Added in the hardware figures. I'll update the software list when the top 30 becomes available.

A bit of a shame to see that happen, really. People seem to miss the fact that Nintendo has essentially locked up the entire low to mid-end of the market in terms of software releases. Whereas Sony focuses primarly on AAA, with a bit of AA on the side these days. The Direct and SoP earlier this week showed as much, farm game overflow notwithstanding .

Alongside that, anything that's AA(or lower) and doesn't release on the Switch is pretty much DOA at this point. Slowly but surely, we're seeing Sony lose the entire low and mid-end of the market.

Not my thinking but for idiots...

A Nintendo AAA could be argued to be new core Mario (2D or 3D) games or Zelda or Mario Kart. We've had none for a while.

Zelda is coming next year. But that means the last 'new' one is actually from launch. And is a Wii U port released at the same time.

Mario Kart is a Wii U port but still adding content.

And Mario... What since Odyssey that isn't a Wii U port? Bowser's Fury. It counts for me but it's not quite a full title if we want to try to put the pointless AAA sticker on things.

It's easy to say Nintendo are neglecting their core games in preference to these other things but I don't think it's different to usual, a problem or doing th any harm at all.

I've seen this type of thinking aplenty, not just on social media or in gaming forums but with quite a few journalistic outlets as well. It basically comes down to this rote idea that anything that isn't a Mario Platformer/Kart or a 3D Zelda, isn't a AAA game. Something that ignores the enormous strides Nintendo has made in creating more AAA series then they've ever had before.

Splatoon qualifies for that title. Xenoblade qualifies for the title. Pokémon is clearly gunning for that status as well. And then we have Animal Crossing which has taken a seat next to Pokémon and Mario as Nintendo's top 3 series.

But sadly, there's a contingent which will always ignore those series because they're not the legacy brands. Pretty sad.

They should clearly focus on going third-party instead. How can they possibly look at other hardware sales and not want a slice of that pie? Especially in Japan.

A £480 console and, checks notes, a £500 VR headset

I went to the local Yamada Denki and the next door Bic Camera in my lunch hour.

Yamada were completely sold out of consoles.

Bic Camera had only one type of console on sale (if we don't count the Egret and the Astro City).

Anyone care to guess the only console that could be bought from two large electronics stores?

Spoiler

X-Box Series S

aren't japanese ps5s being resold around asia and the rest of the world? i'm pretty sure i read the attachment rate was abysmal and japanese ps5s were the most likely to be found in other countries. it's been a while though.

The Switch is in a fascinating position where it’s not that much more powerful than it’s predecessor and they had a bunch of games that they’d spent a lot of money developing, that were fantastic and that they knew nobody had played. It makes total sense to give those games a bigger audience rather than spending millions making a sequel.

I do find it weird that there’s this strange duality where people make comments about the Wii U being shit whilst praising the Switch, when in terms of software they’re so similar. The U absolutely failed in terms of marketing, but software wise it was a beast.

Well, they aren't "so similar".  They have many of the same flagship Nintendo franchises in common.  In some cases, like Mario kart 8 and 3D World, they have been much improved on the Switch.  3rd party support on Wii U is absolutely dwarfed by the support on the Switch.  Wikipedia (yeah, I know it's not gospel, so feel free to supply your own sources to the contrary), lists 790 Wii U games, and  4412 Switch games (not yet been updated with this week's releases, as it doesn't have Radiant Silvergun).

Plus, it's region free, so every one of those releases is available to every single Switch owner, whereas Wii U owners were further limited to what was released in their region unless they wanted to jailbreak their machine.

owning a wii u from launch was a painful experience, even a fully patched wii u isn't really a fun prospect in space year 2022.

the switch is orders of magnitude better in terms of quality of life and comfort. the only things i miss from the wii u are the miiverse plaza, the dpad and all the menu music

It’s not really a monopoly but a failure on Sonys part and I guess MS too - it’s not like Sony haven’t ever had a foothold in Japan and it seems a choice to turn their back on the domestic market - I guess they are only interested where the money is.

I mean it in terms of "are Sony asleep at the wheel"? The attach rate for the PS5 is crap, implying it's being sold elsewhere and the figures are actually worse. I know that the market for non-handhelds in Japan is limited, but they're giving the impression that they don't care to correct the slide.

I know that elsewhere seems to be more than taking up the slack but quite a lot of Nintendo's market position is guaranteed by people having grown up with their games. If a generation of Japanese gamers don't, what does that mean for the future?

honestly don't know, feels like we've reached the stage where there's no room for a new player and the choice is either between Nintendo, Steam or mobile. Steam Deck doesn't look like it'll be sold at a mass market price any time soon, so... *shrugs*?

Japan seems to be handheld land now. If Sony released another handheld they’d do pretty well. It’s just how it is.

the vita bombed so hard i don't think sony will ever get over the ptsd. they certainly don't have the studios to make it worthwhile.

I think that’s the problem both Nintendo and Sony have/had. A hybrid console is obviously working amazingly for Nintendo, but I don’t think Sony can do a hybrid without compromising their ability to compete technically with Microsoft.

I think Microsoft's approach is rather smart in this regard looking at how things are playing out now. I don't seriously think they'll ever be relevant in Japan, but still: having a really small and really cheap console on the shelves while simultaneously giving everyone with a phone acces to the game pass library through streaming is smart alternative to Nintendo's hybrid approach. I don't think either Sony or Microsoft would be remotely successful by attempting to copy the Switch wholesale. Nintendo has that sown up.

It's fun seeing Nintendo back on top. Most of their current output doesn't appeal to me, but it's nonetheless fascinating to see this play out.

Let's be clear - Sony caused the Vita to bomb. It was a bomb of their own making. It could have done a lot better than it did if they hadn't prematurely buried it.

Sony, and to a lesser extent Microsoft, have made a rod for their own backs going down the power route with their chipsets; then again you’ve got devices like the Steam handheld thing, so it’s possible they could do a kind of handheld PS5 albeit lower res, fewer graphical features etc.

Mario Kart 8 is exactly the same on switch as it was on Wii U, except the DLC is included. SM3DW has a small extra DLC campaign. As someone who played both originally on Wii U, the Switch versions are not a great value upgrade. Then there’s BOTW which is the same, and things like Mario Maker 2 which would be classed as the laziest sequels ever if they were on the same hardware as the previous game.

Absolutely fair point about third party support, that does transform the software catalogue. But in terms of first party Nintendo games, it took several years for the Switch to receive anything that wasn’t an almost identical Wii U port.

I miss a lot of things about the Wii U. The asymmetrical multiplayer with the screen in the controller providing opportunities for Pac-Man VS style games, the larger touch screen with stylus making Mario Maker way better to play, the virtual console’s way better selection of retro games, the dual screen support for DS style second screen experiences and assist modes, player 1 not needing to be in direct view of the TV, full Wii BC. I genuinely think it’s a massively underrated console.

Vita came out at the wrong time in terms of the competition. Mobile phone gaming was where it was  at. I reckon they’d have a better shot this time given that mobile gaming has become (mostly) a f2p micro transaction hellscape.

While I have some love for the Vita they released it at the wrong time and it was the wrong product - it was clearly meant to be a remote play device but didnt have enough buttons to do it but it did have a folly of a back pad. They got schooled by Nintendo making the same mistakes Sega made with the GG - wrong product at the wrong time aiming at a market that didnt exist.
