Good luck getting all the wire ties back on so as not to ruin your brat's unboxing video.

What sort of animal removes the wire ties while attempting a subtle update?! Mine's fully intact, the cables and stuff are back in the right place, no fingerprints on the controler and even that weirdly fragile wrapping on the machine is in place. It's so good, it'd probably fool myself.

Boy, I'm going to love opening this for the first time on Xmas day!

It's shit. You either run fast and miss everything or go slow and miss the main gimmick.

Absolutely this. The Running/musical levels on Rayman Legends are a thousand times better by comparison.

Having to memorise an entire level to complete it a a decent pace is just shit.

Go back and play the actual game, Pickford.

Marble Zone will put you to sleep at the lack of BLAST PROCESSING SPEED, I promise.

I always forget to mention this, when you go on about asset reuse i always mean to bring up sonic games esp 1 as not only does it asset release over the 3 'world' levels the actual levels are the bloody same.

No variety like Mario in sonic games, wanky platforming but they are fun - well the MD ones anyway.

You do realise how much asset reuse there is throughout Super Mario Bros 1, right?

And then they released it again and called it a sequel.

What's the zone in sonic 1 where to defeat the boss you have to make a series of pixel perfect jumps past spikes chasing robotnik as water rises? It's the boss level but he appears immediately.

It doesn't require to be pixel perfect, but you are referring to the Labyrinth Zone boss :) :

The Mega Drive Sonic games aren't platformers, they're time attack games with a few objectives.

The Master System/Game Gear Sonic titles are great platformers.

The 3D ones are turd. All Sega's talent has either pissed off or done too much acid for them to recapture the old magic.

Exactly. Even when I had it for the game Gear, I tried to like it. Then realised it wasn't that fun.

Go really fast. Have no control. Hit spike that you didn't see. Lose rings.

Wash and repeat.

Zool was better (watch the negs go up).

It was sponsored by chuppa Chups.

Really? The whole reason I liked sonic on the game gear (the first game) was that it was mainly platforming compared to dashing around at high speeds. It's a awesome little platformer! Didn't like the megadrive sonic as much, although sonic 2 isn't bad.

regarding 3d sonics - I thought Sonic Adventure 2 was really good. Not quite sure i'd like it as much going back to it now though. I wouldn't say many other sonic games grab me though, certainly not in the same league as the mario titles anyway.

SA1 and 2 are generally okay, they have their own faults and it's a little unfair comparing them to 2D, and sure they don't stand up to 3D Mario, but they were still above average and pretty awesome for the time (Dreamcast). It's just that when things went downhill people like to proclaim things like 'it's Sonics friends fault!' or 'It's not fast enough!' and so on. Yes Heroes onwards was downhill, but the problems can't be explained in a few words like some fans think they can.

Yuji Naka left for Prope during 06's development, I have to wonder how much he was actually involved in it before jumping ship. (IE is he to blame for most of that mess or not) Heroes tried to be faithful to classic era in design but it just wasn't as fun as it could have been gameplay-wise. The idea of having to hit badniks more then once TO PROGRESS was a horrible idea that still exists even today in parts of Lost World.

Guys, Sonic wasn't just about running around at high speed. If you were doing this all the time you were doing it wrong. That's what it's all about now, of course, and it's why they've been mostly shit since 1994.

The originals were full of signposting: if there was a steep drop to run down it usually chucks you up at the end so you can land safely, out of harms way. Or there's a rock to slow you down, or an enemy gives you enough notice that it's there so you can deal with it. You're never thrown into bottomless pits and it's always obvious when they appear. They're just as much about careful platforming as they are about speed, despite what the marketing made out (and obviously the speed is the more 'exciting' of the two so looks good in a magazine). They're not time attack games at all; they can be played that way (with incredible effect, especially Sonic 3 and S&K), but I mostly play them pretty carefully, collecting rings and getting all of the emeralds. And I get just as much enjoyment out of that. I love how Sonic controls and how responsive he is (or was, the physics have been horrible for years), I love chucking him around a level as much now as I did the first time I played it.

The new games have speed boost buttons and grinding and homing attacks, they're awash with bottomless pits, and constantly have you running into enemies and other obstacles. They're a mess, basically. But those originals? Wonderful. Obviously the more you play them the more you can showboat too, like any game. Wait until they're re-released on the PS4 and I'll Twitch them.

You did enough to click it, it seems.

Also, thanks Paul.

Yes much streaming shall be done come the day.

On systems that are not the Wii U.

That's a discussion topic I don't think we've done: is the system limited in any way to not be able to support streaming as an added feature in future?

2 I'll give you, but 1 was fucking aces. I mean, THIS WAS IT'S THEME SONG! How could it be bad? :omg:

I still listen to this regularly.

Hmm I never got on with the first SA much. I enjoyed the sonic & tails games, might have even played Knuckles but the other characters were naff. I enjoyed all characters on SA2, so it must have done something right as i rarely finish sonic games as it is.
