The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

All done. A fitting farewell to an absolutely wonderful experience. 200 or so wonderful hours over a couple of months where I've played literally nothing else and I was actually quite downhearted after the main game credits rolled; I was surprised with just how involved I was with the main quest. The fact it took me so long really added to the 'end of an epic' feel in a way I'm struggling to articulate. I guess whatever the good or bad of the ending (though I believe I got the 'good' ending) these characters and their relationships were changed forever.

Hearts of Stone I enjoyed with a fantastic main quest and a nicely shaded main character in Von Everec. Some great moments including the laugh-out-loud Possession questline that I really got into the spirit of; enjoying a chance to play out of character was a joy. That said, the shoehorned in romance really put me out of the game, albeit temporarily. I'd professed my love and faithfulness in the main game; don't undermine my choices please. A puzzling misstep.

Which just left me with Blood and Wine and a goodbye to Geralt and the gang. Another wonderful little tale that you could feel CD Projekt Red enjoyed creating as much as I enjoyed experiencing. Playful nods, easter eggs and meta gags slotted right in and while it lacked some of the pathos of HoS it was an enjoyable yarn with some great subquests and characters. It was more Witcher, what could I really complain about?

It's going to feel odd for a while not clicking the Switch on and roaming this world; in all honestly I'm not sure I'll ever return. Perhaps, like I imagine Geralt himself doing, every so often I'll pop the wine glass down, say a cheerful cheerio to the missus and follow my senses to that funny roar or column of smoke and check I've still got it.

(And yup, dropped to Story Mode for him. Fuck that.)

Got to the end baddie after the beanstalk and can't beat the bugger when he transforms.

Me too. This afternoon. Exactly that.

One of my favourite games ever but never quite finished Blood and Wine. Came back to it last week determined to finish it but that boss nearly put me off for good. Really seemed to underline how clunky the controls can be at times, or maybe I was just out of practice.

Still, dropped to story mode and dealt with it.

I can't stop playing this... yes, the switch version isn't all singing and dancing 4k ultra beautiful - but it's the perfect system for a time sink like this.  Doing side quests on the train.  I'm massively OP now having stayed in Velen.  Ciri can handle herself for the time being, I've got to become the greatest Gwent player and bare knuckle figher on the continent.

On my current playthrough on PC I'm at the making preparations point of the main quest, so while they're all laying about in Dandelion's pub, I've been off to do the Hearts of Stone DLC. Which has been great, but I completely forgot Vlodimir shaves off Geralt's beard ... the absolute fucking twat!

I beat Dettlaff in the end. Embarrassingly I was already on Story Mode.

I watched a YouTube vid in the end and found that I've played and finished the main story and nearly done the DLC without knowing I could sidestep.

I've been rolling all over the shop when fighting.

Just picked these up from a chap down the road after a random search on Facebook marketplace. I'd given up ever finding these for a reasonable price but thought I'd give it one last try and boom, he'd only listed them 14 minutes earlier. £40, in perfect nick! Result. Game codes are used but whatever.

Ha! So, after about 70 hours I’ve got to the quest to stage a play to attract Dudu. And the plot of the play is episode 4 of the TV programme. Nice one

I'm sure you've seen it mentioned in the TV thread that episode 4 is also the intro sequence to the first game. Fun additional fact: towards the end of the first game there is a quest that is a direct follow-up to that story. So that bit in 3 works as a fun callback to both the books and the first game. Hopefully they'll get around to remaking that first game now that they've renegotiated the rights with the writer :)

Just hit level 10 at around 20hrs.  I mention it because there was talk earlier about level 11 at 35hrs+.  So thought it'd be useful as a point of comparison.

Friendly request - some of the talk here is a bit spoilery.  I know we're talking about a game several years, but some of us have just started; spoiler tags please :D

Eeehh, while I do understand, the game has been out for nearly 5 years now. If it were me playing this for the first time, and knowing how long it's been out, I'd be avoiding the thread until I'd finished it unless I needed some help with something.

Saying that, some things you genuinely never want spoiled, for anyone, and that goes for loads of games (and indeed films). It's a tough one.

As for your comment on play time. I'm playing on PC again via GOG, which tracks how many hours I've played - 80 hours and I'm level 35.

I think it comes down to how much of the main quest Vs side quests you've done as the variance in awarded XP is huge. Some only award about 2xp!

My PS4 save had me at lvl 48 after 194 hours and I spent a huge amount of time dicking about finding question marks on Skellige. Some might say there was too many of those fuckers.

If you out-level a quest – indicated by its name turning grey in your log – it'll give you a pittance of XP upon completion. As such you really need to pay attention to the recommended level if you want to progress efficiently, which really hurts the game in my opinion: it pushes you down a fairly specific path which doesn't feel that well paced as you're 'stuck' in each locale for hours on end, despite the world ostensibly being open.

I'd like the next Witcher game, whenever it appears, to ditch levels entirely. Feels like all the pieces are in place for a more interesting progression system, e.g. have certain monsters be next to impossible to defeat until you've crafted the correct oils, or other gear gates a bit like the Eye of Nehelani in Wild Hunt. You could still have a skill tree, just have the points for it purely unlocked via Places of Power, or hidden stashes of witcher concoctions, to encourage exploration.

Sounds great. It was always a *bit* annoying and unnatural that if I stumbled upon a creature or gang too powerful for me to take on that was it; I would literally have no chance of victory. I looked it up because it seemed a bit at odds with the freeform nature of the game and found I needed to be within 6 levels of a creature for it to lose the skull icon and for me to be able to actually damage it.

Don't get me wrong, I love finding stuff I shouldn't or stumbling upon enemies far too strong for me, but at least give me a *chance* to beat them against the odds.

The first Witcher is frequently discounted to almost nothing on GOG. They gave it away free as part of a promotion at one point iirc. It'll run on anything, it's a very old game.

I would really like a remake of W1 with 2 and 3 remastered, released as The Witcher Trilogy on next-gen consoles .

btw - is there any logical order to the completed quest logs... some of the write ups are pretty entertaining and I quite enjoy reading them.  I remember doing the one with the ghost woman on in the tower in the island and thinking I'd done the right thing but upon reading the completion notes, realised I'd doomed the nearby village to certain death. :(

But... as I get more and more completed quests, it gets much harder to find them... there doesn't seem to be any logical ordering of them and as I do more and more, it gets hard to find them... particularly if I can't quite remember the name of the quest I've just done.
