Nintendo 3DS

Didn't someone say that the 3DS wasn't powerful enough to run a GBA emulator? Or rather, it could, but without the 3DS over the top? The ambassador games can't run StreetPass at the same time and don't support multiplayer and so on.

Nintendo want to be able to run VC games in their own emulator to have them run natively in the environment of the host platform. So the way they did the ambassador games was hack them to run in the DS mode but they don't like to do that, it's all or nothing with them.

So yeah... Wii U only.

Neither did the NES games at first, remember. I very much doubt the 3DS would struggle with what you suggest if they actually tried.

Right then, an update.

I bought an original 3DS with the Ambassador games installed (but without a linked NNID) from the forums very own MikeBeaver (cheers Mike) and received it today.

As stated by deKay and SuperCraig the way to do this is with two transfers. This makes sense as ultimately I want to end up with my 3DS XL as it was before the transfer, with my Mii, settings, streetpass data, save games etc. and with my downloaded titles intact. With the addition of the Ambassador titles and anything else on the Ambassador machine (Mikes' machine also had Zelda Four Swords and 3D Excitebike :D ).

So, I've done the initial transfer from my XL (which has my NNID linked to it) to the original Ambassador 3DS. All of my original downloads (including 3DS, 3D Classics, DSiWare and VC games) are there (plus saves) together with my Mii, settings, street plaza stuff, eShop balance etc. All I had to do then was to go into the eShop download history where I was able to redownload the Ambassador titles, Zelda Four Swords and 3D Excitebike.

I didn't realise that the DSiWare stuff is actually stored in the system memory and not the SD card so, as part of the system transfer, it copies the DSiWare titles to the SD Card and then copies them back from the SD Card to the system memory on the target system when you move the SD Card over.

As SuperCraig says, I think it's important that the Ambassador machine does not have an NNID linked. Still not clear if the titles then end up locked to the machine PLUS the NNID or not. It may be OK if you unlink (not delete) the NNID from the original Ambassador machine and then transfer but that's for someone else to have a bash at, if needed.

Anyway, I now need to wait 7 days until I can transfer the whole lot back onto the 3DS XL (was hoping that this limit had been removed when they removed the limit on number of transfers but it still applies). Next Friday I'll confirm if all is in order after the second transfer but I'm not expecting any issues. I think the trickiest bit with potential for loss is done.

Although I do feel like a goal hanger only getting a 3DS this year but still getting the Ambassador titles. :P

Quick update.

It's done. I had to wait the full 7 days until I could transfer back but I did the system transfer, moved my SD Card back over and all was fine, I have all of my original games plus the Ambassador games and the other games that were originally on the source machine. Hurrah!

One thing worth mentioning is that on the original transfer to the Ambassador machine I got an error when trying to redownload the Ambassador titles until I rebooted the 3DS. Worth noting as at the time I was a bit concerned that I'd wasted my time (and money). After the reboot they all downloaded fine.

So, it works fine as long as the Ambassador machine doesn't have a linked NNID.

I'm not buying anything via the eshop because of that nightmarish post by hugh. Wtf is going on there? How is that even allowed?

What happened to Nintendo being for Kids? I can't make heads nor tails of what's going on on my 3DS. I've got an eshop account, I've linked a Club Nintendo ID and now they want me to make an NNID? What does that mean for friend cards or whatever?

I don't understand any of it. I just put carts into the device and press play and try to forget the convoluted mess that appears should I foolishly press the home button. My Vita and PSN account are completely different and I'm willing to invest money in their store because I know all my games aren't going to be suddenly vaporised.

Yeah, but it's shit.

Uh, world conquerer I mean

Yeah I downloaded the demo and it looked like Risk and I thought it might play like Advance Wars. I didn't get very far even though I read the tutorial but wasn't sure if I was missing something or it was just that bad.

Buy game on eShop.

Play game.

I'm not really sure why you find that difficult? Surely you can manage that on other consoles?

There are some caveats which include price & availability plus the general confusion regarding transfers like hughsieman - although he was doing something particularly 'rare'. Agree though - eShop in general is great.
