I wouldn't go that far, the 2D entries are okay. Sonic CD is best with S3&K just behind it.

I watched the latest AVGN let's play thing where they played Sonic '06. It's unbelievable that Sega would put something out like that. WTF were they thinking?

All Mario games are shit, although the old ones are kind of cool because you remember them from old commercials. Apart from Mario Advance, I don't think I ever played one for more than 10 minutes before they annoyed the shit out of me.

It is true that Sonic games are pretty much bits where you're barreling around at speed with no way of knowing what's ahead and only a bare minimum of influence over what's happening, and platforming bits that aren't a patch on Mario.

Exactly. Even when I had it for the game Gear, I tried to like it. Then realised it wasn't that fun.

Go really fast. Have no control. Hit spike that you didn't see. Lose rings.

Wash and repeat.

Zool was better (watch the negs go up).

It was sponsored by chuppa Chups.

I actually preffered Zool to Sonic but then I preferred Magic Pockets and RoboCod to Sonic. In fact, thinking about it, aside from the speed (which the aforementioned 2 did well) I probably preferred almost any platformer of any vague note from that same era more than Sonic. I remember playing Sonic (or 2) on a family friends machine one christmas and getting further than any of the families' kids by pretty much just holding right down. Although before Neg gets carried away, I know it's not the way to play but the fact that you can still annoys me.

Oh and the one on the Game Gear with the hangglider was FUCKING annoying.

You can't play the good 2D games by simply holding right, actually.

I stand by my statement and it's been explained why in so many threads that I can't be arsed right now to repeat myself (or copy and paste others).

SEGA certainly ruined modern Sonic for a while by thinking the games should focus on speed as well. By the time they learned (generations) not to make the series a quick time event fest (lost world), or to release the games before they're out of testing phase (06) or to stop focusing on anime-centric semi-serious plot lines (SA1 to Unleashed), we now have a Sonic game, Lost World, that has absolutely fuck all idea as to what it wants to be. Besides a Mario Galaxy clone, and even calling it that is insulting.

Edit: And on the modern 2D games side of things: They still continue to not learn a single thing from their mistakes. Homing attacks. Bottomless pits. Non-good ball physics. Press right to win in Advance 2 and Rush. It surprises me that this same studio (Dimps) made Street Fighter 4, whilst continuing to churn out one horrible 2D Sonic game after another.* Sonic 4 was/is the most insulting thing to the franchise, standing alongside Sonic 06.

I can accept people not liking it even back in the 90's, but don't blame it as a focus on speed that ruined it for you. It's the silliest comment to make.

*I get a guilty pleasure from playing Advance 2 and Rush, and Advance 3 wasn't too bad either. Advance 1 is amusingly the closest they got to classic Sonic era 2D gameplay.

Edit: Having said all of the above, Sonic Generations, the console version at least, was great. All should play it if they haven't already.

OK, not just holding right but not far off it. It's not like it had anything even as clever as the warp pipes in Mario, as a tiny example.

Loop the loops and those flat twist things which came along a bit later were good fun and I didn't mind some of the bits in some of the handheld versions like advance and think I finished all of Sonic Adventure (even the Big The Cat bits for some reason) but really. If I was to make a list of the 10 best platformers ever made across all platforms and generations that I've played and enjoyed, I really don't know if any of the Sonics would actually get in there. I suppose they are at the same time, almost uniquely their own brand of platformer but still.

Addams Family 2: Puggsley's big adventure on the SNES was probably better than the majority of Sonics.
