Good for Xbox but really surprised that the PS5 isn't selling a lot. Is that mostly shortage? Or is Japan all-in on Switch?

A little bit of column A(shortages) and a little bit of column B(all in on Switch). But what's been really dreadfull for the PS5 has been software sales. The attach rate for software is still under 1.0 game per console. Only recently has there been a release that's managed to climb above 100k in the physical charts.

is that a physical attach rate?

(in which case it means very little, except to the physical game retailers)

I totally believe that is all true. BUT that doesn't mean it isn't remarkable that an Xbox is selling *something* at all over there. It's still remarkable that at least a handful of Japanese consumers chose to buy an S instead waiting until the PS5 is back in stock, or spending the money on anything else but an S.

I'm definitely not an expert, but I been in Japan and inside Japanese houses - anecdotally they like small and aesthetically pleasing stuff. Apart from the Xbox brand itself, I can see how the small stylish S is very appealing - and then there's the low price on top of that - while the mahoosive PS5 exact opposite of that.

I'd be surprised if Microsoft managed to get a significant foothold in Japan in practice, but in theory I think the S is their best opportunity yet. If only they didn't need literal decades to get a handful of exclusives out.

Oh make no mistake, it IS remarkable. What the series X/S has just done hasn't happened since the 360 days. And you're right to mention how more appealing the series S is compared to the PS5. What I'm talking about shows how much Sony has taken Japan for granted and how that's left a vacuum for another competitor to fill.

Another reason for the Series X/S to become more popular may also be Minecraft. The Switch version has been raking it in for the past couple of years, selling close to 2,5 million copies in Japan alone. It's made Microsoft more known as a videogames brand then ever before.

Xbox seems to be picking up a bit of momentum on the import scene in China as well. There are a load of guys doing the three-year gold conversion thing and selling the accounts on Taobao, which cuts out a lot of the cross-region faffing for most people.

Absolutely no physical games in most of the shops but the Series consoles seem to be selling through quickly enough. Most weren't even bothering to stock the Xbox One over the last few years.

I knew nothing about this; wondered why I hadn't seen those threads in a while cos I liked the consistency.

Looks like Street Fighter V will likely overtake SNES SFII as the best selling single-SKU in the series before the end of its life, which is a decent result considering its (deservedly) poor performance at launch.

Interested to see how Street Fighter 6 performs out of the gate (later this year? And hopefully not Sony exclusive?).

The resetera mods went berserk even by their own standards, which were already as low as crocodile piss.

Wait wait wait, I'm really happy for you and Imma let you finish - but looking at that image they're comparing all the different editions of SFV across all platforms to specifically the SNES version of SF2 World Warrior, not counting other platforms or editions? Way to go ectetera but...

Yeah, a single SKU so it's a technicality. All versions of SFV are the same game while the various versions of Street Fighter II are distinct.

Well, if it makes Capcom happy then let them have this one :)

I think the aesthetic/size point is a really good call out.

For myself I got a series s as a stop gap as I couldn’t get anything else at the time, however I’ve really grown to love it and a big part of that is how small and unobtrusive it is. I’ve had a few chances to get a ps5 now but I know it’d have my young kids all over it just by how in your face it is.  The s just sits there silently waiting to be used.

I wonder if the sheer size of it puts people off.

The PS5?

That's nothing to do with the low sales figures in Japan.  They sell out the very instant they're available.  It's a lack of stock and nothing else.

*clears throat*

Well then, here we are for the first update regarding the weekly Famitsu sales figures. Don't know for how long we'll be doing this. but we'll find out together.

Apologies for the late update, my job got a bit in the way. Anyways, let's move on to the numbers. All of this comes from Installed Base from the ever thorough Chris1964, who's been compiling this data for over a decade by now.
