Nintendo 3DS

WELL DONE NINTENDO ON MAKING THIS ALL SO SIMPLE.

Indeed. The shambles of all of this is well documented and commented upon but it's still always worth repeating.

I have a Wii but no WiiU. When I was setting up my 3DS XL I ended up with an eShop account and also a Club Nintendo account (I hadn't bothered before). I was then invited to create a Nintendo Network ID last week with no explanation of what this provides and the differences/benefits compared with what I already have. The only reason I set it up and linked it to the 3DS XL was because they are giving away a download code for Super Mario Bros DX and I like to make sure that if there's free stuff going then I'm in.

Honestly, it's hard to understand how all of this bollocks came about. Other than different areas and departments within Nintendo just doing as they please with no management or coordination from above.

Saying that, I suppose with an accounts based system life would be a million times easier but I wouldn't be able to do what I'm (hopefully) going to do here which is to combine the downloads/accounts from two systems.

It looks like you'd have to transfer on to the system with the ambassador games to merge everything and then transfer back to your original system. And if the system with ambassador games has a Nintendo Network ID on it already then you're fucked.

I'm thinking of getting a DS so I can play gems with my nephew on it who lives in America. Should I get a 3DS, an XL or a 2DS and what should I be paying for it?

I recommend 3DS XL. You can probably get them for about about 130-140 pounds.

Early adopters were given 10 NES games and 10 GBA games as compensation when Nintendo cut the price fairly quickly after launch. You can buy all the NES games on the eShop, but Nintendo said that the GBA games will never be available again.

eShop downloads are tied to the device, which normally would be shit. In this case though, you could acquire a second hand console with the ambassador games and do a system transfer to get them onto your main console.

I want to do what you're attempting, hughsieman. So if anyone knows for sure that it does still work these days, link ahoy!

Right then, an update.

I bought an original 3DS with the Ambassador games installed (but without a linked NNID) from the forums very own MikeBeaver (cheers Mike) and received it today.

As stated by deKay and SuperCraig the way to do this is with two transfers. This makes sense as ultimately I want to end up with my 3DS XL as it was before the transfer, with my Mii, settings, streetpass data, save games etc. and with my downloaded titles intact. With the addition of the Ambassador titles and anything else on the Ambassador machine (Mikes' machine also had Zelda Four Swords and 3D Excitebike :D ).

So, I've done the initial transfer from my XL (which has my NNID linked to it) to the original Ambassador 3DS. All of my original downloads (including 3DS, 3D Classics, DSiWare and VC games) are there (plus saves) together with my Mii, settings, street plaza stuff, eShop balance etc. All I had to do then was to go into the eShop download history where I was able to redownload the Ambassador titles, Zelda Four Swords and 3D Excitebike.

I didn't realise that the DSiWare stuff is actually stored in the system memory and not the SD card so, as part of the system transfer, it copies the DSiWare titles to the SD Card and then copies them back from the SD Card to the system memory on the target system when you move the SD Card over.

As SuperCraig says, I think it's important that the Ambassador machine does not have an NNID linked. Still not clear if the titles then end up locked to the machine PLUS the NNID or not. It may be OK if you unlink (not delete) the NNID from the original Ambassador machine and then transfer but that's for someone else to have a bash at, if needed.

Anyway, I now need to wait 7 days until I can transfer the whole lot back onto the 3DS XL (was hoping that this limit had been removed when they removed the limit on number of transfers but it still applies). Next Friday I'll confirm if all is in order after the second transfer but I'm not expecting any issues. I think the trickiest bit with potential for loss is done.

Although I do feel like a goal hanger only getting a 3DS this year but still getting the Ambassador titles. :P

Hmm thats a shame. I don't think I downloaded four swords. Isn't that just what came on the Link to the Past GBA cartridge? Never did play it.

Think I only played one level of the gamecube one as well. That was kinda like the wii u actually, with the GBA link up.. i didn't actually enjoy it much then switching between screens even though it was kinda neat for the first play.

So, they reckon that the Ambassador GBA games won't be coming to the eShop for purchase and it also looks like no other GBA games will be appearing either, is that right? If any were coming I'd have thought that they would have appeared before now. Shame if it is as there's a good few I would pay for. I was hoping for Wario Ware Twisted (if the gyro or whatever in the 3DS was up to it) as I've never played it. What are the chances of SNES games as well?

It's been stated before but if they are set on drip feeding instead of putting loads up at once then there should be a constant stream of VC stuff. Over two years into the life of the 3DS and still no Super Mario World available in any form is pitiful.

Nintendo have seriously fucked up the eshop. As others have said why drip feed us games ? Do they not want people's money ? Have a proper store filled with all their games. Why not release snes or gba games on the eshop ? Do they not want people's money ? ( easy money at that!)

Yeah, as consumers ideally the whole lot would be up and we could pick and choose what we wanted to buy when we wanted it. But I can see what they achieve with the trickle of games and that is that each game or couple of games gets a bit of attention for a week or two and I'd imagine that there are some purchases of games that happen but would have gone to other games that people want more. Obviously, then, the other games that people wanted eventually get released and bought as well. I think this is a bit different than, say, music.

What I don't understand is the pace of releases. Even on the Wii (which was still slow going on the VC releases) most things you would have expected were released over a couple of years. But with the 3DS it's painful. There should be two or three VC releases (as well as the other stuff) across a couple of platforms every week. One high or semi high profile title (a Mario or something) and a couple of others.

Often what we want as gamers can be at odds with what a company wants to do to maximise profit but it's hard to see how this situation helps anyone.

Thing with the drip feed of vc games.. I can't be bothered to check news websites to see what vc games have been released. I just would like to get onto the eshop and download what I want without constantly logging on and seeing what's become available.

Also lttp on the gba is quite good but much trickier as you don't see the entire screen - makes some dungeons harder than they should be - a bit like sonic 2 on the game gear.
