, and hoping to stay on this for a while as I have a little more time on my hands now. People at work talking about the series has me itching to get back in.

That's what I'm currently doing too.

Yes, as I've maybe mentioned before... I think I played this "wrong" during my first play-through by basically rushing it. I b-lined the main quest to get it done and that was a mistake. It was still good but the real vibe of the game is being The Witcher, a wandering nomad taking on monster hunting jobs and getting into mischief.

Taking it slow and indulging in the diversions is the proper way to play it, and the right pace. It's a slow burn with a huge world to drink into.

that's exactly how I'm playing it now on the switch... actually walking through Novigrad rather than bolting everywhere and looking for fast travel.  Some of the citizens random background chat can be really funny.

If you let the spirit go you are condemning the surrounding villages and lands. There is really no great solution to this.

The entire questline (and how it spreads to other areas of the game like folkore and human drama) is simply without equal in videogames.

Oh, I'm not disputing it's a perfectly acceptable artistic choice from the devs, I just can't stand it and am glad I can change it on the PC version. Seeing as there was a mod already available for this, I'm clearly not the only player who feels this way. :)

Oh you were the only one.

It's just that no-one else could stomach any more of your moaning about it ;) .

I did the palio horse racing quest last night, it's the first time I've been properly annoyed with the game. I couldn't see where I was going, and it was an instant mission fail if you deviated slightly from the correct line. One time it spawned me on the sea bed <_<

Oh you really should, its beeeyootiful.

You've still got Toussaint (with or without purple skies :D) to look forward to later in the game.

I know what you mean though, I remember waiting something like 100 hours in Skyrim before I went to Solitude because I didn't want that 'no more new areas' feeling

Oh, the purple as it changes to night is beautiful, it's the bloody daytime sky that did my head in. ;)

Finally decided to go to Skellige (or Space Norway), really just for a change of scenery as I'm no rush... I'm playing it like I'm Cain from Kung Fu - cuttin aboot, rocking up into town and seeing what's happening and heading off on wee adventures.  I usually manage a self contained quest end to end on a single train journey.  Like wee telly episodes.  Great stuff.

I got to Skellige when I last played on PS4 but I was just mainlining the story and not really stopping to take it in properly.  It's very very nice.
