Nintendo Wii U

DK looks totally uninspired to me. It's obviously well made but nothing new or especially interesting.

It's weird because I've just played through Donkey Kong Country Returns on the 3DS (the first time I've played it) and I thought it was brilliant. Really great level design, loads of imagination, perfectly pitched difficulty level, the works. I'd recommend it highly.

But Tropical Freeze looks... exactly the same. Like an expansion pack or something. I'm really glad I played DKCR but I don't particularly want to play the same thing all over again.

Just like New Mario 2/Wii/U

What great expansion packs! Such wow! Such sarcasm from self.

It would be fine if it were a series newly introduced this gen (eg: metroid prime + 2 sequels), it's not okay to do sequels with very close similarity gameplay-wise to titles of the series near-20 years ago, unless it's a remake. At that point simply add new levels on top of the remake.

But everyone bought the Mario ones, of course.

And Tropical Freeze is only the second DKCR game in 17 years and a sequel to a game originally release four years ago. Does the 3DS port make everyone think the franchise has been flogged to death just because everyone was playing it so recently?

I don't think it's been flogged to death. I just think Tropical Freeze looks really uninspired. The Wii game was really good and felt fresh.

This doesn't seem to have any stand out new features or even visuals. I suppose it has Scrooge McKong but that's not doing it for me.

I guess it's reasonable to say NSMB is a fairly conservative update too. I think Mario gets away with it (for me) by being a much more sophisticated game. The Donky Kong games are much simpler - more like old fashioned coin-ops. So there's not that much you can do with the mechanics.

I'd like to see more movement and dynamism in the environments and more routes through the levels. NSMBU and Rayman are very much A to B type games with the occasional alternative route. From what I've read, this one has much more secrets, alternative exists and hidden paths and stuff.

Oh, fuck off, Neg. Seriously. You can apply that logic to nearly every single sequel out there. It's just iterative design over a few years. It's hardly COD or Assassin's Creed levels of milking.

It's just my opinion, even in Sonic Generations as good as it was I dislike it for relying on the past heavily.

For me the main problem is its a sequel that no one asked for. Everyone loved DCKR but i don't think anyone was clamouring for more, having been totally satisfied with the original. It doesn't help though that it doesn't feel fresh like you say, as it really does look like more of the same with no new twists or gimics besides some evolution of the core game play.

I'm in the same boat with the new donkey kong. Enjoyed the wii game but by the end of it i was getting a bit bored and havent gone back since. I'm sure the new one wll be decent but i'm not quite sure i'll buy it (at least for a while anyway).

I do agree with this - perhaps it's because I'm playing it on the 3DS and not the Wii, but I'm looking forward to a big screen HD adventure. Maybe if I'd played the Wii one, I wouldn't be so fussed. I have to admit, until I played DKCR on 3DS, I didn't give a toss about Tropical Freeze

My local Tesco had a load of Wii and Wii U games discounted right down.

I picked up Pikmin 3 for £3.75. Sae another bloke with Skyward Sword and New Super Mario Bros. wii for the same price. Surely it's a bugger up?

what does that mean for Nintendo, do they still make money from the game sales?

There's some dumping going on. Dutch branche of Dixons is dumping loads of older Wii U title for €2.50(!) or €5.00 - even Nintendoland is now €5. Unfortunately there were only 2 stores stocking it, none nearby.

Reminds me of what happened to the GameCube here in PAL territories, many chains sold off their inventories of the format just after the one year mark. Almost certainly worse in the Wii U's case.

It'll be amazing if Nintendo don't take note that every time the shops discount them even by £20 / £30 they fly off the shelves. Oh hang on it's Nintendo so no it wont (madness).

Do they actually fly off shelves, though?

I've been skim reading the threads on HUKD and while they've got a lot of heat, I've yet to actually see more than two people say they've bought one. Everyone else is going on about how they're amazing or the worst thing ever and how they'll buy one when they're £1.79.

And Argos seem to have 0 for in store collection and yet haven't sold out yet.

On Amazon:

Nintendo Wii U Premium

Sales rank: 15 (was 535)

up 3466%

ranked even higher earlier.

I was quite impressed with that, except I just checked and the Dualshock 4 is at number 9 and I can't imagine people are exactly buying that in droves so once again I'm not sure if how many they've sold is that amazing.

Chart Track don't do hardware, do they?
