I've had the "error has occurred" message and shutdown happen three times in the last month (this one, I think). Does anyone know if this is a software error or if the hardware is faulty? It's been happening during Zelda, which is annoying.

Error 403 Sorry

Thinking of getting my kid a 3DS/XL/2DS for his birthday at the end of March. He'll be turning 6, enjoys stuff like the Lego games, racers, Skylanders etc and he's getting good at reading now as well. What are the top "family friendly" games I should be considering? Presumably Mario, Mariokart and...?

Animal Crossing!

Oh boy. I want to introduce my partner to the games, but have yet to rebuy the first DS game - this would allow me to instead have a single copy for all of them. Just have to pray for a UK release (digital or otherwise)...

The iOS ports are really bad, the graphics are blown up from the GBA original with a smoothing filter and are missing half the animations. It's like a Flash remake made by a guy who had the original game described to him over a bad phone line. Avoid.

I think in portrait mode it mimics having two smaller screens, no idea how landscape works.

Oh man, even that recent "HD" version they put out? I thought they'd improved them a lot since the original iOS versions.

The original was in portrait and mimiced two screen. But The Ace Attourney HD trilogy is in landscape as does a pretty good job of flipping between screens. It;s fine in terms of how it looks ( you can play the first two cases from the first game free, i think). And at £11 for the whole lots its pretty good value. Of course if they don't have an iDevice then wai tfor the re-release if it makes it over.

As has already been said, Fire Emblem and Phoenix Wright are both brilliant, best games on the system by far - assuming you enjoy strategy RPGs and Phoenix Wright games*, respectively.

Castlevania is surprisingly nice too - a 2D entry into the series closer to the Super Castlevanias than the later affairs.

Once you've got through those, the smaller games on the eShop are worth a look - the Sega 3D Classics are particularly tasty if you like your arcade games, for example.

*which sounds like useless advice if you've not already played a Phoenix Wright game, but if you've not already played a Phoenix Wright game then you really ought to get a copy of the first DS game and play that first - both to see if you like the games, and if so to start you on the way through the series because the 3DS game definitely benefits from playing the earlier games first.

I thought Pilot Wings was pretty poor really. Uninteresting environment, only one island, time restricted free flight mode, short. As a launch title it was OK, but considering the library that's available now it wouldn't be on my shortlist for a new 3DS owner.

My first selection would probably be:

- Fire Emblem

- Phoenix Wright

- Pullblox

- Link Between Worlds (depending on the reason why you don't like Zelda; if it's for all the fluff and handholding and backtracking etc. you might like this anyway)

- Castlevania

- Ghost Recon Shadow Wars

- Luigi's 2

In order to satisfy my RPG craving, I'm returned to Fire Emblem on 3DS. What a game.

Anyway, since I'm playing it with perma-death, the whole 'recruiting' and renown stuff becomes more important. So, I lost a few good guys and I'm not quite strong enough to progress the story, so I've returned to the first island and now smacking wandering parties and risen all over the map.

Yep! The best Harvest Moon, I think. First month is ridiculously slow, then it starts to open up and there is a lot to it. I've sunk 85 hours into it and, while a massive Animal Crossing fan, Harvest Moon has taken over since buying it.

If you've played HM before, it's kind of a repetition game in terms of the farm/economy - but there's loads more to it than that.

The best Harvest Moon you say?! This I have to play... thanks!

Just about Ace Combat Legacy....

Never really a fan of Ace Combat, even though I've played 1 and 4 on PS/2.

But Legacy on 3DS is brilliant. Bite sized chunks of missions, loads of upgrades/unlockables.

You should all have it in your collection, really.
