I've got the email now, and now I'm not sure I even want one

Is the 3D a lot better then? And are the screens much smaller than the 3DS XL? And what's a reasonable price to ask for a mint 3DS XL?

Unless you really want the ambassador plates, why not wait until there's a reason to buy it? Until Xenoblade happens, there's no reason at all to own one of these if you have a 3DS already aside from the limited edition covers this one comes with.

There are definitely reasons to get one now. The 3D is better, you'll get a better resale on a current 3DS and the C-stick is useful if you play any games that use it. Monster Hunter 4 is out pretty soon, so that'll be the first game it might be worth getting one for, although weirdly I've found it's the extra shoulder buttons which make that game play better rather than the second stick.

I'm not going to argue that the new one isn't better, because of course it will be. But if you have a 3DS already it's not better enough to warrant the purchase until there's a game that truly needs it. If MH4 is that game then fair enough.

Any extra resale value you'd get on a 3DS is offset by the premium that this is selling for right now, which is probably £30 over what it'll sell for when it's actually out, before you even look at bundles, etc.

You're giving your opinion as if it's a fact and clearly other people disagree.

Well it kind of is a fact. There are currently zero games which require you to upgrade from the current 3DS model so there's no reason to upgrade it beyond "I want something new." There are improvements in the new model, of course, but that still doesn't change the fact that nobody needs one yet. If you think the better 3D effect alone is worth £180 then that's okay but, well, it's pretty hard to argue that.

The only reason to spend £180 on one today is if you really need the limited edition cover. But that's okay.

I don't think I'm being particularly controversial or anything!

You don't actually need anything related to games. Chuck it all in a bin.

I think the upgrade is worth it just for the improved 3D. I used to have it turned off all the time due to the ghosting and flickering whenever I moved a centimetre, but now I can't see me not having it switched on. It's that good!

I restarted Fire Emblem: Awakening last night. What an incredibly polished game that is. Advance Wars 3DS now please.

This. I've never owned a 3DS before my lovely N3DS, and despite hearing that many people play with the 3D off, I can't imagine ever playing without it on my N3DS. It's just lovely and perfect, and constantly amazes me. Scenes in Layton Miracle Mask are beautiful, SM3DL speaks for itself, and the little battle dioramas in FE: Awakening are utterly charming, and tactically easier to navigate in mint 3D. And I'll be starting on Luigi's Mansion 2 next week, which looks like the ideal 3D setting.

Now that to me is worth the trade-up price for anyone who wants to play in 3D but doesn't love its implementation on the old 3DS. Now it just works, and works incredibly well. YMMV, natch.

I haven't had the email but even if I did I'm not interested at the moment. I don't like the visuals on it, I'd much rather have an XL size and this time I'm planning to wait until there's a really nice design I want.

Also I have to pay for a car service, insurance, mot and tax all in the next month. :(
