Wii U Outsells Xbox One The Week Before Christmas According To VGChartz

http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2013/12/31/wii-u-outsells-xbox-one-the-week-before-christmas-according-to-vgchartz/

We’ll start with the obligatory caveat: VGChartz is a controversial website. Any sales numbers taken from the site should, for a variety of reasons, be taken with a grain of salt. The numbers presented below should be viewed as estimates rather than hard data.

That being said, VGChartz’ weekly global sales figures for the week ending Dec. 21st place Nintendo’s Wii U one spot ahead of Microsoft’s Xbox One. The Wii U sold 319,860 units globally according to VGChartz, while the Xbox One sold just 307,366.

Notably, the Xbox One is still not for sale in Japan. But Microsoft has never mounted much of a threat in that region. (According to the below chart, the PSP sold nearly 9,000 units in Japan, while the Xbox 360 sold a paltry 688, lower than any other system currently for sale in the region. There is little reason to believe the Xbox One will change this.)

Unexpectedly, I find myself with a little disposable income come the end of the month. I was going to go the PS4 path in the near future but given the lack of decent titles, and perhaps because it's Christmas and Mario always seems great around this time of year, I'm now thinking of going WiiU instead. Are there any unmissable sales / bundles out there at the moment? Apologies if this is a lazy post but I just haven't been following the thread.

So my 6 year old figured Miiverse out today, got her first Yeah! from someone and spent ages looking for people asking questions on the Pokemon Rumble U community because she wanted to help them out. Almost died of a proud/cute attack when she showed me some of her Pokemon posts

You done a good one

cool

My five year old loves posting up his drawings. It really is great that there is somewhere like that online that kids can be reasonably safe to post away.

Aye, but that takes very healthy Japanese sales into account. It's still lagging behind elsewhere sadly.

I find it hard to feel sad about the sales lagging outside of Japan. If the roots are strong it is always going to bear fruit, the kind of fruit that only grows on Nintendo trees.

On Monday evening the wife and I had a few friends over for food, drink and some Wii U multiplayer action. This was the first time I'd had more than 1 player on the system, so wasn't really sure what games would be of note and what games could be quickly passed by.

We started off with Nintendoland. This was a package I'd probably used for an hour at most since getting the system back in June, but after reading posts from people on here saying how good the multiplayer games were I thought it had to be worth a go. Well, I was not disappointed. We didn't get on to the competitive multiplayer games, but Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion and Mario Chase were absolutely amazing. The wife had the pad on all three of the games, and she really got into the ghost role on Luigi's Mansion - even making weird ghost noises when she'd caught one of us. It actually made us jump.

If you're able to rope a few friends around and have enough controllers then these three mini games will give you hours of fun.

We then moved on to Mario 3D Worlds, and I must say that it was complete chaos, but not in a good way. Levels weren't explored, they were rushed through, and it was very easy to lose track of where your character was. I know most of the magazines have been saying the game feels like it's been designed for multiplayer, but I still prefer the single player version of it.

Finally, we went on to Rayman. This is a big favourite of the wife's so she was keen to see what it played like with three extra players. Well, the general view from everyone present was that it was like Mario - just too chaotic to be fun.

While Mario and Rayman didn't go down too well in the Hazelby household the response from Nintendoland was really positive. The wife's already asking if we can have another multiplayer night on this in the next month or two.

3D World is utter chaos with four people. I'm yet to try it with anyone who really knows what they're doing but me and the kids have gotten used to slowly traversing the levels three player and searching them properly. They do have to occasionally go into the bubbles or pick each other up, but I can see it being amazing with 4 properly experienced players.

I think the main problem was the sheer speed that each character can move around at, and that the viewpoint could have done with being zoomed-out more so the visible play area was bigger.

Playing Mario 3D Worlds did get me thinking, though. A 4-player, revamped version of Escape From The Planet of The Robot Monsters would be ace using the 3D Worlds engine as everything in the original arcade of EFTPOTRM moves at a more sedate pace.

I can wish!

I wasn't fussed with it being offline to start with but actually it would be pretty amazing with online multiplayer and having an entire screen each without this bubble box thing happening constantly.

Well finally got round to setting up my Wii U tonight and i'm impressed. It's bizarre really, you can get a decent bundle for £250 with a few games and I almost feeling guilty about it. The Wii U gamepad seems really well made, it's going to be strange getting used to it but i'm sure I will start to enjoy using it. I can't wait to start Lego City Undercover!
