Nintendo Wii U

Let's see how long it takes the 8GB to get used up.

I think it ends up being like 4GB or less.

I just whacked a 16GB flash drive I had lying around in the back. Works just fine. The only full retail game I own digitally is NSMB U and that's only because of the MK8 giveaway.

Physical copies can be resold, are usually cheaper and most of all the box art for Nintendo's games is lovely. Physical all the way.

All my download titles, apart from Monster Hunter, have cost me less than they would have on disc at the time. A combination of free game deals, buy Game A get Game B cheap offers, Game download codes, cheap eShop credit, and purchases with premium points vouchers.

And I could have gotten MH cheaper than retail if I'd waited a few months.

I don't think I saw anything in mine.

I had to go back and check myself (I knew about the offer, but only because of people talking about it on here), but there was a bit of paper in there with the manuals and stuff. Nothing on the box, which was an NSMBU one.

Except GC controllers, of course. Humbug.

I've not used up my 32gb yet, but obviously at some point I'm going to need an external drive. I grabbed a decent bundle offer, otherwise I'd have gone with a basic. The pad cradle is nice, but it's the storage that's the big difference and it's laughable in both.

Having said that, I've probably only got room on my PS4 for two more games, so the entire generation is fucked IMO.

I would love it if you could use the Smash Bros USB GC adapter to use 4 wavebirds on NSMBU/3D World. That would be awesome.

Thankfully I had and old hard drive kicking about. Stuck it in a caddy (99p on Amazon) and it works a treat.

250gb and I can't imagine ever filling it up (I manage my digital game and delete them when I'm done) as most run directly from the disc.

Perfect.

I've been getting hints leading me to believe there may be a Wii U on Santa's sleigh for me next week! So excited I could Wii!! Just wondering how essential are the pro controllers? See I don't know if I should order one before the postal cut off as the Wii U has 0 presence in our high street shops. There's also a chance that it might not be a Wii U of course

Postscript to my blurb above - read fatigue doesn't actually damage the flash, so after a format it'll be back to rights. So if the Wii U stores its saves in the main flash, not on the stick, then you're probably safeish using a USB stick, although you may have to reformat and redownload occasionally.

The risk comes in if either a) the games do store their saves on the stick, and the filesystem gets too corrupted to recover them (the frequently written save files should be fine, but that's useless if there's no filesystem to tell you where to find them) or b) corrupt data due to read fatigue results in a corrupt application state which then writes a corrupt save file to the Wii U.

Probably worth spending £40 on a hard drive, anyway.

Could I take out the 1tb sshd hybrid ive got in my ps4, whack it in a caddy and use that? What would I need to do to it first?

I know it's overkill but I'm thinking of selling my ps4 and would be left with the drive after putting the default one back in.

Should be fine but make sure you have a non usb powered caddy for power reasons. A full size 3.5 drive maybe a little too much for the usb 2's on the wiiu (shouldn't be but it's best to play safe.)

Is there, or would anyone be willing to create, a list of 'must have' classic games? I realised whilst playing smash Bros this morning that I'd never played Earthbound, so went and purchased it from the store. I've also never played Link to the Past. What other awesome classics are essential purchases?

Super Metroid and Mega Man X. Played both for the first time ever this year, both are awesome.

As mentioned already, Super Metroid is essential (even with the 50 Hz and French/German burned-in subtitles); aside from that you owe it to yourself to get Fire Emblem (GBA) if you haven't already played it.

I played both super Mario world and super metroid to completion back in the day. I remember my copy of metroid came in a huge box because it had a guide packed in with it. Great games both. The game I buy whenever it's released is super ghouls n ghosts. It was the second game I owned on my SNES (first was street fighter 2, obvs), and I adored it. Playing that hard as nails game through to completion (and I'm not talking about finishing it once through, I'm on about having to do the entire game twice in one sitting to actually finish it) aged 11 was truly something special. As if I have time for such things these days

A couple of days ago I bought Super Mario Bros U, even though I don't own a Wii U.

Thus begins a slippery slope.

I'm just filling my basket online... Wii U Mario Kart bundle... Bayonetta 2... all I've got to do is click CHECKOUT...

Kirby's Epic yarn is superb! I bought it secondhand in Game last year for £9.99 or something, and what a bargain that was!
