Nintendo Wii U

very bizarre they didn't film an american version of that demo. it would have cost next to nothing to make. plus the guy in it looks like he murders young women.

I've a sneaking suspicion they haven't got it up and running in the US yet.

Nintendo Japan don't always treat the USA division very well. Back in 1990 I was working at a UK developer and we had one of the first SNES dev kits (actually made & supplied to us by Sony Japan weirdly) . Some visitors from Nintendo USA wanted to have a look as they'd not seen the SNES in action at that point.

ahhh that makes more sense. the interface looks alot of fun though.

It really does. Having watched those vids I am quite excited at the UI and how different it seems to other stuff. Like how the pad seems to fit into the experience as well.

Yes.

Nope. Wii U games can use either, depends on the game. Mario works fine with either since it's not using any of the fancy motion stuff, some of the Nintendo Land games need Motion Plus.

Thats exactly what I wanted to hear. I ordered Mario U and the though of my son not being able to play with me as I only have normal wii wands is a bad one. Thanks.

It launches there in 4 days ohmy.png

The vid would have been made a while ago though. It's not like they have ever rushed a launch before!

I speak Japanese. Turns out you get a free fish tank full with the bottom covered in a thin layer of Jelly Beans if you use the USB port.

Corrected for you.

Translation is now out:

Parental Controls

- Nintendo realizes that some parents may fear that their children may use the Wii U's internet functionality without permission. Wii U has Parental Controls.

- Can restrict content based on user age, CERO (Japan ESRB) rating, internet functionality, internet browser, e-Shop spending, Miiverse functionality, friend registrations, videos, data management, internet settings

- Wii U keyboard input can save user input habits and predictive input in a specific database that depends on the game and user. Wii U does not save input data that you don't want other users to know into the database.

- Miiverse settings can be turned on/off depending on the save profiles per game.

USB Data Storage

- 8GB = 7.2GB, 32GB = 29GB in terms of actual save data. Wii U uses around 4.2GB when using the system for the first time.

- NSMBU is ~2GB, Nintendo Land is ~3.2GB. So, both won't fit into the Basic set at the same time.

- Wii U lets you put data onto a connected USB media drive.

- One USB drive at a time only.

- Cannot disconnect the external drive while plugged into the Wii U and receiving power.

- You can use general drives.

- In terms of powering the HDD while connecting to the Wii U, if you do not use a Y Cable Type drive (2 USB cables), then Nintendo cannot guarantee it will work properly.

- Nintendo can guarantee functionality if the HDD plugs into a power outlet.

- No games on USB Flash Memory due to games not running properly all the time (whatever this means...)

- Wii U will read up to 2TB only for external hard drives even if hard drive has more space.

- In Data Management, you must format the connected media drive. Note that this means you cannot use the drive with a PC.

- You can move data from internal Wii U storage to external USB media in Data Management and vice versa. Data on both internal and external media will appear in the menu.

- At launch, only 1 USB hard drive can be connected, but through a future update, more than 1 will be possible and you will be able to move data between them freely.

- SD Cards can hold PC data, Wii Virtual Console, Wii Ware, and Wii save data, but cannot be used to save Wii U game save data.

Backwards Compatibility

- Wii games, Virtual Console, Wii Ware stuff cannot be played using the GamePad screen, but only on the TV in Wii Mode

- Iwata: "We understand that there are people who were looking forward to playing Wii games, Virtual Console games, and so forth on the GamePad, but unfortunately we cannot accommodate those users' expectations."

- There are plans for a Wii U Virtual Console that WILL be compatible with the Wii U GamePad. Please look forward to it in the future.

Nintendo Network Premium

- For Premium Set buyers only

- Point service

- Make Nintendo Network ID, then login to find and user the service

- After logging in, you can see the points you have earned

- Buy with download card or download number

- Earn 10% back on purchases

- Earn back purchase points in ¥500 increments

- Points earned can be used with Wii U/3DS e-Shop, Wii Shopping Channel, DSi Shop

I'm pretty excited. Will I be able to transfer my perfectly manicured Mii from the 3DS onto the Wii U? They did also hint at a sort of Miiverse lite coming to 3DS as well, non? Would that replace Nintendo Letterbox? Letterbox would be better if things could be replied to, and if it worked without quitting out of everything else.

I'm hoping the memory nintendo has dedicated to the OS means everything is amazing and smooth and seamless.

Had a go on one in NintendoWorld over lunchtime yesterday and was good fun. Gamepad is surprisingly comfortable and sturdy but I have to say felt heavy after 15mins of play but I was standing so maybe that would make a difference. Only got to play NSMB and Rayman (no other demos available even though you could scroll through all the launch games) as they wouldn't put ZombieU on 'cos of the kids, thanks for that!

Went in to Game lunchtime. Couldn't find the WiiU section anywhere. So, went to check out the Vita section. That too seemed to have gone. On the way out I saw the WiiU and Vita sections almost completely hidden behind a GIGANTIC Black Ops.... thing. T-Shirts, headphones, keyrings, a million copies of the game all on this gigantic makeshift stand. Pretty sad sight (as far as first world issues go).

Anyone would think it was a new game in a massively popular game series that was out this week or something.

I read it that USB sticks would work, and flash memory meaning SD cards, wouldn't. Hopefully that's the case and I'll just get a 64GB when space starts running out.

Does anyone know if the WiiU supports transferring the disc data to the HD for faster loading?

People disappointed at the lack of ability to play Wii games on the pad, how do you think that would work?! The remote pointer is never gonna work on the pad so doing a half assed job of integrating it, without pointer controls, would give people more ammunition for derision. I can understand people wanting VC games on the pad but full blown Wii games or WiiWare games? Never gonna happen. And neither should it! Be grateful you can play them at all!
