Nintendo Wii U

Pfft, please. I know you're doing your defence force thing here, but to anyone who's played it who's remotely been into console FPS over the last generation, it plays a lot differently to anything that's been popular recently (COD, BF etc).

I want the Wii U to do well, which right now means continue to sell in some numbers. I'll be buying one for Mario Kart 8, or before if there is a good price on one somewhere, as I am looking forward to playing 3D Mario too.

I don't see what being part of the Street Fighter defense force has to do with thinking Titanfall looks dull. For balance, I think CoD, Battlefield and Killzone all look exactly the same too. Halo looks different and plays differently too but I've found those boring since Halo 2. I've also always been pretty disinterested in big robots (Cybernator is an exception. And Cyberbots). Still, It would be great if Nintendo could get some more games like that onto Wii U all the same, to broaden folks' options.

I am quite excited about the fact NES Remix 2 allows sharing of videos of your performance with other players despite the fact the two other new consoles on the market allow that as standard in games which aren't 30 years old.

EDIT: What the buns is up with quoting?

Not that anyone probably cares that much - but apparently Donkey Kong is really really good. 10/10 in Destructoid. 9/10 from IGN.

It's not that good :P

It feels like new super mario 2, with the devs being on autopilot and simply churning out a good game. It's a Perfectly fun platformer, but it pales in comparison to super mario 3d world. It does look lovely mind. I'm sure you'll love playing it with your little un though :)

So it's really nothing to do with Titanfall looking dull, it's just that you don't like those sorts of games, which is absolutely fine by me - but your argument is strange in a thread where the main publisher pretty much spits out the same old thing over and over. Or at least appears to do so if you've never played their stuff.

I was responding directly to someone saying that Nintendo should [have] money-hatted Titanfall. My argument was that it's not interesting or new enough to convince people to invest in Nintendo's failing machine. Just as Nintendo's own games weren't.

So what would you propose they do? Go quietly into the night?

Titanfall is exactly the sort of game that'll shift boxes - It's by the COD guys, it plays fantastically (if you're into that sort of thing, ahem) and would have provided an absolutely stellar FPS on the console. As much as people on here like to complain about the colour brown or shooting a weapon that goes bang, this is the exact sort of game that the allegedly dull and tasteless masses enjoy.

The much maligned Bone should and likely will do gangbusters because of the title - and deservedly so. It's ace.

But the prevailing opinion seems to be that if Nintendo's increasingly irrelevant software (making no comments about it's quality, simply that it no longer captures hearts and minds like it once did) isn't enough to sell then nothing will, so we'll do without it, thankyou. It's such a ridiculous position to take, and it just smacks of people burying their heads in the sand.

They should get more games from third parties in general. Spending a load of money on exclusivity for something like Titanfall would be a waste when there's more important work to be done in convincing other developers (and consumers) that the Wii U is a platform worth investing in.

It is mate, but i think you are right, it's not going to sell units, as there are far better platformers on the system already.

I assume you're just referring to the Mario games because Rayman Legends is the most overhyped style over substance platformer I've played in a long time.

All well and good, but unless they shift boxes they're in for an uphill struggle convincing publishers to take a risk on the console. Perhaps spending a bit of that gargantuan warchest we're always hearing about and getting something hyped as a must-have onto the console will make people look at it. Their current strategy isn't working, and they need to try something else.

The gate is open and the Titanhorse has of course bolted, but the concept remains sound as far as I'm concerned. They need something that people are going to respond to "Well, I'm going to have to get a Wii for that", rather than "I'll get it on my next gen console, what's a WiiU. Mario again?".

Pffft. A dig at Rayman, completely out of left field! What does it matter what platformer he's talking about?

I think we're just saying the same thing but you like Titanfall and I don't*.

*Not played it.

If I've understood you correctly (apologies if I haven't), you're recommending the more general recruitment of third parties, which is what they're doing at the moment (without much success). I think they need to slap a whole bunch of money on the table and buy a show-stopper that'll have people who wouldn't ordinarily have any need of a WiiU going out to buy one.

I guess we were saying much the same thing, but I'm not convinced the slow, diplomatic approach is working for them.

Maybe a big showstopper would be a good idea. It certainly wouldn't be a bad thing. Another big thing would be to improve the ease of development on the system since the tales of developers waiting on back and forth emails across time-zones for answers to development tool questions sound like a huge turnoff. Having some big titles here and there boost sales of the system might not bring developers on board if they've had a bad experience like that.

Maybe Nintendo should also have a western studio of their own as well-versed in their hardware and tools as the teams back in Japan and have them focus on relationships with other developers?

They are doomed on the third party front. They needed to make sure they supported all the major engines as part of the design of the console. Too late now. Maybe giving up a lot of control and or licensing revenue might get people interested.

Only alternative I can see is to buy or start studios and plug the gaps in the release schedule. It might entail more losses and shit sales while they build brands. But it'd set them up for the next round / if they go third party.

I'd buy Sega Sammy for a start and farm out the franchises for a start - there's a lot of stuff there they dont have - beaten ups, racing games, sports, "adult" adventures etc.

Adult adventures. Maybe that's it! They could sign up James Deen for a new series of interactive stories controlled by touch on the gamepad.

So reading that back makes clear I am idiot. Dur.

Anuwau I'd buy that as long as it had haptic feedback.

Which one?

Get Super Mario 3D World, The Wonderful 101, Wind Waker HD, Lego City Undercover, Nintendoland (if you are likely to play it with friends), NES Remix and ZombiU.

They'll keep you busy for a while :)

Also, if the reviews are anything to go by then Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a great buy.
