Nintendo Wii U

My only gripe so far is the pro pad... By all accounts it's a lovely piece of kit (and no need to plug it into a Wiimote, like that was ever a good idea), but the position of the main face buttons is just wrong! My thumb naturally rests on X and A, rather than Y and B, so for example jumping I'm Bayonetta (on B) just feels wrong.

Agreed - It's really odd though, because with the Gamepad it felt like I was cramping my hands to use B/A for MK8, so I ended up defaulting to B/Y, while the Pro Pad is completely different. Then again, the Gamepad also has the issue of the L/R bumpers being an utter shit to use. My fingers just tend to rest on ZL/ZR, and you can't roll your fingers to the bumpers without it being awkward. On the Pro, it's a cinch.

It also turns out that the button placement on the Pro Pad is bananas if you want to play GC games via Nintendon't - But it turns out you can just hit select and it arranges the buttons in a more natural configuration (Y=B, B=A, A=X and X=Y). It's time to test this extensively by playing Phantasy Star Online for the next hundred hours. Again.

Is it just me or is NSMB U incredibly difficult? I die all the time and the save system is complete crap.

Also my Controller Pro from Nippon Yasan has arrived in the UK! Exciting.

It's not incredibly difficult until long after you finished the main game - my 8 year old at the time finished it should you need motivation ;)

The save system is complete crap as you say, no defending that one!

Once it's hacked it's hacked. Nintendo don't seem to care about Wii/vWii modding at this point though.

It's the "at this point" that worries me, though. All it'll take is for someone to find a way to boot unsigned code on the Wii U via an exploit in the hacked vWii, and they'll clamp down on it.

I think I'll just wait a few years until software updates stop, then take a look.

Sorry if this has been done to death, but as a new buyer should I go Premium or Basic?

Even though the Premium is 32Gb, will I likely need an extra eternal HDD anyway if I plan to DL more than a few games?

Have people found the other plastic bits and bobs in the Premium pack worth the extra - charging stand for gamepad etc?

And, also, is the basic available in black, or only white?

Ta.

I found it very difficult when I played it and Luigi U through to completion with a friend. That said, it's fantastic fun.

Luigi U is a lot harder, I only had a quick go of that but there were many deaths on the first couple of levels. Modern gaming has made me soft.

To the best of my knowledge, Basic is white only, Premium is black only.

I have a premium, and while I haven't used the internal storage at all really (bar downloading Wind Waker HD for free), the other bits are handy - I have a lot of Wii games and existing wiimotes, so I use the sensor bar a lot, and I can't imagine not having the charging stand. The other stand has been handy occasionally, for balancing the gamepad on my legs while using it as a screen, but it's the least essential of the extras.

I think the Premium would be a bit more Premium if it came with a Pro controller, to be honest.

The vWii is sandboxed so that's unlikely, but fair enough.

Hmmm. What's the difference with the Premium? What's the extra memory for?

Different colour

Larger internal storage (32GB)

Sensor Bar

Charge Cradle, Gamepad Stand, Console stand

Nintendo Network Premium Membership (£5 back for every £50 spent in the eShop - until the end of Dec 2014)

The Network Premium was the big thing IMO - if you were intending to buy digital content (either full retail or indie eShop) it could quickly mount up to a decent return (especially since you got full points for the MK8 freebie as well). Buying now, I'd go with a basic then pick up an external HD and a charge cradle separately.

But you don't install games right, so the internal storage is just for downloading games from Nintendos bizarre store isn't it?

You don't install games (apart from Watch Dogs) no - the storage is for updates and downloaded retail, eShop, or VC games.

No idea what you mean by 'bizarre store' - what's 'bizarre' about it?

The store is like (a far smaller) version of the other consoles' stores - so it includes full retail games (like Bayonetta) as well as little indie efforts. And of course the Virtual Console stuff, but that's all pretty tiny, being SNES, GBA and NES based.

Perhaps more significantly, the system likes to load itself and its games up with patches, too. On the basic, having two demos on it (Bayonetta and Wonderful 101) was enough that Hyrule Warriors' most recent patch couldn't download, needing as it did 600+ mb to install. A few other games with large patches and you'd need extra storage even without ever downloading any full games or demos. If you have a Premium you'd probably be able to ignore the issue.

On the other hand, if you were to plan on downloading a fair portion of your games, then suddenly the Premium becomes (confusingly) less useful, as it's likely to run out of space pretty quickly anyway when used that way, meaning you'd need an external drive either way.

What's the quality of said games?

Same as all other games - some are great, some are shit. There are gems and there are turds.

Is it worth spending for the bigger memory? How does it work with external memory?

As I just said, if I was buying now I'd buy a basic then add an external HD and charging stand separately. Something like:

Basic Pack with Smash Bros: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00P68FXY4

External HD: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008PABFX8

Charge Stand: http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B009ACAM0C

Indeed, you could have to spend up to twenty pounds to get a more than handily sized hard drive.

edit: On the premium I've got this all installed with space to spare:

Mario Kart 8

Pikmin 3

Wind Waker HD

Nintendo Land

Wii Sports Club Tennis

Wii Sports Club Bowling

Wii Fit U

Pullblox World

Super Mario Bros 3

So you don't necessarily need anything enormous if you want more, it's only really some third party games that take up a sizeable amount of HD space.
