I bought this on release for the PS4, but have never got round to playing it (shame on me!). I have the second game on the Xbox (which I’ve also never played...), is it worthwhile playing through the second game first? Will I miss much in terms of a backstory by jumping straight into 3?

I’d never played a Witcher game before but people in this thread assured me it wasn’t an issue. You pick up a lot of back story in the game. There are also YouTube videos you can watch to fill you in as well. They are linked in this thread. Can’t recall the page though.

I'd say yes and no. Though overall the answer is no. My brother hadn't played any of the previous games and absolutely loved this game.

The Witcher 2 is a fantastic game so if you already own it and you have enough time for both games then you could do worse than to play it. If you play 3 first going back to 2 won't be so appealing though because 3 really improves pretty much everything.

 Without a doubt. It's an amazing rpg and easily one of the best written games you will likely play in your life.

There’s an argument for playing the first DLC during the main quest (and the game accounts for this really nicely), but personally I think they work better afterwards...not least because they’re fucking hard ;)

I've started Blood & Wine finally! I appreciate the option to start it seprate from your main game, I played and finished the game and the first DLC back when it was released but it feels nice to start with a fresh inventory for this.

Playing the dlc during the main quest is a really bad choice imo. Their level of writing, characters, emotional depth and general quest design will just completely suck the air out of the main quest, which works amazingly well if, after it's major "no coming back point", the player keeps up with its built up instead of taking long  breaks.

Picked this up again after finishing some other long games, and now I've remembered how to do everything, I'm chugging along.

 

Just one question. I'm following the main story quests and doing the Ciri chasing quests. I'm only level 4 and currently in Velen about to go off hunting a witch. I thought I'd have a bit of an explore, but everything is in red and a much higher level than me. Am I better just pressing on with the main quest and then exploring later on?

In the menu check your quest list. You can see the recommended level of your active quests there. I ran into a lot of quests early on that were way too high for me as well. Recommend to pick up quests where you can but plough on with the story for now. If at any point you feel underlevelled use the map to travel back to the zone where you started the game, there are a whole bunch of sidequests there too.

Coincidence, after having this sitting on my hard drive for over a year (!) I finally got bored enough to start it the other night.  So far done what I imagine is just the tutorial bit (hunt and kill the griffin) and met Yennifer.

Yar. Beckham kicked my ass a few times for sure. Not as difficult as say Ninja Gaiden, but the main game doesn't prep you for how tough some of the DLC is.

Sounds like a plan. It just seems every new location I find, the mobs are too high level. Doing the main quest then shooting back to explore sounds like a plan. I can see a lot of the quests I have are higher level, was obviously leaving those as well. Cheers for the advice

Main quests are the one who give you the experience to move on. Side quests give you very little experience. 

 

Set level scaling on. That way you can do the main quest and explore whenever you like without worrying of outlevelling the side quests. Do each main story on its appropriate level more or less, get enough xp and tackle the various side quests. Many of them you won't get to do until much, much later on. Just let it come naturally as you play and explore.

Will check that setting later. Only in Velen at the moment and just found some locations with easy enough things to do, so I was probably just wandering too far afield. Plus I've not remembered how to play the bloody thing. Will concentrate on this game now looking forward, but Gwent can bugger off

As someone who loves card and boardgames, I made it my mission to figure it out and am now completely obsessed with it on my first playthrough. To the extent that I'm now annoyed when I meet a new trader and I don't even get the option to ask them for a game. 'Can you even play Gwent, bro?'.

 

@Vorgot I've just started playing it recently myself and definitely had the same issue starting out. Ran into way too many tough mobs etc. But I stuck with the story missions and now have an abundance of choice when it comes to missions at or around my level. So keep at it!
