Christopher Dring of GamesIndustry.biz reporting that Switch overtook the PS5 to become the best selling console in the UK for 2022.

Impressive for a machine which has been out for, what, 6 years?

Vs. A console that was hardly available though? Or do the numbers not bear that out?

Honestly I'd assumed the Switch was smashing the PS5 this year.

Probably skewed by the Japanese numbers we get to see in here, along with feeling like "Next Gen consoles" are a bit low key this generation due to the lack of availability and all the cross gen support.

Console sales are down significantly this year in the UK for all platforms, with Xbox down the least.

Be interesting to see if the Switch sales start to decline rapidly or gently now, will help dictate how quickly Nintendo are forced to stop milking it like they did the Wii and release a successor.

I wouldn't necessarily look at hardware sales as the only barometer of when Nintendo should launch new hardware. Software sales are just as, if not moreso important and the Switch's software market is still booming. 2022 was actually trending ahead of 2021 at the end of September and that was before Pokémon S/V launched.

Meanwhile, the Wii's software sales were already in the toilet come 2011 due to lackluster first and third party support.

What's not clear from that 90% of sales were digital is whether this includes in-game purchases. It says 30% was mobile (so digital only). So we're at:

60% digital (non-mobile)

30% mobile

10% physical

If in-game stuff is included it's a bit less clear how powerful digital is. Anyway, still big numbers.

I can’t say I’m surprised, I haven’t bought any physical games on Xbox or PlayStation in ages, last ones were Returnal and Cyberpunk. Switch on the other hand I’m still all physical wherever possible.

Looks like I’m soon to be a retro / PC only gamer.

I understand preferring physical, but why do you like PC then? Why is one digital only platform acceptable but not another? Genuine question, not trying be difficult.

I don’t buy many PC games, and those that I do are nearly all RTS games, which don’t have much presence on consoles.  The value of my steam library in its entirety is probably less than I spend in two months on console games.

I like the user-friendliness of consoles, so that’s where I buy nearly all my games. And I’ve never liked the amount of power that having a digital library gives to the platform holder.  Look at all the problems Pockets had with Sony.  With a physical game, the law is much clearer about what your rights are.

And I like shopping for a bargain when it comes to games.  I enjoy browsing game shops.

There’s also the matter of games being delisted.  If I want a physical copy of, say, Forza Horizon 2 on Bone I can probably find one. Whereas it’s not on the Xbox store any more.  I suppose some stores might still sell codes.  Look at the Atari 50 collection. Warbirds has been deleted from it.  Fortunately with my physical game I don’t have to update to the patch that deletes it.

For lots of reasons I prefer physical games.  PC is such a small part of my game time that I mind being all digital much less  If I lost my steam library I’d be annoyed but it wouldn’t be the end of the world.  I’d be gutted if I lost my PS4 collection.

I was wondering why my local formerly thriving CEX was now like the Marie Celeste.

Inevitable I guess, but sad.

Is it sad? CEX has always been a terrible place, hasn't it? Giving you pittances for things they'll then sell on for nearly full price, just cash converters for nerds.

Back in the early/ mid 90's the Rathbone Place store was pretty legendary - both for the range of import games and also the terrible music and utterly unhelpful staff.  The TCR shop that focussed on PC was also pretty famous.

As a nationwide chain it's always just been a version of cash converters

I'm not sure it does at all any more. Your disk is a licence to play. In many cases only so long as the developer, publisher or platform holder decide that the servers are available to download the actual game from, or patch it to the version that the console requires, or contact the servers when starting, and so on.

I’ve used them for years and it’s a great way to save money on gaming. They give a decent amount for trade-ins, fixed at half their re-sell price for cash and three-quarters for exchange.

In these days of digital downloads they’re also usually the cheapest source for old games, often a fraction of the price of the online stores.

Also a great source for obscure or hard to find movies and old tech. I picked up the Sphero R2-D2 for about fifty-quid, goes for between ninety and two-hundred quid elsewhere usually. Plus I just traded in a bunch of old crap, so it was essentially free.

Hence I don’t buy any games that are “always online”, unless they are very cheap indeed, which usually involves a second-hand physical copy.

If I buy a disk and it doesn’t work for any reason, then the solutions are immediately obvious.  I can return it if the disk is sold to me in damaged condition or trade it in.  If Sony decide to deny me access to my digital content then exactly what I can do about is far less clear.

I buy some digital games on Switch - buying Overtop there is naturally far cheaper than sourcing a Neo Geo original.  But I never buy them if there is a physical alternative.

I've not even switched my PS5 on in literal months. I really should sell it.

Do it quick for a good price as they say they’ve sorted the stock issues.

I’m pretty happy with their output, but if you’ve not been interested in the Sony exclusives from the last few years I doubt anything on the horizon will change your mind.

Agree although you maybe too late already. Stock seems to freely available and on FB marketplace they can be snapped up for around £350 at the moment. Main reason I sold mine just before the silly season (around October time) for what I paid for it.

Not that I won't ever pick one up again however waiting for some more releases and a hardware revision. Also want to see what PSVR 2 turns out like in particular how well it works with GT7.

Oof, Ubisoft have had a difficult Quarter looking at the results. It seems Just Dance 2023 and Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope in particular have underperformed.

Slowly but surely, the company seems to be going down.

According to this they've cancelled 7 unannounced games in the last 6 months or so. Ouch.

Shame about Rabbids, but I could how the core Mario audience wouldn’t get it. It’s not a difficult game by any means but it’s unlike anything else.

It really is, as it's an excellent game that clearly had a lot of love poured into it and deserves to do well. We all want publishers and developers to take risks, but stuff like this just makes it clearer why they are often not prepared to.
