Link to the Past, Wind Waker HD*. What do you mean by you like RPGs though? I guess Zelda games are more action adventures than RPGs as such.

* LttP is SNES era, Wind Waker HD is a Gamecube update and looks lovely. Both work on pad for off screen play.

Wind Waker is probably the ideal my first Zelda - effortlessly charming, not too tricky, about the right length with the tri force quest padding trimmed and utterly stunning to look at particularly in the remastered version.

I'd argue the Zelda games are RPGs - just ones that streamline most of the role playing out so you are just left with a quest, a world to explore and dungeons.

I don't suppose anyone knows of a site with an up to date list of all titles that allow Off TV play? There is a Wiki page which is sort of what I'm after but, as it doesn't show any games that aren't compatible, I don't know if the others genuinely aren't or if the page hasn't been updated. It doesn't have many eShop titles either, so I don't know if the likes of Pullblox World, Scram Kitty, Stealth Inc 2, etc. would work.

I've never played a Zelda game but I like RPGs. I have a Wii U, where should I start? I assume there is some VC Zelda game I should begin with. It would help if I could play on the game pad as well.

I'd say LttP given it's my second favourite game of all time. The game is perfectly designed in all aspects, and I'd love to hear what a new set of eyes thinks of it.

Wind Waker is great, on all accounts, however I'd never change 'my first Zelda' if I could rewind the clock. All Zelda games should be compared to LttP in my opinion, and perhaps Ocarina of Time too for 3D.

Majora's Mask trumps Ocarina in a lot of departments but Ocarina is still the benchmark for 3D Zelda. although this is a different discussion entirely.

LttP was my first Zelda game, and I love it to pieces.

Admittedly, I first played it with the family when I was six, and we didn't really know what we were doing. We never even went into the desert dungeon, despite opening the path to do so. I knew the overworld like the back of my hand and just liked to explore. I finally completed it for the first time last year, and I still remembered pretty much everything about (the first chunk of) it. That being said, I find the first half of the game substantially better than the second (a lot of that is down to the nostalgia though), and I just love running around the world doing nothing in particular. Great looking game with fantastic music, too.

It also came with an amazing booklet giving tips from Sahasrahala (sp?) for anyone stuck in the game, it was lovely.

Just thinking about it makes me want to start A Link Between Worlds, though I didn't want to play it until I finish Skyward Sword, which I haven't started either.

Another option is to pick up Skyward Sword or Twilight Princess on the Wii and play them on the Wii U. You could always get Ocarina of Time on the Virtual Console, though LttP or Wind Waker are probably better for first time players.

Zelda: Twilight Princess was my first 3D Zelda, and the first I ever beat, and I love it too. I've been playing Hyrule Warriors recently, and it has put me in a very Zelda-y mood, so I want to play this again too. With the gold Zelda remote, obviously.

Really connected with twilight princess...loved it. I thought it did the dual world thing well.

Lttp will always be special....best opening 20 mins of any game IMO.

Oot is probably the definitive Zelda though.....3ds version all the way.

Pullblox does, and I'd be astounded if Stealth Inc 2 doesn't.

I love lttp, it was such a great game. However, I started off with the GB Zelda. It holds many great memories, and i love that one too. So it's quite tricky to decide (for me personally) what my favorite one was. Then you have ocarina which holds good memories too and also for being the first 3d zelda.

I was thinking, with games where Amiibo simply unlock content as a one off thing, like the mii costumes in Mario Kart, would it be possible to load up a backpack with a battery and a Wii and go around pushing the pad against Amiibo in a shop? You'd probably have to squash the pack a bit, and I doubt the staff would be too impressed, but I bet someone will try it. It'd be even easier with an Amiibo enabled 3ds.

Why the fuck would you go to all that trouble when you could just buy one for a tenner?

Because it would cost a lot more than a tenner to buy them all? I would never do this personally, having the physical figure for my shelf is the main attraction, I was just wondering if it would be possible.

Yeah, that's how they work for smash, but the same Amiibos can be used for costume unlocks in MK 8, presumably the Link one will do something similar in Hyrule Warriors. I think we'll see a pattern of 'flagship' amiibo games where you write data to them and they make a difference to the game, and then bonus uses for largely cosmetic unlocks in other games. IIRC the writable data chip in an NFC device is tiny, so I doubt we'll see multiple games saving complex profiles to one amiibo.

I think the registration process is going to be a lot more than just scanning the amiibo.

Each one is "locked" to a Mii, meaning if you did manage to activate it through nefarious ways, I'm guessing it would come up as being already locked to a Mii.

Also killing off used sales. Which seems to be a big problem with the amount of Disney and Sklyanders in CEX....

It looks like our Wii U disc drive is packing in. It now won't read several perfectly clean discs.

Looking at the iFixIt teardown, the drive is easy to replace, so I'll try getting a replacement. I've not been able to find specific reference to a manufacturer or model code of drive that I need to get. Does anyone know more about this?

They probably won't even acknowledge the console exists, for a start. It was never officially launched here (Singapore).

The local distributor is absolutely hopeless. Be prepared to get frustrated if you're thinking of getting in touch with them. I phoned them for something before and they slammed the phone down on me, I tried phoning back and they'd purposely left the phone off the hook.
