Nintendo Wii U

Started going for the platinum medals on the Pikmin 3 coop mode. The mission mode is good enough for a game itself, its a slice of RTS-Lite* genius.

*Which is probably slightly unfair as the micro-management needed to nail the high scores is as impressive as many other RTS games.

I was so impressed by 3D World on the gamepad in Smyths today that at £180 I'm considering a Wii U despite the fact it's dead in the water.

Get it, you win either way. Dead in the water - great retro collectible. Gets a change in sales fortunes - more great Nintendo games.

Donkey kong this month, Mariokart in May and god knows what else is to come. Buy it, play it, Love it. Most people who get one end up loving it.

Oh and the Wonderful 101 of course.

Smash Bros games are amazing. There's a pretty low barrier to entry so pretty much anyone can pick up a controller and jump around getting a kill here and there, even against more experienced players. It's the one game everyone who'd come round would love to play; even more so than Mario Kart.

Plus it has Captain Falcon in it; the most fabulous man in the entire galaxy.

The *only* good thing that Nintendo can take from this is that currently, particularly amongst gaming enthusiasts, most people don't know the WiiU exists. This is something that can be fixed. It would be worse if the WiiU was well known but a toxic platform that people just knew they didn't want.

The issue will be when and how Nintendo choose to market it. Mario Kart release I imagine.

If it's dead in the water then I'll pick it up when it's dead cheap. Like being flogged off in stores to clear stock. There's no rush.

One of the reasons I jumped in and bought one at the weekend is because I know this won't work out. The original Wii can be had pretty cheaply now (I think £80 ish new?) but it'd be tough I think to get hold of all the games I'd want for it cheap too. First party titles are still expensive even on the original Wii, and anyway there is no stock in most shops to flog off cheap. I doubt I'd pay much less for Mario 3d world etc in 12 months than I would today, without getting lucky and buying from the forum or eBay or something.

So anyway, I jumped in. Nintendoland last night with my 3 and 6 year old was magical, and ZombiU made a nice first impression too (after kids in bed obviously).

It's the elitist community for Smash Bros that turns the fun into horrible shit.

I'm sure you've heard it before. Final Destination. No weapons/items. Everyone using Fox or one other character.

Why on earth turn the game into that? Fuck off.

Which tournaments?

If you want to play in a tournament with other rules, why not organise your own? A beneficial side effect of this would be that you wouldn't have as much time to posts idiotic videos on here.

Ah, so you defend/love the Final Destination players. You know they complain that even Final Destination 'isn't straight enough'?

Ha!

I'm sure there's free for all/normal rule-style out there too. It just boggles the mind as to why and how the above style of play could be in any way fun.

In. Any. Way.

There is a fix for that, if you know for certain you want the games you do and will be getting the hardware at some point, just buy the rare games while they are in circulation (timing risks aside), and going off the GameCube pricing, keep them in their shrinkwrap and flog them on eBay for more than you might have paid for them at some point in the future in the eventuality you don't buy the hardware, it just ties up some money, but you can always look upon it as a collectable item, certain Japanese developed games in various niches do hold up remarkably well in value, the lack of supply helps. If you just want the disc to play the game as cheaply as possible, 2nd hand is the way to go.

The price it is worth paying for the hardware depends on your personal threshold of how much of a premium you think proprietary hardware is worth just to play a few games, £30-£50+ per game surcharge is a bit too much for my tastes.

I bought a couple of Xboxes when Argos were dumping them for stupid cheap, all the included games apart from Halo 2 are still in their shrinkwrap as not my tastes, and now pretty much worthless anyway.
