And this is why MS will not pull CoD from PS consoles unless it absolutely has too. Still making $$$s from each one of those sales to PS owners. Think MS's strategy these days will be one of "inclusivity" rather than "exclusivity". Hence the Invesment into mobile devices, xCloud and TVs.

Microsoft sure do love talking about inclusivity and ending exclusives whilst buying up large chunks of the industry and making them exclusive.

Well, there goes Splatoon 3's record.

Nintendo has announced that Pokémon Scarlet and Violet have sold 10 million copies in their first 3 days on the market. In Japan alone, S/V crossed the 4 million units mark at 4,05 units sold. Outselling the entirety of Sun/Moon on the 3DS.

For comparison, Splatoon 3 sold 3,45 million in its first 3 days in Japan.

The worldwide number is also the biggest software opening ever for a software title on a Nintendo system and the biggest opening Nintendo has ever had.

The numbers include both physical sales as well as digital versions.

EDIT:

The current list of big openings for Switch software:

-Pokémon Scarlet/Violet - 10.000.000 units

-Pokémon Legends: Arceus - 6.500.000 units

-Pokémon BD/SP - 6.000.000 units

-Pokémon Sword/Shield - 6.000.000 units

Not Pokemon numbers but impressive nonetheless.

Kind of expected really though? AAA game releases are a bit thin on the ground at the moment for sure and with PS4 combined with PS5 there are around 120m consoles out there?!

I was thinking similar, as a % of player base and being a AAA game in a barren time the numbers dont seem all that impressive…. But then you think, 5.1 million is an incredible number to sell on launch - not Splatoon impressive but not bad

It certainly doesn't incentivise them to do better next time. Compared to Ninendo's releases the severe lack of polish from what I've seen is embarrassing, amateurish even.

Sales wise there's nothing stopping them from continuing on with the same amount of bugs. But Game Freak have shown to be pretty eager to chase their fans desires. A lot of S/V features were implemented due to fan demand. But GF's lack of skill at creating 3D games in general is really tripping them up combined with an insane release schedule that had them thinking they could release this and Legends Arcues in the span of 12 months and everything would turn out fine.

I'd say at this point they'd need help from a second developer with the creation of the mainline series. Bandai Namco or Monolith seem good candidates to me.

Dat Switch numbers :o

Yeah the Switch just keeps on selling in volume... I can see why though small, compact cheap. Works with a TV and portable. Covers off everything I guess. Seems like the Japanese really have moved away from the typical home console. However looking at the sales of other Nintendo portables looks like the Switch has just taken over the sales of these.

Tempted to pick up another Switch (OLED version this time) in the black Friday sales and get the Atari collection on it. Would be sweet playing those wherever. Although I expect a new Switch will be announced next year so I'll hold off perhaps and see what gets announced. I expect when the new Zelda is announced it will be in tandem with and upgraded hardware...

You should let them know mate. If you’re quick you might be able to get the corks back in the bottle.

I can see the Lite maybe getting a new revision. Besides that I don't think we're seeing new hardware anytime soon at all. They'd be mad to announce anything right now, even if the tech to do so was readily available (it isn't). They're probably looking forward to selling 120-150M Switch games next year - announcing new hardware would likely put a dent in that, that to a degree.

people have been predicted new hardware every year since 2019, it's just attempts at manifesting a more powerful machine than anything based on evidence or trends

We’ve also had new Switch hardware every two years since launch in 2017 with Switch Lite and Switch OLED, so it wouldn’t be out of the ordinary if we see a new model of some sort next year if they maintain that frequency. Whether that will be an actual Switch successor with more powerful hardware is debatable, but I think it’s more likely will just get a revision of some kind and the actual Switch 2 in 2024/25.

I suppose the question is do Nintendo need to release new hardware? I wonder if the Switch in its current form is holding any game developments back? Third parties will always want more powerful hardware but I guess the question is will it make for better games? Arguably not... I quite like the fact Nintendo are keeping long cycles on hardware makes a change from most areas of tech. Sure it's based on older hardware but really if the games are great who cares?

All this is leaving me in a bit of a quandary. Not sure to buy one now or just wait until the next Zelda game gets a release.

Oh absolutely, Nintendo won’t release a new console until there is a reason to do so, and that reason could be there are new stories to tell, new ideas etc, and that the current Switch just isn’t powerful enough. Perhaps the next model could have super fast storage like PS5 and Xbox Series, and they are just waiting until the time is right. It could be that they want to go down the VR route, or introduce more advanced controls, better audio, streaming. With Nintendo I’ve learned to always expect the unexpected!

With regards to buying one now I wouldn’t hesitate if I were you, it has a fabulous library and is still the most convenient and versatile way to play games IMO.

Whatever technical issues people are having with Scarlett and Violet, the general audience don't seem to care too much considering the games had a fairly typical drop for a Pokémon game in its second week of release. Only Black/White and X/Y had a bigger second week then S/V

Switch hardware also remains quite high and the PS5 is now pretty much going to crash through the 1 million units sold for the year. When all is said and done it'll reach 1,2 million or 1,3 million for the year. A number that's in line with the PS4's better years.

EDIT: For reference, the last few second week sales for earlier Pokémon games since the 3DS.

Bit of an understatement lol - it's going to sell at least 4x more than any other platform in the year and is over 10x the userbase. Not sure anyone saw this kind of domination coming. It's an absolute monster.

Still no sign of a huge drop for S/V which indicates that the WoM is good enough on the game heading into the Christmas season. Meanwhile, the new M+R has a pretty low opening.

PS5 still seems to have some issues regarding stock. Still, much better numbers then last year. That's for sure. Same goes for Xbox and even the old PS4 seems to have some gas left in the tank.

NPD results are out for November in America. PS5 was top in both hardware and dollars sales. Switch was second and xbox third. To nobodys surprise CoD was the biggest selling game followed by ragnarok and Pokemon (although pokemon might have beaten both as digital sales are not included for it but they are for the others).

A frankly amazing hold for Pokémon S/V leads the way on a solid holiday week. DQ: Treasures opens with some great numbers for a DQ spin-off after a troubled development. Add in a good opening for Witch on The Holy Knight and baby, you got yourself a Famitsu stew going!

Hardware is equally solid. PS5 crosses 1 million sold in a year for the first time in its lifecycle in Japan. Switch, on the other, is still pulling in numbers the DS & 3DS did in their better years.

Exceptional numbers for the PS5 this week, after all the dooming and glooming of its position in Japan(me being one of those doomposters), getting the best selling version of Crisis Core and posting above 70k is very good for system. Let's see how next year's releases fair starting with Forspoken and RE4 Remake. The Switch still going strong for its 6th Christmas season is tremendous as well. It will finish the year at 4.7/4.8 million YTD which is a number that rivals the best-selling Nintendo DS in its later years.

Software wise, FF7 Crisis Core is the big release and is seeing tremendous results with a launch of above 150k. S-E's remasters have all done tremendously well this year so expect to see more of these down the line. Dare we hope for FF: Tactics War of the Lions remastered?

Launch aligned, Pokémon Scarlet/Violet have passed Pokémon Black/White in terms of raw physical sales. That might not sound impressive but B&W had the biggest launch in the series in terms of physical numbers. Take a look at the following graph from Hiska-kun from Installbase:

image.thumb.png.a6e40c4ff775e06e1d83cfa88dea69b6.png

Splatoon 3 finishes over 3.6 million physical. Keep in mind that all the numbers you see do not include physical sales. You can easily add another 1.5/2 million units to both S/V and S3 when you add that in. In the rest of the chart, we see many games from earlier in the year finish nicely high up. Mario+Rabbids is also showing quite some nice legs in terms of sales after a rather disastrous launch. Sadly, Crisis Core didn't manage to hang on for one more week on any platform. Which makes this a rather Nintendo dominated list.

Hardware wise, the Switch concludes with another year where sales are down compared to the previous year, but still up compared to it's highest pre-pandemic year of 2019. Extraordinary performance for a system in its 6th year on the market and about to enter the 7th. Meanwhile, the PS5 finishes up a bit lower then anticipated at 1.1/1.2 million but still up compared to last year. 2023 is going to be crucial for Sony in Japan. Let's see if they can get the PS5 to 1.5/2 million in the region.

On another note: what are everybody's expectations sales-wise for next year? Both Japan and globally. Do you think the Switch will have a massive drop off? Will Sony surge with the PS5? Do you think Xbox will emerge victorious in the Japanese market? Or is Steam Deck the true next-gen device that we've been craving?

Expect the revised PS5 will be announced at some point in the first quarter and sales were will be steady .Switch will reach saturation point in '23 - no surprises there as it'll be in its sixth year so expect the sales to tail off a bit this year with a new console being announced in first quarter '24.

Xbox not sure about depends if MS can deliver on its first party content. Expect MS will be competitive on console pricing and bolstering it's GamePass content. So steady sales. Expect Sony to keep in front marginally.

I expect Switch to carry on selling well next year, Nintendo have announced some big games and we will most likely see a hardware revision of some sort.

PS5 should continue its growth, especially if we start seeing titles like Spider-man 2. Hopefully we’ll get some big announcements regarding PSVR2 and also what Naughty Dog are doing.

Xbox really comes down to whether they can deliver on their promise of the games, and I’m sure we’ll start to see the fruits of their labour during 2023.

Looking at the above graph, i'd say 2023 is going to be a make or break year not just for the PS5, but for Sony in general and its relationship to Japanese third parties. PS5 software sales have sold incredibly below expectations, even when accounting for a possible 50% digital rate in terms of raw sales. If things don't improve come FF16 then I can see Capcom, S-E, Namco, etc. Make a hard shift towards more midrange platforms such as Switch, Steam Deck or continued cross-gen support continuing well into 2025.

This is a wrong interpretation of the problem. Japanese publishers who wish to compete in the high spec games market have practically zero choice but to support Sony or PC if they want to develop for a platform which can handle that type of game.

Microsoft have negligible presence in the home market and are outclassed abroad by either of the other usable options and Nintendo don't make a hardware platform capable of running that type of software. If they relied on the home market for the majority of their sales, then they'd target the dominant platform in that market and not make high spec games at all. If they want to expand their audience reach and not be reliant on the home market, then Sony's lack of sales in the home market is much less of a problem anyway.

Sony already signaled their effective withdrawal from the domestic market back with the PS4, when Japan got demoted from favoured nation status and got dropped to second tier status, even behind Yurop.
