Nintendo Wii U

Spent a little while transferring all my Wii stuff over to the WiiU yesterday. Took a while, but it was pretty straightforward and the Pikmin carrying over the data was pretty charming.

However...

"The WiiU controller cannot be used with Wii software"

Why the fuck not?! I was really looking forward to playing F-Zero X on the WiiU pad.

Because the vWii can't know what the Wii gamepad is. The Wii U effectively has a Wii inside, and switches to that when in Wii mode. Since a Wii can't comprehend what a Wii U gamepad is, it doesn't work.

The wrapper could still support it though, Nintendo just choose not to because they're cheap and this will sell more accessories.

All they'd need to do is update the virtual console games to recognise the WiiU controller as a Classic Controller being connected, surely?

They'd have to do something with the Wii firmware to let it acknowledge WiiU peripherals, and then there're the odd WiiWare titles which wouldn't work properly anyway, due to lack of analogue triggers.

I don't think it's as simple as it sounds or else they would have bolted it in with the (partial) gamepad support update.

Ah well, it just seems a shame when something like Mario 64 or whatever uses the classic controller which is practically identical to the WiiU pad in terms of sticks and buttons.

If I'd been able to just boot up an N64 game on the WiiU pad then I probably would. As it stands, digging out a Wii remote plus classic controller, and propping up the WiiU pad somewhere to see the screen? Not gonna happen. Shame.

If the HDD doesn't have a power supply, you'll need a Y cable so that it can draw power from another USB port. The Wii U USB ports don't give out as much power for whatever reason.

You can't set separate save locations for games and saves. The Wii U just dumps everything on the HDD automatically.

The Wii U pod in Game in Norwich was playing Hyrule Warriors today. There was a queue of people to have a go.

Some driving game on the Xbone was unused.

The PS4 appeared to be broken.

The Wii U pod in the big Game in Hull is always busy, there is even a rather large section in the store dedicated to Nintendo.

Decided to sell my (second) Wii U. Not gonna be a popular post, but since I don't play single player stuff, I'm left with MK8 (my friend's would get destroyed), Wii Party U (worse than the first) and Nintendoland (awesome) with nothing else on the horizon of interest. For local multiplayer it seems like the indie scene is where a lot of the excitement is at, shame that Nintendo haven't made more inroads there. Tower fall alone is more interesting to me than anything else right now. Interested in seeing what the steam box is all about before deciding on that or ps4.

Sorry Wii U, you were lovely and completing 3d world and Nintendoland Pikmin with my girlfriend will live long in the memory!

FWIW, I'm thinking about packing away my Wii U until the next Zelda game, or anything else of interest, gets released. The DLC tracks for Mario Kart 8 didn't pull me back for more than a few more plays, I passed Monster Hunter 3U onto someone else as I couldn't read the text, and Super Smash Bros is out next week but I've never liked any of that button-mashing madness. I haven't been very much impressed by the Wii U, sadly.

I love my wii u but wouldn't have it as my main console, it is great after loads of shoot man stuff or sore driving games to just play bright fun games that are just polished so well - it reminds me how much fun gaming can be outside the drive for realism and the brown palette!
