Nintendo 3DS

Need some advice from you lot. I'm off abroad for 5 months, so am stocking up on games for my 3DS to keep me occupied with. I've got every 3DS game I want, but want to get some original DS games to take too.

So apart from the obvious first party Nintendo games, what DS games should I pick up? They should be easy to get a hold of from eBay/Cex an the like and not ridiculously rare/expensive.

Absolutely the best games on the system (including 1st party) are Ouendan (and Elite Beat Agentns and Ouendan 2), the Phoenix Wright games and Ghost Trick, and as an added bonus all of them will last you a good while.

Ouendan et al. will take you an age to master (assuming you enjoy rhythm action games), while the Phoenix Wrights and Ghost Trick will give you wonderfully written mysteries to solve.

Unfortunately they're not the cheapest DS games - expect the Ouendan games to cost between £15 and £20 on ebay, the Phoenix Wrights between £10 and £20. Elite Beat Agents routinely goes for a fiver at least, as it was actually released over here, and is the least well regarded of the Ouendan games [mostly due to the musical selection being recognisable to us, and thus recognisably cheap cover versions)].

Adventure Time : Hey Ice King. Can be got for a fiver on Amazon and the DS version has very little difference to the 3DS one. It's short, but brilliant. A hark back to Zelda 2 and full of Adventure time mathematical goodness

I might be wrong here but will Ouendan work on a UK 3DS? I didn't think it was released in PAL territories and thought that my copy refused to work on my 3DS.

Yeah, DS games were never designed to be region locked so there's no way for the 3DS to know what region they're from. Evidence: my Japanese copies of Ouendan 1 & 2 (and Phoenix Wright 1 and Daigassou! Band Brothers) all work perfectly on my UK 3DS, as do my American DS games, which make up the majority of my DS games (as the narrow, black-spined US and Japanese boxes are much nicer than the fat white-spined European ones). If your 3DS can't run your copy of Ouendan, there's something else up!

The only region locked games I know of are the DSi enhanced Pokemon Soul Silver / Heart Gold and Pokemon Conquest. The region locking only applies on the DSi though, you can play them on a DS Lite and any 3DS system without any problem at all.

Castlevania: Subtitle of choice, Chrono Trigger, Kirby Superstar Ultra, The World Ends With You, Advance Wars and whatever RPGs look good to you.

DQIX and the remakes of the earlier titles if you like JRPGs. Totally agree with the PW and Ghost Trick recommendations, but I think Ghost Trick was remade for iOS if you're taking an iThing as well - may be an easier purchase.

Ah, looks like Ch 1 and 2 are free on iTunes, and it's 6.99 to unlock the whole game, so you can try before you buy. Lovely game. PANIC DANCE!

There's a Disgaea DS if you want a real time-sink and like SRPGs, although I've not played it m'self.

I loved Disgaea DS. I probably played it for over 100 hours and still didn't finish it. I'd played it on PS2 before but the convenience of the bottom screen's 2D map made navigating stages with a lot of elevation much easier. Brilliant game. I should probably get back into it, or one of the sequels.

Like I said, time-sink!

Although people were said to have put 1000s of hours into 'completing' the PS2 version.

I keep buying them, but not getting around to starting them (that trend started with LaPucelle on PS2). One for the "Do you buy games because you think you "should'" thread.

Finished off Zelda (which was great) and will now start on BD.

I'll be interested to see how you get on with it. I loved it for twenty odd hours then became bored very, very suddenly for some reason.

And Zelda is great, yes.

Can't remember if it was in this thread or the eShop one, but those (deKay) that didn't understand what I was saying/said I was wrong - the £5 vouchers you get from Wii U do also count towards the 3DS' eShop:
