Thanks guys :)

All the info you need is on the website.

Except for clarification on whether a hard drive powered by a second USB would work, an explanation for why flash drives aren't an option or information about what the largest drive it supports is.

Thanks guys :)

Except for clarification on whether a hard drive powered by a second USB would work,

From the website: "Nintendo recommends using self-powered hard disk drives, i.e. devices that use an external power supply instead of drawing power through USB. On the other hand, some bus-powered hard disk drives draw more current than the USB 2.0 specification and might not run stably. So we cannot guarantee that such devices will run properly on the Wii U without the use of a supplemental power cable called a y-cable that draws power from two USB ports" pretty much answers that yes you can.

an explanation for why flash drives aren't an option

From the website: "Flash memory devices have a limited number of rewrites and are not suited to long-term storage of important game data, so we do not recommend the use of flash memory devices as an external storage device solution"

or information about what the largest drive it supports is.

From the website in the section linked as "Is there a maximum storage capacity for external storage devices": "The maximum amount of storage supported by Wii U is 2 TB (terabytes). Wii U will be able to recognise a storage device that is over 2 TB, but 2 TB will still be the maximum amount of storage capacity. Any extra capacity in the storage device beyond the 2 TB will not be accessible via Wii U."

Took me all of 10 seconds to look for those.

I have Nintendo Land and some extra controllers on order, I'm having a pre-Christmas friends bash and I reckon the game is going to be the multiplayer game of the day. Can't wait.

The online is rather baffling, and I can't find a proper 'run' button for Mario 3D, but it's all rather lovely. I've realised just how much I've missed Nintendo this last generation, and can't wait to get stuck into it properly. It's pretty much going to be a Nintendo disc machine (and that's no problem) but I think I'll get ZombiU , W101 and Bayonetta preordered as well. I was talking to somebody at work about how I miss local multiplayer gaming, it looks like WiiU will be great for that. Might even buy Sonic Transformed again.

What a rambling post I just did. I'll never find time to play all the games I have (especially with a year left of Uni) but so what - videogames!

Press and hold Y to run in mario

heh, I found it but thought it was a dash move rather than a run. Anyway, Mario 3D didn't really grab me earlier and I wasn't keen on using the gamepad with the TV, but I'm watching a shit film on Netflix and started thinking about it. I picked up the pad, switched on the WiiU and now I'm playing Mario on the pad while half-watching the film. Mario is just beautiful, and I've had about fifty Nintendo 'moments' already and loving it. The console and pad don't feel like the best quality (and it's a world away from the PS4's build) but it feels just right and it feels like Nintendo.

I was having doubts earlier, but I'm really glad I bought it now after tinkering around a little - and the playing while I watch TV feels good in a way that I don't get with Vita on remote play. It's going to be the perfect partner for my PS4 and Vita this new generation. I guess I've missed Nintendo (even though I was only away for the Wii!) these last few years. Can't wait to play the two Galaxy games as well.

And I've just realised I've been using this NGamer Super Mario mouse mat for years and I'd stopped noticing it until today  It's bitter sweet though, because it made me want to resubscribe to NGamer, but it's gone :(

Just picked up a Wii U with The wonderful 101, NSMBU NSLU and Nintendoland. The Wii U is rather good isnt it.

Add me im bulldogauto.

More! we shall have more to add to the hive !

Anyway this quote struck me for neogaf. If true it explains why a lot of ports are seeing worse framerates on the Wiiu.

"Keep in mind also that these Xbox 360 ports are not using the Wii U DSP for sound but wasting a CPU core for it, not using much or any edram of the Wii U but delegating things like texture fetching to the main system memory ala Xbox 360 (Xbox 360 coders have to do this since the system only has 10MB of edram). This makes these ports run inferior despite having usually better picture quality and no screen tearing due to the more modern/powerful GPU in the Wii U. It makes sense when you think about it.....better graphics......but worse performance?"

Now this makes sense in some ways. The x360 uses a CPU core for sound. It has no dedicated sound chip. The WiiU does however but if developers are lazy in porting (or rather have a small team and are pushed for time) then it's very likely they just shove the 360 code onto a wiiU and end up wasting a core on sound. I already had a feeling that devs weren't using the 32 megs of EDRAM on the WiiU as that would take some rewriting of code and engines to make use of it. Enabling Vsync is very likely done with a simple option on a WiiU dev kit. It also explains why Need for speed looked better on the WiiU, criterion said they had to rewrite sections of code to make proper use of the CPU "it's not weak, just different" they said.

Perhaps once some get the hang of programming for it the games will be even beter, however I hink th ethird party ship has all but sailed, yet again, due to this. Also Ninty are notorious for not spending money to make money. They just put something out there and expect it to attract interest.
