love that it’s a bit underpowered, if that is even the right way of describing it. It draws less power than the big consoles, it’s smaller, much smaller, and developers really have to work to get the most out of it maximising it’s power - so it’s much more efficient.

But like the poster above says, when you’ve got something like XC3 running on it and looking amazing, a huge big budget game that it is, yet still using way fewer resources than other consoles - it makes much more sense commercially too.

Everything about it is efficient and I hope the next one gets designed similarly .

That’s interesting but I wonder why backwards compatibility might be awkward?

I honestly can't remember, and it's buried somewhere in the podcasts.
Basically it's something along the lines off it's not built in as a consideration of the design of the chip. I know it's basically a Tegra X1 and we already have at least the X2, but that was the general idea they were expressing. Even Leadbetter was talking about Nintendo possibly having to implement some sort of emulation for Switch games running on new hardware.

Could all be bullshit, I might have got the sentiment wrong.... and as mentioned it just buried in there somewhere.

I really like the Switch as a home for really polished 360 games. Not literally, but it's nice to have a console where billions of dollars doesn't have to be spent on making sure the lead character in Xenoblade 3's shoes shine perfectly. They let devs make nicely artworked games that look absolutely cracking in handheld and that aren't anywhere near as costly if they don't make 30 billion dollars on day one.

Good console, the Switch.

Yeah look at the release schedules all that extra power gets you compared to the Switch.

No thanks.

It's got like five major first party releases this year between Pokemon, Xenoblade, Kirby, Bayonetta 3, Splatoon 3, even with BotW2 being pushed back.

Xbox has a grand total of 2, and one of them is the full release of Grounded.

The Switch is comparatively extremely underpowered but it doesn't matter because the games that do well and which the audience is most interested in, are tailor-made for the Switch.

The power difference only becomes an issue when you want to port a game. PS4/Bone ports already take a bit more effort than usual, but when you start attempting to port PS5-native games then the cost of redesigning a game from the ground up so that it can run at all, might not be worth it for publishers. But again, since I'm not sure the main Switch audience cares for the kind of third-party games that are most popular on Series/PS5  - s it really a big loss? Look at this list:

Everyone just mass hallucinating Xenoblade Chronocles 3, Switch Sports, Kirby, Mario Strikers etc. then?

Why would the Switch need a port of I dunno, Starfield? Or even something like GTA6 if it ever comes out?

It's easily outselling two homeconsoles that are umpteen times more powerful with its current low specs. WHY would Nintendo then think, gee maybe we need more power? Use more expensive components to lower our profit margins to make the kind of games our audience doesn't seem to care about, easier to port?

If you need more power in a handheld format, buy a Deck and be done with it. You can play thousands of Nintendo games on it including GameCube.

The chart rundown a few posts ago that you’re (albeit indirectly) commenting on would appear to tell a different story.

The only reason I think the power matters is that it's always a question if will an indie game ported to Switch for which handheld seems best actually run well enough. I think most of the issue is actually just poor ports but it's not an experience I want on a console. I want to be able to.buy because I'm interested without needing to check it's performance.

But it has no real competition so no reason to make it better for that.

I think modern engines are scalable enough that this is not the issue many people think it is moving forwards - see the recent Bright Memory title that managed it just fine*. Also, see both MS and Sony still wanting their games on XB1/PS4. Older stuff yes, but I think going 'to the metal' on hardware is getting less and less common/practical.

* = yes it made some cut backs, and depending on your level of nerd you may either accept them or scream that you never play anything that doesn't have full GI because it makes your left lobe pulse, but it's pretty remarkable how close it still looks really.

I think we're reaching the end of that (surprisingly long) crossgen honeymoon with multiple first-party current-gen exclusives arriving in 2023 and the first handful of third-party publishers already announcing that they're cancelling the last-gen versions of a few upcoming games.

Yes, that's right. Your eyes are not deceiving you. That's a full on software top 30 completely dominated by 1 single platform. This has happened before a couple of times last year and this year, but the significance of it went a bit unremarked upon so I'll eleborate why it's notable.

Because before 2021, the last time you a single platform dominate the chart like this was back in 1988 during the NES days. When there was way less competition in the market. Even during the heights of the DS and the Wii, you could still see the PS2, PSP and the PS3 sneak in a couple of titles. Right now, if you want to sell your game in Japan, you need to be on Switch.

Oh hey, is that Soul Hackers 2 releasing next week in Japan?

Yeah seems an odd decision not releasing SH2 on Switch doesn’t it, I’m sure it will perform well on PS5 though, maybe even bumping sales if Series X|S in the process.

Considering a lot of people first played soul hackers on the 3DS you’d think they’d put SH2 on switch. But SH1 was originally a Saturn/PlayStation so who knows what Atlus is thinking.

Also to follow all the talk about 3rd party titles on switch: Cloud ports are the future of 3rd party AA/AAA on that system whether we like it or not.

Either that or AA titles developed with the Switch as a base and then up port it to other systems. Monster Hunter Rise looks to be a good example of how well that could turn out.

And now for a chart that looks more like a healthy marketplace with decent competition.
