Nintendo Wii U

I managed to play a bit of pikmin 3 last night (after a half-hour update for it, christ, seriously?!)

I'm sure once I get used to it, it'll be fine, but I'd imagine that buying a new games console just isn't as fun as it used to be. A long process of setting up, checking out all the extra features that I don't need, don't see the appeal of, or already have alternatives to... and then finally, once I get to play a game, I see that it looks acceptable, maybe something cool gets added, but no great leap forward like we used to get with a new generation.

The updates crap is horrible on everything that isn't a PC, for sure.

Nah, PC updates can also be big and time consuming even though Steam applies them automatically. I think the Xbox 360 nailed it with updates. Small files, quick download and installation, minimal fuss. On PS+ and the like it works nice because it's done automatically at night, but it's a bit dumb you need to pay for a service that should really be just a standard feature (especially because the PSN update system is shit by default).

Dunno about Wii U, it downloads it automatically? First time setup was a bit shit when I got mine last Christmas due to the Nintendo Network being down because all 3 people who bought a Wii U turned it on at the same time, but once that was out of the way it's been pretty smooth sailing.

All the updates download in the background. And if you've disabled that option, you can still play without the update.

But who would play without the update? The initial thought would no doubt be 'ah, I bet it'll play better. I guess I should wait'.

Steam's updates are annoying too, I meant more along the side of OS updates for the PC/Mac where you NEED to get them to avoid viruses, and these days they thankfully don't hop on the task bar telling you it'll restart automatically. Still, I get your point, still pretty much the same annoying thing depending on the day.

The WiiU auto-updates now - the only thing that happens is that when you start a new game, it installs the update - but at least it's already downloaded for you. It's much more stable with routers now and MiiVerse and screenshots and stuff are fun.

But on day 1 of WiiU release - it was horrible.

Why is it that the Vita is the only system (maybe iOS too) that has decent software patch notes?

The Wii U doesn't say anything, obviously the 360 and PS3 didn't. Even Steam is fairly rubbish unless you look at the developer's website. But on the Vita you can see a historical list of each update and what it affected.

Yes Scott even when it's downloaded it'll take 5mins to install in some cases regardless.

Sounds like yours is faulty. I can't remember an update installation which took more than 30 seconds. The download took several years, but installation is quick.

To clarify, my half-hour update was for pikmin3, not for a system thing. Oddly, as I was typing this, the wii U's light turned from red to orange, and then my TV switched inputs from HDMI1 (pc) to HDMI2(wiiU). Not had that happen with another console before.

Also, what does the white light mean? Just that there's a disc in the drive?

I noticed that you can on the PS4 too. Though I think maybe it only shows the notes for the last update, not the whole history.

When its orange it means its either checking for updates in low power mode, or downloading and yes the white light is just to tell you there is a disc in the drive which is hugely annoying when the unit is in the bed room as its a rather bright light too.
