Setting my phone up this way works for me to get nintendo zone content:

Have 3ds in sleep mode:

Set up a wifi network (phone one is good enough)
Change name to: "_The Cloud"
Set network to Unsecured/no security

Wait for 3DS to flash blue

Close wifi network

If you want to check out Nintendo zone app keep it open for the duration of use of the app

I didn't realise that you also had to use "system transfer" for your Nintendo ID. I traded in my 2DS towards a 3DS XL but I can't access my Nintendo Network ID because I have to do a system transfer.

What if my 2DS was broken beyond usable. My Nintendo ID would be locked away with a dead system?

Partly my fault I guess. I just assumed the transfer was for games you bought on the eShop/Virtual Console etc. I probably should have decided to trade it in last week before I linked my ID. :\

It did say pretty explicitly when you were setting it up that you would need to do a system transfer to put the account on a new machine ...

If your 2DS was broken, then you'd be able to send it to Nintendo who'd transfer it to a new machine. Bit of a faff.

Yeah I did lose a bit of patience when setting it up. Like I said my fault but still shit that you have to do a system transfer for something so small such as a Network ID.

What about stolen? My brother had his Vita stolen, he bought a new one and was able to get his account along with digital games he purchased back on it no problem.

I've emailed them but I'm just clutching at straws.

If your 3DS is lost or stolen, I guess you're sweet out of luck. You might be able to blag some download codes from Nintendo by using your account's download history as proof of purchase, but I don't know of a situation where that's happened yet.

I don't know about anyone else, but since the Streepass relay system has been implemented, I've found it far less compelling. It's no longer showing us people we've passed, but people who have been near the same hotspot recently, and apparently random contacts from around the country? I've barely had the same person twice since they implemented it. My streetpass allocation gets filled at least twice daily, so even if I did pass a genuine 3DS in the wild, it wouldn't pick it up! And if it did, I wouldn't even know it!

Admittedly, I'm quickly completing my puzzle swaps now, but I can't help but think they've only changed this system to encourage people to buy their plaza games. It's turned a cute thrill into a daily chore. :(

It has happened to at least two people in this very thread.

Turns out I can create another Nintendo Network ID using the same email address. That's a bit odd but I'll go with it. Contemplating changing my Wii U ID as well to keep them both the same.

Nintendo:

We recommend that you register the same ID to your Nintendo 3DS system that you've registered to your Wii U system. Having the same ID will allow you to combine your Nintendo eShop account balances from each device.
