Has there been many of those? Genuinely asking cos I don't really know of many PS5 exclusives.

I would gather the bigger jap dev titles that are PS5 or Sony exclusive sell significantly more in the west than Japan so its probably not that relevant. FFVII remake series will probably be the most obvious examples.

Playstation's position in the JP market has been a discussion point for quite some time. An interesting perspective came up in one of the Media Create threads on Install Base around the beginning of this year from someone who works at a smaller publishers of Japanese games.

2021 was a disaster for the system. a shocking, surprising, and unprecedented disaster for the playstation brand. the ps4's userbase exists, but it isn't growing. there are no new fans getting consoles in a way that will drive software sales. that means all you can draw from are an existing userbase of customers. the ps5 could technically take on that growth... but a year in, it really looks like there's a problem beyond scalpers. there's just a lack of interest in the platform in general.

you'll see falcom on switch next year with nayuta. unlike what capcom does, this isn't a test. falcom doesn't have resources for testing. this is a training tool. they're going to use this to get their developers to build experience with switch. they're going to be on switch with the next big thing after the current kiseki story is over (because hajimari/kuro were planned before any switch development started internally for them).

some atlus fellas will need to swallow pride and port over more persona. ps5/ps4 for persona 6 in 2023 or whatever is possible, but at that point, atlus and sega themselves would be ceding all of the japanese sales to focus exclusively on a western marketing deal. considering the history of dragon quest and nintendo, i doubt dragon quest xii was going to be skipping switch, but if there was any chance of that, then it was dashed this year (similar to how dqxi came to 3ds).

some companies squandered an entire generation to get anything going. level-5 gave up a pretty good partnership to due to their own hubris, believing their success was purely on their own backs. idea factory kinda stumbled around after the vita died and didn't have anything prepped for new platforms. spike chunsoft is only now getting their biggest internal brand on switch with a bit of a delayed success.

in general it feels like things will settle into a new normal in 2022 and 2023. past success does not guarantee future success, but i doubt anyone is going to take a wait and see approach to the switch's successor hardware.

i wonder how xenoblade 3 will do, feels like it's been given more of a push by nintendo (at least in europe) than any of the others and technically this year you haven't got any major competition on the switch in that genre. it's got 2 clear months before splatoon 3 and that has 2 clear months from pokemon. i suppose there's still time for nintendo to announce and release metroid prime remake by november but i don't see that as something that would impact xenoblade 3's legs.

How many Japanese developers have tied their flag to the PS5 mast without (a) getting a lovely big bag of cash from Jim Ryan or (b)making a game that's intended to target Western markets heavily?

It's been rumoured for ages and on top of that you're surely expecting these new games to be close to release:

- new Mario 3D title

- new Mario 2D title

- new Donkey Kong

- sequel to 1,2 Switch

- whatever the Mario Kart team have been doing that isn't MK9

- new Yoshi game

- Pikmin 4

plus we have no idea if Nintendo are working on a new Captain Toad, Starfox, F-Zero, 2D Zelda, Punch Out or Chibi Robo.

at the very least you'd expect one major Mario release next year alongside BOTW 2 and a new original title from Nintendo. they like to have their major titles spaced out but a remaster of Metroid Prime isn't going to get the same consideration that MP4 will. It's a big if but MP4 being a year away would mean I could see Nintendo throwing as much resources as they could to get it out before Christmas 2023. You'd want a Metroid Prime remake to have enough time to sell and generate buzz, they're not going to drop it in the summer.

Of course if it doesn't come out this year then we know that we're not seeing MP4 before 2024...

Prime is twenty (good god) years old this November which seems like a perfect time to release the rumoured remaster/remake if it's going to happen.

With that said, I don't think Prime 4 comes out on the Switch. If it's going to be a late 2023 or early 2024 game then I feel like it makes sense for it to be an early showcase for a Switch 2. I know I'm running the risk of people posting that obnoxious beacon gif by mentioning a Switch 2 but that's my hot take. Which isn't all that hot.

I struggle to see a Switch successor next year mostly due to the chip situation as well as the sales of the current models. If it was starting to flag I'd see the sensibility behind pushing forward even with potentially restricted production but if they can get through to 2024 with a cheaper cost of build, more availability of components and the chance to bump up some specs then I think Nintendo would be mad not to hold on.

Plus I think Nintendo will intend on cross gen support. A lot of games have already been designed with dynamic resolution and frame rate, being able to have the same titles release a la Xbox without needing to put out different versions would make Nintendo's transition as painless and seamless as possible.

Being able to put out a premium Switch 2 while having a Switch 1 lite as close to $99 as possible would be a hell of a move to tie up the market in the medium future.

That’s a big hope. They’ve never done a console sequel before, and I can’t personally ever see a £99 Switch 1 in production (with 110M units, and climbing, already out there) at the same time as they try to generate Switch 2 buzz.

It’d be more like them to let the Switch platform stagnate for the final year before throwing something completely different out with a whole new approach. At best it’ll be backwards compatible with Switch software, maybe.

since the latter days of Iwata they've reiterated that they want the Switch line to be a family of products and keep referring to iOS/Apple as an example. Facilitating a clean break from both their home and handheld lines was understood as a necessary step towards that. Maybe the Wii U wasn't worth keeping around but the 3/DS line at least had a rich library to draw from.

I'd be surprised if they spent all this time fostering the Switch brand only to go for a clean break between generations again. I don't expect there to be massive changes in the form factor or experience, I think all the new stuff will be under the hood so it'll look like a Switch and function like one but with a generation step up in innards. I don't think it'll be a radical departure since they're continuing with nVidia, not to mention that they already have the proprietary cart figured out. They've been trying to get that cost down for years, changing that would be business folly.

They might do some kind of Pro Joycon or something but even then I think they'll just work on tweaking it to make sure they can cut costs on production and packaging. Having joycons supported across Switch 1 and 2 makes everything easier.

I hope that they just develop patches for their older titles to take advantage of the new hardware but keep the transition seamless cos honestly there's still a lot of mileage in the hybrid model IMO. More current gen stuff but handheld is pretty much the appetite of the market and I don't think they'll go wrong if they can keep getting the majority of Japanese devs on board while aiming for something in the window of the Series S for Western support.

…and well deserved!

It's apparently incorrect as it was based on an incomplete data set. So it's not currently in the Top 10 highest grossing list.

Correction:The NPD previously stated that Elden Ring was among the top ten best-selling games of all time in the US, but has since retracted this statement, clarifying that it was based on an incomplete data set. We have removed the reference to this in the article.

CoD has been the highest grossing branch of McDonald's/Subway in the US for the past 13 years purely based on revenue of copies sold annually.

But as they don't release any of the actual commercially valuable data, we'll never now how much money you have to generate to get a Top 10 All-Time placing currently.
