Unlike Catherine there's no time limit, enemies chasing you or drops that can kill you in the Blox games and you even have unlimited rewind if you make a mistake instead of having to start the level again.

Thanks for the replies, folks. I'll have a look at a few vids. Would everyone else recommend Pullblox over the sequel as a better place to start?

I played quite a bit of Pullblox but got stuck later on. The sequel looks exponentially harder so I've never bothered with it.

As somebody who's not played Layton, bar a brief dalliance with the first before getting bored of the puzzles, could you give a bit more of a description of what you mean by 'nastiness'? I was planning to give WvL a go at some point but I'd like to be forewarned.

WvL is a lot better than the mask in that respect, but there's a little too much.... "1850s attitudes" in the thing.

If you're not going to play Mask here's a spoiler

So, the plot revolves around a mysterious stranger terrorising a town. In flashback we're told the story of a young Layton and his best friend cuntflap in search of the mysterious mask. Of course ultimately the friend is killed in the attempt.

Back in the town it turns out the friend's old servant is in charge, married to his friends old girlfriend.

Of course the mysterious stranger is cuntflap.

So after some "plot" not only are they all reconciled and everything's fine, the servant reveals it was just a show marriage in the first place and basically "hands over" his wife to his old master who he'd basically been waiting for all these years. He also hands over the entire town he'd spent his life building for no reason whatsoever. Everyone forgives everyone, the servant pretty much just fucks off and is ignored.

I may be overreacting but that last paragraph basically turned me off Layton's universe forever, it's just horrible and comes very, very dangerously close to endorsing slavery.

Now WvL has nothing on this level even slightly but it's certainly not immune to it and does involve literal slavery without anyone so much as remarking on it.

Man, Pullblox has properly taken hold of my brain. Every time I click on anything vaguely quadrilateral I expect it to slide out towards me one space.

What a great game. So glad I purchased. Thanks for the recommendation guys

Same here, picked it up in the sale yesterday! Really clever stuff.

I thought I might have been done with the 3DS after Pokemon last month, but then Mario Golf, NSMB2, Pullblox and Attack of the Friday Monsters somehow found themselves onto my home screen and I've had a half term of gaming heaven.

Someone needs to help me. While I love Picross, got the DS and the e version, I had some credit on the 3DS and ended up with e2, e3 and e4. And I insist they all sit of my front home screen. I think I have a problem.

Crikey, they turn things up a notch when you get to the three star puzzles on Pushblox. I keep squinting at the screen, willing my brain to figure it out. I might go a bit scanners.gif in a minute. The sense of satisfaction when you finally figure it out, though  Feels good man.

I've got an itch to reat myself to a bit of low price/VC/eShop exclusive fun. Something with a bit of length would be handy (something I can meander through)

Got Pullblox, SteamWorld, Pocket Club Football, Denpa Men, Picross e2 & e3 and Cave Story.

I see Batman: Blackgate is on offer - worth a punt?

Theatrhythm 2 is available for pre-order on Amazon now. It's a bit premature but it's one of my most eagerly-awaited games:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Theatrhythm-Final-Fantasy-Curtain-Call/dp/B00K5K4JQG/ref=sr_1_2?s=videogames&ie=UTF8&qid=1401832480&sr=1-2&keywords=theatrhythm

Is this the one that's got all the content from the first game included as well? And it's a budget price release?

Picross e4? :)

That'll do nicely. I've just finished Link Between Worlds and pop back into Ocarina from time to time, so more puzzling goodness will do between Monster Hunter sessions.

Oh, and Monster Hunter is absolutely brilliant. It's taken /months/ for it to click with me but now it's really got me hooked.

It's a shame they don't use more in-game footage, but this might be the game with which I (finally) start my Monster Hunter adventure.

Oof. Denpa Men 3 is the only worthwhile Denpa, and completely charming.

Absolutely. The 2nd one wasn't too bad, but it's the third instalment that really shines. They finally made the game into something that (almost) rivals retail releases.

Ooh, that looks lovely. Glad there's a while before it comes out, I can see MH3 taking over for a while yet. And Online, too! Hurrah!

I'll give Denpa Men 3 a go too. I should've clarified that I have the 2nd game, not the first, but I've barely played it beyond the opening tutorial. I got squashed almost immediately after leaving town for the first time and I've been too nervous to go back.

I think the only action one can take in this situation, by virtue of being right and true, is to commit seppuku. Go to your Mii plaza, start that Iwata vs. Reggie E3 video, and do the deed. You have attained that state of not-being; that state of nothingness know as mu.
