Got mine today. I wrote a thing! (On another forum)

Welp, that's a 3DS XL bought today. I hope you're all pleased with yourselves. It's not an LE, though. It's a sleek black beast, dripping with professionalism and mild embarrassment of playing videogames as an adult. Obviously.

Ended up cracking because Argos is going a fantastic deal this weekend - £160 for the handheld, and both Professor Layton 3DS games. On top of that, You get a £10 off coupon as you spent over £100. Of course, I'm going to end up playing the Layton games for all of an hour, and then chuck them at Amazon Trade-In because both games come in at about £32 credit, and because I will become the embodiment of this legendary Penny Arcade comic:

KOUdmzu.jpg

The £10 coupon is going towards A Link Between Worlds, which is the main reason I wanted a 3DS. So, with a week to go, I ventured into the soon-to-be-defunct Blockbuster for some cheap games. Wasn't disappointed - Saw Super Street Fighter IV and Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars for a crisp fiver each, so I took them to the till. Turned out, they put another discount on top because it was the closing down sale, and both ended up coming to £5.96 or something ridiculous. Ridge Racer 3DS was sitting there, but it was at £8, so fuck that. Shadow Wars didn't come with a manual, though - I'm not sure if that's because Ubisoft are cheap bastards or because it simply became lost. Oh well.

Anyway, it's in sleep mode at the moment, downloading demo versions of Fire Emblem and Bravely Default at the moment. Bollocks to those eShop prices though, it seems like the only things worth the prices are going to be Indie Games, VC stuff and Phoenix Wright. I'll probably hold off on Phoenix Wright until I actually get around to finishing Justice For All.

Actually, you know what? I can't remember most of Ace Attourney anyway, I might as well thrash the whole series. DEEP JOY.

I then spent most of this afternoon playing Bravely Default. Because it's good. I also started Ghost Recon, which from the first mission was rather fun. Good times! I'm now downloading a bunch of other Demos, including Harmoknight and Phoenix Wright. With how generous the Bravely Default demo is, I should have more than enough until Zelda's out. :omg:

I'm guessing everyone else with a 3DS XL is used to that clicking hinge by now? I wouldn't be so concerned about it if it wasn't for the fact that it wobbles even when it's in position - it feels like I'm going to break the thing every time I open it, and I've only had it for about eight hours!

That feeling never goes away, hate that click of fear. What's scarier though is dropping a weighty object on the touchscreen, and then thinking for half an hour that the responsiveness was off. The next day it felt ok though, phew.

Are you sure sleep mode allows you to download stuff though? Mine connects to the streetpass, meaning it breaks the connection off. All my shop downloads have been leaving it on.

I recently splurged nearly all of 20 quid on the new Korg music synth sequencer. Its soo easy to use! Many years ago I tried some PC sequencers but found them really overwhelming, in that I couldnt even find where the actual sequencer was. With this you'll be creating loops in seconds! Excellent for having on you if you think of a tune, and then you can add more and more layers later on. Seems to be plenty o samples, and if you need different sounds you can continue your work on a pc by linking it somhow. I guess the sequence info can be transferred to compatible software.

Yours doesn't click?

It does it when I download something normally THEN put it into sleep mode, but when I queue items then go to sleep it won't download.

How do you mean click? I open it and then it clicks into place then it stays in that position unless I move it myself. It's not as stiff as my DS Lite but it doesn't move about or cause me any grief.

And I think deKay's answered your second point ;)

I picked one up from Argos yesterday, it was to good a deal to pass up. It was a joint Xmas pressie for me and the missus as she wanted the Prof Layton games.

Anyway j know what you mean about the hinge clicking, first time I opened it I thought I'd broken it! It's just the noise it makes, I wasn't expecting a click like that. Also I was surprised at how precise your head placement has to be for the 3D to work. Even just a few cm either way and you start getting blur and flickering/cross talk(?) and it also felt like I had to hold it slightly off centre to get it sharp, either that or my eyes are off centre...!

Absolutely loving Resi: Rev again. The graphics are still some of the best on the console I reckon, bar Kid Icarus

I've just finished this. A grin on my face the whole last chapter. Still not really taken with the whole FPS view but still a real thrill-ride. At times it really chugs and at other times its as smooth as butter but it always looks great. A real testament to what Capcom can pull out of hardware. Hope it get's a sequel.

Back to Monster Hunter now, which may be one of the best games i've ever played.

Now that I've finished Dual Destinies, time to get a new game. I have Kid Icarus too but that's not gelling with me, one for occasional play. My choices are:

Super Mario Land

Animal Crossing

Zelda

Pokemon

which one shall I get? Maybe Pokemon, I don't want to fall too behind so that no-one will be playing it when I finally build a strong enough team to do battle.

Mario 3D Land is superb, and whilst it looks like it is about to be surpassed by 3D World, if you don't have a Wii U then I would say it is essential.

Animal Crossing was incredible for a while, and you will still find a wealth of things to do, but be aware that the buzz has died down a little and some of the shine will be missing as a result. Your entire friends list are no longer playing it as they were in the first 2 months.

Zelda ... is Zelda. You already know if you want it.

Pokemon is the best one in the franchise. But, I wouldn't worry too much about falling behind, because it's Pokemon and people tend to play it for years! Also, the Pokemon Bank isn't out until December, and there will be a secondary surge of interest at that time.

I would add Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate to the consideration pile. Incredible depth, astonishing breadth, it's a game so good that I (along with many others) have bought it on both Wii U and 3DS even though it is the exact same game, purely because being able to carry my game on a train journey with me or to a StreetPass meetup is worth it.

so true.

I've gone for Zelda and Art Academy (as a side thing). Not the new Zelda though! - but Spirit Tracks, which is one of those DS games I want to play. Always loved the Wind Waker style

Spirit Tracks is the poorest Zelda game made in recent years. It's still a good game, but it's the only Zelda game that I ever felt bored with, and I never thought that possible with a Zelda game.

Also KI: Uprising is still my favourite 3DS game. Such underate

AC: New Leaf is in a league of its own of course.

Awww, me and my poor decision making skills :( It was a flip between Phantom Hourglass and Tracks, but after reading some reviews that said the first is very much like Wind Waker (in puzzles etc.) I went for the 2nd. Mind you, all Nintendo games tend to get 4-5 stars on amazon, which makes life a bit harder

That's like choosing between being kicked and punched. They're both pretty terrible.

Crazy talk, Phantom Hourglass was great - the touch controls work well and I really liked the central dungeon.

Spirit Tracks is a bit mediocre but would still have been very enjoyable had it not been for those bloody train sections which wrecked it.

But toon Link so not all bad - god I wish they'd do a proper follow up to WW

I was terribly disappointed with them. They control terribly and the games just aren't fun. They're not proper 2D Zelda games, they're touch-screen-forced Wind Waker-themed action games with no soul.
