I dunno, it’s 1080/60 vs 720/59…… it does look a fair chunk better on Switch and not just the res - i think i have 6 copies across Wii U and Switch and the Switch is a much better experience, its hard to improve on perfection ;)

 

I loved the Wii U to be fair, remote play that worked properly just on the pad and I even liked that - some how playing Super Metroid was better on the Wii U pad than on a Switch handheld IMO and that was the same for many retro games…. I really should pick one up as the kids have claimed my original one!

Far more the Xbox series or PS5 that at best had some DLC, a remake and some cross gen stuff….. maybe thats why the Switch is still killing it, only console to get new game experience first party stuff ;)

As someone who played both originally on Wii U, the Switch versions are not a great value upgrade. It's years since I last played the Wii U Mario Kart 8 but from memory it had fewer characters and only allowed one weapon at a time, and didn't have 200cc races.  And by the end of next year even with its dlc Mario Kart 8 deluxe will have double its number of tracks.

 

As others have pointed out, there were first party games on the Switch in its first year, including the celebrated Mario Odyssey and the underrated Arms.  And now there are many more Nintendo games on Switch that weren't on Wii U.

 

Edited - research shows that Wii U Mario Kart 8 did have 200cc races.

I mean, you actually said that they are so similar, not that they were similar four years ago, so there's no need to omit first party games that came out more recently.

So there's also Fire Emblem (Warriors and Three Houses), various Kirby games, Game Builder Garage, Luigi's Mansion, Paper Mario, Ring Fit Adventure, Mario Home Circuit, Splatoon 2 and 3, several Xenoblade games, Metroid Dread, Odyssey, Yoshi's Crafted World, Animal Crossing, Miitopia and Warioware Get It Together, which AFAIK didn't come out on Switch.

 

The Wii U is very underrated and it is frustrating that the Switch hasn't had original Donkey Kong and NSMB games (I used to include Mario Kart before the booster packs).  But to suggest its software line up is comparable to the Switch is just wrong.

I think that outside of the quality of similarity of the software catalogue, what really wound up killing the Wii U was just the enormous gaps between software releases.

 

Did the Wii U have some great games that only found an audience when they were brought to the Switch? Sure.

But what got in the way was Nintendo's awful planning of the software line-up on the Wii U.

 

On the Switch we've had 1 year where we didn't have a 1st party release once a month: 2020. Every other year we've had close to 1 Nintendo developed/published game a month.

 

The Wii U had a much harder time on the market right from its first year where it took Nintendo 8 months to finally publish a new game after launch. 2014 and 2015 were a bit better in that regard but not by much.

 

I often wonder why so many Wii U owners forget about that little issue when discussing the console or its line-up. It killed interest not just in terms of sales, but as an owner of it myself its the only Nintendo console ive ever regretted owning.

Also, wiiu launched with Nintendoland, which was a 10 minute diversion at best, switch launched with the best game ever. And when wiiu was announced no-one knew what it was, one short advert for switch and you knew immediately what the proposition was. It’s like the company and it’s messaging was transformed in a few years.

Really? Given the PSP did it with PS3 prior to 2009 and Sony pushed the Vita & PS4 combo very early doors it seems that it was defi part of their plans.

 

I guess it was the ‘DualShock in your hand’ experience they went on about and then didnt give it the same number of buttons that grates - they wanted a portable PlayStation to play the same games on the move and then crippled that with bad design, it was more apparent when the streaming stuff became a potential USP to push sales.

I just can't fathom how Sony let Nintendo, of all companies, run away with the Monster Hunter IP. The series that essentially created the software market for the PSP in Japan, that got other third parties interested in making more PSP games and cancelling existing projects for the PS2 and the Wii. All of that and the company that snagged away Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest under Nintendo's nose, let's Nintendo do something very similar to them.

 

Did nobody ever consider that Nintendo had already shown they were ready to do just that when they heavily embraced and pushed MH3 for the Wii? Or when Reggie Fils-Aime said pretty explicitly that Nintendo's target for the 3DS was to merge the DS and PSP software market?

 

It just winds up looking like Sony keeps underestimating one of their competitors. I just don't understand why.

Because that's how market dynamics often work isn't it. The market leader rest on their laurels or assumes their position is stronger or thinks they know the market best. They forget what it took to get them where they are and risk throwing it in the toilet at every opportunity. At some point most successful people and organisations think they know better than others. Occasionally they look like visionaries but mostly they look like fools.

 

Same reason MS watched Sony spunk their early chances with the PS3 pitching a media machine and then did the same the very next generation. (Although in this case I think the non-media part and the digital licencing thing was fine, they just needed to shut up and let it happen rather than putting it centre stage).

 

Or Nintendo made Wii U assuming that the gamepad was a good idea or that they understood how to market it.

 

Or Intel suddenly find themselves allowing AMD back into the consumer CPU market.

Not quite, a lot of it is promoting the wrong people due to faulty numbers.

 

For example, one particular cycle that often happens (the best example of this was Boeing) is that sales and marketing staff get the credit for good performance as their KPIs or targets will reflect the greater volume or profitability of the company.

 

They then get into decision making roles and so make choices that reflect their backgrounds e.g reducing costs (and likely quality) or misunderstanding the technical aspects and alienating the engineering side.

 

Once you've got a bunch of number nonces in decision making roles, that's when it's easy for them to both think they're truly the reason for the previous success and that their reading of the market tea leaves will be infallible.

 

Hence you get execs who definitely know that 3D is the next fad to capitalise on or that the key to securing long term success is dominating the living room, because the numbers say so.

 

Meanwhile, the engineers either have no say or have already moved on. Without that healthy balance, you're always at a bit risk of heading down a business cul de sac.

 

These companies aren't really living and breathing entities but complex organisations that can easily be undone by the wrong metrics or interpretation of data. I don't think it's a coincidence that the departure of several key figures at Sony plus the rise of Jim Ryan see them heading down a path that could quite easily see the PS6 do weaker numbers. At the moment their brand loyalty is doing the heavy work but they're getting dangerously closed to being pinched by MS and Nintendo.

I think the PS Vita and Wii U are similar in that respect; they were both marketed around a similar idea of a home console/portable hybrid - the idea being you could stream your PS4 games to your Vita, and Wii U to use off screen play with the game pad. Neither were very successful. 
 

The difference being this lead Sony to abandon the handheld market altogether losing even more market share in Japan, whilst Nintendo stuck with its hybrid formula for Switch, and, well, the rest is history. 
 

It does seem incredibly short sighted of Sony.

A big drop for Splatoon 3 but that's to be expected after its massive opening last week. It has effectively crossed the 4 million mark.

 

The bigger release this week is the offline version of DQX which has sold out on every platform. After that we have a surprise result from the hardware side where we can see that Xbox has once again crossed the PS5 in terms of sales. Oh, and the Switch had a second 100k+ week this month.

That's Splatoon 3 posting what is the 9th highest week for a game on its 3rd week of release. Elsewhere we have a new Taiko with a rather soft launch and Diofield Chronicle doing a bit meh-ish. Last week's DQ remake has completely sold out on all platforms, hence only the Switch version charting here with such low numbers. S-E underestimated demand by quite a bit.

A drop for the Switch and PS5 rises once more. It has now finally passed the Wii U at a similar point in that systems lifespan. We also have Xbox doing incredibly at the moment. Microsoft might actually wind up outselling the 360 with the Series X/S.

 

On another note: word on the street in Japan is that the Switch Lite has all but sold out in most stores nation wide. Regular and OLED versions are also beginning to sell out.

Splatoon 3 is holding out quite nicely despite the double digit drops. It closes out September being just under 3 million at retail alone. Add in digital and it should be just above 5 million. Essentially matching the LTD sales of Splatoon 2 in just a month.

 

A quick little note: Install Base, the forum where these figures come from, is about to open up publicly. So if you want to follow sales discussions about Japan or elsewhere and want to despair at the insane hot takes you find nowhere else on the internet, give it a visit.
