Nintendo Wii U

Oh 'Mukkers, I don't know what to do.

My Wii U was acting up saying that the discs were dirty/ damaged - it went back to Nintendo and went up in smoke in the fire at the repair depot.

Brilliantly they got a new machine to me for Christmas Eve and restored my id - had to redownload loads of updates, software I'd bought off the e-shop (and I've realised that I didn't back up my Wii saves, so I've lost some bloody priceless gaming time there...)

Anyway, had a couple of issues of bad updates downloading which needed deleting off, which I've done then redownloaded.

So far I've played a bit of Lego Marvel Superheroes this morning, then tonight I've fired up Mario Kart. It told me the update was corrupted, needed deleting and redownloading...so set it to do that while I carried on playing. For some reason, despite copying over my save data and having the free dlc stuff, it didn't show any characters/ upgrades/ cars/ courses that I'd unlocked, but still showed my tally of achievement stamps. Not wanting to carry on playing if my original save could be restored with the update reinstalled, I went back to the main menu and installed the update.

When I tried Mario Kart again it got stuck on the Mario Kart 8 logo on black with the revving noises. I could switch the gamepad off, but when switched back on it would go to the same page. Couldn't return to the menu with it, couldn't turn off the machine at the power button so had to hard reset it by yanking out the power cable. Tried it again and still had the same issue.

So I figured I'd go back to Super Mario World 3D, which is another game which had a dirty/ damaged disc issue (despite the game being brand new in box, played twice, no marks on the disc) It went through to the world map, where it immediately said the disc was dirty/ damaged. I took out the disc, wiped the minor fingerprints on one edge of the disc, it started to read it, then still said it was dirty/ damaged.

I'm guessing I should try out the other game that I had an issue with (Sonic Racing Transformed) but I'm flummoxed as to why this is happening to my machine? Could it be some sort of interference from another machine - it's next to a PS3? It does feel hot, but there is ventilated space around it so I don't think that's an issue. And, well, I've had this machine two days and it was on a little bit over the last two evenings where I've run the updates - hardly suffering from Christmas burn out.

Is it possible my replacement machine has the same fault? Really don't know what to do and really gutted that I still have this issue - it's been since August/ September where I've been reluctant to play my Wii U should a game start failing to work.

:(

How do you know they've sent you a new machine? Sounds like it's the same one to me. It would be very bizarre to have the exact same problem on a different machine, I'd imagine.

I'm guessing that whoever wrote it was rounding the value (that, or it was written by someone who didn't realise that the cost of an item before VAT isn't calculated by taking 20% from the total value). It's definitely not accurate, as 8 points for every pound would have made the £35 game worth 280 points, not 290.

So I've added Sonic & Sega All Stars, Bayo 1& 2 and Tekken tag to my Wii U collection. Along with Smash, Hyrule, Shovel Knight, Rayman, 101 and Earthbound I should be sorted until Splatoon comes out. I've already decided that I will still be playing my Wii U when the Playstation 5 comes out.

Just picked up Pikmin 3 from eBay for £30, which seemed a decent deal given the way prices are heading (I saw someone speculatively list one for £200 the other day).

Anyone know if any other Wii U titles are heading out of print? I'm generally in no rush to acquire the catalogue, but I don't want to have to pay silly prices.

I have a feeling Hyrule Warriors will end up like this - which is why I was happy to get it for 26.85 from rakuten (via shopto) with the fiver off code they have at the moment (XMAS5 I think) even though I barely have time to play it right now.

Is there any enhancements playing Wii games on the Wii U? Currently thinking of picking a Wii U up and want to finish of Skyward Sword on it. Will I also loose my savings or can I transfer them over somehow? Guessing all my virtual console games I bought on the Wii will be gone too?

Running the old Wii through regular AV leads at 480i at the moment... LOL... its a grain fest especially coming from HD consoles.. :)

Argos are currently doing the basic pack for £144 which isn't bad I guess? Not fussed about the bits you get with the premium and well a 64GB USB should have things covered for memory anyway (also have a 1TB external USB HDD knocking about I could use too).

Just been messing around with the nippers Nintendo 2DS consoles they got for Xmas and made me remember why I played console games in the first place had a riot. Decided I want some Nintendo fun in my life.

You can transfer it all across using an SD card.

I think the upscaler is pretty good plus you can use the gamepad instead of the TV, though you'll still need a Wiimote.

Ah cheers! So I guess I just poke the current SD card I have in the Wii into the Wii and copy it across and I'm good to go?! Got lots of bits and pieces for the Wii so hoping I can use them...

Looking forward to the next instalment of Zelda next year... and playing the Wii games in a better res!

It's a bit fiddly with transfer channels to download for both consoles and lots of swapping of the SD card, but easy enough to do. You'll need to set aside a little bit of time to do it.
