Hello, gents!

With A Link Between Worlds coming out at the end of the month, And with the 3DS Library getting rather great (I'm well up for playing Fire Emblem, Pokémon X/Y, Phoenix Wright: Dual Destinies and SMT IV), I'm in the market for a 3DS at some point.

Shopto is still selling Cosmo Black 3DS systems for £110, which seems like good value against the recently released 2DS. However, there's also the Zelda Limited Edition 3DS XL, which looks nice, but I'd rather have an actual cartridge due to everyone in the known universe bashing Nintendo's account system.

Is there really any inferiority when it comes to opting for a standard 3DS, in comparison to the XL? In terms of ergonomics, I was perfectly happy with the DS Lite when that came out in 2006. I'm also someone who prefers sharp image quality, even if it's a trade-off to screen size - I keep hearing about how the LCD screens in each 3DS model (and as time went on, if it's anything like the DS Lite production run!) are different, so some more clarification on that would be great.

EDIT: Oh, and if there's any way I can get one of those utterly ballin' Midnight Purple 3DS consoles, please let me know. It's a US-Only item, right? How is the import situation at the moment, in regards to buying things from the E-Shop and general availability and price of cartridge games?

EDIT 2: Oh, neat. Tronix still exists, and they're selling Midnight Purple for about £106 before delivery and import charges. guess I would like to know the lay of the land in regards to importing games, now!

It's region-locked so you'll have to import all your games. I don't think anyone's bothering.

The 3DS XL is a really good upgrade because the screen is such a good size, but the original is still, how you say, "fine". I don't feel particularly sad playing mine just because I've tried an XL. Depends how much money you want to spend, I guess.

XLs don't come with a charger though so you need to factor that in, too.

Don't get a normal 3DS - we have one and an XL and the XL is like a different console compared to the poor poor version that is the non XL!

Oddly the little one wants a 2DS for christmas, it will be her own and she was offered an XL instead but just prefers the size and shape of the 2ds - she does always play with the 3ds screens flat so it makes sense i guess!

It all looks very solid though, except for the main character? Maybe they're just not lighting him correctly yet. Until they showed the dual screen rendering and the skinning stuff it looked no better then Resi Revelations (imo) too.

It's still a massive shame Nintendo don't fund a Unity port. They're utter idiots not doing so and it means that guys like VD Dev have to do all the technical risk and leg work to pull off the game they want to make.

Yeah I thought it looked nice but wasn't blown away till about half way through the demo video when they started showing off a bit more. I was actually looking at it thinking why there aren't any really good RTS games on the 3DS. The machine can deal with the grunt plus stylus and 3D pad would make control a breeze.

Dev time and the risks involved in more complicated titles like that.

Like I said, if they'd only get Unity supporting it a lot of devs would jump at developing for the machine.

It wouldn't be Unity based as Unity doesn't support the 3ds. Maybe you mean they're converting it from Unity?

The Wii U eShop :) I think it was in one of the Directs a few months ago? I can't remember for the life of me what it was called. It looked like an RTS anyhow.

It's brilliant. May even pick up the Wii U version later down the line.

Apparently the Wiiu version suffers from a lot of slow down for some reason so I wouldn't bother with it.

It was designed for the 3ds and it's a perfect fit. Great game.

Cool, I'd love to see a RTS but I'm not sure how well it would control for south paws.. It's a natural fit for the stylus to intricately move around the map screen and select things. The nub would then be used to move around in broad strokes. I suppose the buttons could double as a directional pad but losing analogue control would suck. Sigh.. the old dual sticks issue again!

I agree but the risks involved would be huge. No easy cross platform support, difficult ambitious genre, long dev time etc. Nintendo need to provide the basis for devs to take a punt on their platforms. Specifically in this case, for the 3ds, it would involve Unity support.

I like taking risks, they're the only way to really achieve great things most times but there's risks and there's bloody stupid risks..!

We knew that there were some lewd acts involved with Swapnote, but Nintendo wasn't letting on what exactly caused them to shut down the service. Now we have details from Japanese publications.

- two men have been arrested

- they were alledgedly performing "improper acts" in hotel rooms with a 12 year-old girl

- this happened multiple times

- the men are aged 49 and 36

- this was facilitated through the 3DS

- child pornography charges have also been filed against another man, 44

- he allegedly had an 11 and 12 year old girls send him nude pictures through Swapnote

- other men have been charged with statutory rape and indecency through compulsion
